Can you help to save a life?

I know I’m sending this to people who don’t generally hear from me. But I know we do have something in common---compassion. It is my hope that your compassion will move you to action.

I received an earlier email expressing these Guilford dogs were scheduled to be euthanized this past Wednesday. They belong to a homeless individual who has been given an ultimatum. Town policy has allowed their sheltering for 2 months. Yesterday they extended this deadline to August 17.

I understand they were never posted on the internet---nor on petfinder. I don’t know if Guilford provides any internet access for their ACO. This is disturbing for a facility that is only 3 years old. I could not find them on petfinder or pets911.

(However primitive we may feel our facilities are) most ACO’s do network to help animals in their custody. Most have a presence online. It is distressing while still surprising that today this affluent community apparently doesn’t encourage similar efforts.

Among you who I’ve contacted is there anyone who:
  • Can anyone respectfully talk to Guilford town officials---
       The Town Clerk’s # is (203-453-8001)
       & their police department # is (203-453-8061)
---into providing connection to the internet for their ACO’s?

  • Can anyone pass on a workable listing of rescue groups to the ACO’s there?

  • Is anyone willing---dare I ask---to adopt one of these dogs? The Guilford ACO’s are Debra Volpe & Kelly Pinette (203-453-8083). Hours of operation are Mon.-Wed. 6a.m.-9:30p.m. & Thurs.-Sun. 6a.m.-2p.m. Their facility is located on 400 Church Street (behind the police dept. to the right of the fire dept.).

  • Can you please take a moment to crosspost this request to all of the animal lovers you know?

Please folks! You may simply save a life.

Scott rescued 6 black lab (mix) puppies out of the middle of the road on Saturday. PLEASE help me find them homes - otherwise, it's Animal Control - which means they only have 5 days. We've bathed them, sprayed them for fleas and wormed them....but we can't keep them. They are currently in a kennel in my basement since I don't have a fence. I've lost count of the number of rescue groups that I've contacted, only to be turned down due to no room. Please check with every dog person you know to see if they need a puppy.

Please pass this on for these sweet young kittens - otherwise they will be
suffocated in the Spalding gas chamber tomorrow - these trusting ones will die trying to breathe. We can help by networking - if we all pass this along, we can probably reach someone who can help but it takes a lot of people doing  lot of networking to get a few positive results. Thanks very much for your efforts.

Please send all questions to the shelter for best results/answers.

Hello all,

I have a very desperate situation in Clay City,Ky. My neighbor passed away this spring and left her 86 year old brother to try to care for her animals. They were living in a trailer that they were buying from a friend. Once Reola passed, the friend did not make the payments on the trailer and the bank has now reposessed the trailer. The brother, Ottis, was making the payments to the friend, but the friend was not making the payments to the bank. So, in a nut shell Ottis and the animals are on their own. There are at least 7 cats and kittens living under that trailer. This week sometime they are going to come and pull that thing out of there and if the cats are in the way, o well. They dont care, they just want to get it out cats or not. I have been trying to trap them but I have only been able to get 2 of them so far. I just found out about this yesterday (Sunday) so I am trying to arrange help as fast as I can. My problem is that I cant take in these cats, I have more than I can handle now. I am broke. I am looking for a rescue that can take them other wise I am going to be forced to move them into one of the shelters in the area. I cant take them to my local shelter because its the epitome of high kill and abusive treatment of those animals. Can anyone please please help me to save these cats?  I am so desperate, I have been trying to solve this problem for the longest time and now I dont have any more time or money. I have been able to spay/neuter and place 18 of their cats but I am out of money and just cant do any more. Please consider helping these babies have something other than abandonment and a struggle to survive ahead of them. I just cant do any more than try to trap them and put them in another rescue or shelter. And I dont have a lot of time to get it done. Can anyone help them?

Thank You,

Mary King

Area SPCA, overcrowded and under funded
9/4/07
By Bridget Blythe
There are nearly two hundred cats at the Wyoming County SPCA. Space is tight there, but so is money. "We have one more month of funding left.", said Manager, Susan Davila.

While money matters, finding homes for every cat is still top priority for the place that calls itself a 'no kill' shelter. "We're waving the donation fees to try to place them and move them out of here."

Every cat that ends up at the Wyoming County SPCA has a story. Late last week a box that used to hold cheese was found in a parking lot, baking in the hot sun. Inside - - two kittens. One was missing an eye, the other with an eye bulging right out of her head. Susan said, "Every day we get this. Every day. It just doesn't stop."

Another cat, 8 years old, was just dropped off at the facility, in a cage, with a note. Part of that note read, "I was owned by a lady who had to go into a nursing home. I haven't been happy since then."

The Wyoming County SPCA is not funded by the County. They rely on donations and fundraisers. Davila is not confident they'll be able to stay open. Worst case scenario she said, "I'm gonna stay here. I'm going to continue doing what I'm doing, I'm just going to have to put a big sign out 'do not leave any animals, we are closed'."

But a campaign for donations may turn things around. "What we're asking is that 30 thousand people donate one dollar a month. If we get that, it'll keep us open."

I'm writing to all of you in hopes that you can either help me or pass along this info. I'm a vet tech. in a Columbus practice and a few nights ago, a new client came in to euthanize his 17 year old cat, Tiger. He was very vague as to why he wanted to euthanize him, but it basically boiled down to he's getting older and I'm not home much. Well, of course I was not going to let him euthanize him and had him release possession of him to our practice.

 Tiger!

Tiger looks very good physically and basic bloodwork was normal except for showing a little bit of dehydration. Tiger's teeth look great for his supposed age and he's neutered & front declawed. His dad said he lived as an indoor cat and was the only cat in the house. He is a very shy cat that was hiding in the back of the cage trying to make himself as small as possible. He didn't even eat or use the litterbox his first night in a cage. I moved him to a more quiet area the next day where he started scarfing down canned cat food and seemed less scared. He loves to have his head rubbed when you visit with him.

I am currently trying to find a quiet home to place him in on my own, but if this doesn't work, I'm afraid people above me at work will say that he needs to be euthanized. I realize that it is no life in a cage, especially at 17 years old after a life in a home, but I'm doing my best. If you can help Tiger, please contact me. I am willing to drive him anywhere in Ohio or surrounding states for the right rescue/home. His owner couldn't give us any vaccine history on him, so once a place is established for him to go, he will be updated on the necessary vaccines. Thanks for your time!

Atlanta NAACP: After sentence, let quarterback Michael Vick return to NFL, preferably Falcons
By ERRIN HAINES, Associated Press Writer
August 22, 2007

ATLANTA (AP) -- An NAACP leader said Michael Vick should be allowed to return to the NFL, preferably the Atlanta Falcons, after serving his sentence for his role in a dogfighting operation.

"As a society, we should aid in his rehabilitation and welcome a new Michael Vick back into the community without a permanent loss of his career in football," said R.L. White, president of the NAACP's Atlanta chapter. "We further ask the NFL, Falcons, and the sponsors not to permanently ban Mr. Vick from his ability to bring hours of enjoyment to fans all over this country."

White said the Falcons quarterback made a mistake and should be allowed to prove he has learned from that mistake.

On Monday, Vick said through a lawyer that he will plead guilty to a federal charge of conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and conspiracy to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture.

Three Vick associates have pleaded guilty to the conspiracy charge and say Vick provided nearly all the gambling and operating funds for the "Bad Newz Kennels" dogfighting enterprise. Two of them also said Vick participated in executing at least eight underperforming dogs, raising the possibility of the animal cruelty charges.

Last month, state and local leaders of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People urged the public not to rush to judgment in the Vick case. The civil rights organization said animal rights groups, talk radio and the news media were vilifying the embattled athlete, and that his team and corporate sponsors were prematurely punishing Vick.

White said the Atlanta chapter supports Vick's decision to accept a plea bargain if it's in his best interest, but he questioned the credibility of Vick's co-defendants, saying an admission of guilt might be more about cutting losses than the truth.

"At this point, you're not looking at guilt or innocence," White said, referring to the possible harsher sentence Vick could have received had he taken his case to trial and been found guilty. "You're thinking, 'What I better do is cut my losses and take a plea.' But if he saw this as the best thing to do at this point for his future, then I think he made the correct choice."

White said he regretted that the plea deal will mean all the facts of the case might never be known.

"Some have said things to save their own necks," White said. "Michael Vick has received more negative press than if he had killed a human being."

White said he does not support dogfighting and that he considers it as bad as hunting.

"His crime is, it was a dog," White said.

Nike Drops Vick, Condemns Animal Cruelty
July 27, 2007

The HSUS
Nike, Reebok both condemned animal fighting.

Today, Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States, expressed appreciation and gratitude to Nike for suspending its commercial relationship with Michael Vick.

"The allegations against Michael Vick are so serious and disturbing that The Humane Society of the United called on his corporate backers to end their commercial relationships with the star player ," said Pacelle. "We are very pleased that Nike has today signaled it has a zero tolerance policy for athletes who may be involved with staged animal fights and other forms of malicious animal cruelty by indefinitely suspending its relationship with Vick."

Nike's statement reads as follows:

Demand Action!

Both Nike and Reebok have stopped their sales of Vick-related items, while the NFL has only kept him from training camp. Insist that the NFL suspend Vick from all games until his case has been decided.

"Nike has suspended Michael Vick's contract without pay, and will not sell any more Michael Vick product at Nike owned retail at this time. As we've said before, Nike is concerned by the serious and highly disturbing allegations made against Michael Vick and we consider any cruelty to animals inhumane and abhorrent. However, we do believe that Michael Vick should be afforded the same due process as any citizen in the United States, therefore, we have not terminated our relationship"

The HSUS last week renewed its request of Nike that it terminate its commercial relationship with Michael Vick after the federal government presented a 19-page indictment in federal court. In the past week, more than 165,000 HSUS supporters sent messages to Nike through humanesociety.org.

Also today, Reebok agreed to stop selling Michael Vick-branded products. The company does not have a contract with Vick, but has an official relationship with the NFL to sell its merchandise.
