President-elect Barack Obama’s plan to connect more Americans to an open and affordable Internet is under siege by phone and cable lobbyists who seek to turn our economic stimulus into a blank check written with no strings attached.
Tell Congress: Don’t bail out phone and cable companies. Build out a better Internet for everyone. (Fill out your information below to send this letter to Congress.)

Dear [Member of Congress],

I support President-elect Barack Obama's commitment to improve information infrastructure as a component of our economic stimulus plan. Too often, government has tried to expand Internet access by giving public money to massive phone and cable companies, only to see promises broken, tax dollars squandered, and benefits lost. As a result, Americans now face few market choices, and pay high prices for speeds that are far too slow. Congress must not write another blank check to these same corporations. Please make sure my tax dollars are used only to support broadband build out that is: 1. Universal: focused on connecting the nearly half of the country stuck on the wrong side of the digital divide. 2. Open: committed to free speech and without corporate gatekeepers, filters or discrimination. 3. Affordable: providing faster speeds at lower prices. 4. Innovative: dedicated to new projects only and available to new competitors, including municipalities and nonprofits. 5. Accountable: open to public scrutiny so we can ensure that our money isn't being spent to prop up stock prices and support market monopolies. The Internet's great power is the people who use it every day. I strongly support connecting more Americans to the Internet, but Congress must guarantee that our tax dollars go toward information infrastructure that serves the public good.
Sincerely, June Marshall 39 Serenity Way Manchester, NH 03104-5762 United States
If everyone can remember something this simple, we could save some folks.. Seriously..
Please read:
STROKE IDENTIFICATION:
During a BBQ, a friend stumbled and took a little fall - she assured everyone that she was fine (they offered to call paramedics). She said she had just tripped over a brick because of her new shoes.
They got her cleaned up and got her a new plate of food. While she appeared a bit shaken up, Ingrid went about enjoying herself the rest of the evening
Ingrid's husband called later telling everyone that his wife had been taken to the hospital - (at 6:00 pm Ingrid passed away.) She had suffered a stroke at the BBQ. Had they known how to identify the signs of a stroke, perhaps Ingrid would be with us today. Some don't die. they end up in a helpless, hopeless condition instead.
It only takes a minute to read this...
A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3 hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke..totally. He said the trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed, and then getting the patient medically cared for within 3 hours, which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the '3' steps, STR. Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify. Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may suffer severe brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple questions:
S *Ask the individual to SMILE. T *Ask the person to TALK and SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. It is sunny out today) R *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
If he or she has trouble with ANY ONE of these tasks, call emergency numberimmediatelyand describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
New Sign of a Stroke -------- Stick out Your Tongue
NOTE: Another 'sign' of a stroke is this: Ask the person to 'stick' out his tongue.
If the tongue is 'crooked', if it goes to one side or the other, that is also an indication of a stroke.
A cardiologist says if everyone who gets this e-mail sends it to 10 people; you can bet that at least one life will be saved.
And he made a promise to Planned Parenthood last year they expect him to keep.
The first thing I’d do as President is sign the Freedom of Choice Act. That’s the first thing I’d do.
SEE THE VIDEO IN THE RIGHT SIDEBAR —->
The Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA) would eliminate every restriction on abortion nationwide.
FOCA will do away with state laws on parental involvement, on partial birth abortion, and on all other protections.
FOCA will compel taxpayer funding of abortions.
FOCA will force faith-based hospitals and healthcare facilities to perform abortions.
Barack Obama believes this legislation will "end the abortion wars." To him, "ending the abortion wars" means eradicating every state and federal law on abortion — laws that the majority of Americans support.
The time to Fight FOCA is now. With Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid in charge of Congress, we can expect a fight over FOCA to begin as soon as the next Congress begins.
Please add your name to the Fight FOCA petitionand let your friends know about President-Elect Barack Obama’s promise to expand abortion throughout the country.
Fight FOCA Petition
I oppose the Freedom of Choice Act (FOCA), because:
FOCA is a radical attempt to enshrine abortion-on-demand into American law;
FOCA seeks to sweep aside existing, protective laws that I and the majority of Americans support;
FOCA will prevent states from enacting protective measures in the future.
The FightFOCA petition will be sent to key Members of Congress upon the re-introduction of the Freedom of Choice Act in the 111th Congress, and to President-Elect Obama.

Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace have been calling for the ouster of EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson for months -- and that campaign is picking up major steam.
This week, four U.S. Senators joined our call. In addition to asking Administrator Johnson to resign, they called on the Department of Justice to examine potentially perjurious testimony given by Administrator Johnson to a Senate committee. This is exactly the kind of attention we need to encourage.
Stephen Johnson is simply a bagman for the Bush White House. Our nation can ill afford his continued tenure at the EPA as this administration attempts to reverse any number of rules and regulations on its way out.
Administrator Johnson has capitulated to White House pressure by ignoring career scientists, burying findings, cracking down on whistleblowers, blocking global warming regulations and more -- all within just the last year! Creating public pressure on this man is critical to preventing last-minute regulatory changes during Bush's exit from office.
I have no doubt that at this moment the Department of Interior is being flooded with comments on guns in parks. They are coming in via online and good old-fashioned postal mail. The question is, who is flooding their inbox? Is it those of us who know that the current regulations are effective and protect the rights of visitors, wildlife and gun owners alike...or those who think that national parks are an appropriate place to carry a loaded gun?
Why fix what isn't broken? The current regulations, dating back to the Reagan Administration, allow for the transport of guns through national parks, so long as the guns are unloaded and safely stored. Gun owners and park lovers alike can agree--this law makes sense.
For the NRA, this is about one thing--and it isn't visitor safety and protecting wildlife. But for the National Park Service it is. For NPCA it is. And for you, it is. We're in this together.
You did it. Just a few minutes ago, the House of Representatives passed the new GI Bill by a vote of 256-166, as an attachment to the emergency supplemental. Click here to view the full list of who voted for it and who voted against it. Earlier this week, we told you that the new GI Bill was facing opposition from a small group of Representatives in the House, who were threatening the bill despite its deep bi-partisan support.
We asked for your help, and you stepped up to the plate. Thousands of you took action by calling your Representatives, signing the petition at www.GIBill2008.org, and spreading the word to your friends and neighbors. Today, your dedication paid off and together, we made history.
There's no question that your efforts had an impact. Referring specifically to the group of Representatives that were standing in the way of the bill, known as the Blue Dogs, the Politico, a Washington-insider newspaper, said that "there had been erosion among Blue Dogs in the face of pressure from veterans groups."1The leadership you demonstrated in fighting for this bill shows that IAVA is a force to be reckoned with.
The new GI Bill has widespread support among Democrats, Republicans, and all of the major veterans organizations. But the legislative process is a long one, and it's your dedication that keeps it going during these crucial stages.
Next week, the Senate will have to vote on the bill as well. After that, it will go to the President's desk for his signature.
We'll keep you updated via email, but for the latest news, just visit www.GIBill2008.org.
Thank you again for standing with us. The support we're getting in this fight has been truly inspiring.
Sincerely,
Patrick Campbell Iraq Veteran Legislative Director Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America
History was made today when the U.S. Department of Interior formally listed the polar bear as a "threatened" species.
The decision came in response to the Center for Biological Diversity's 2005 scientific petition and two subsequent lawsuits filed by the Center and its allies.
It also came in response to your pleas to save the polar bear. More than 100,000 of the Center's supporters signed petitions urging the Bush administration to protect the polar bear.
Thank you. This outpouring of political pressure was invaluable.
Bush Still Hiding from Global Warming
Today's decision was bizarrely schizophrenic in that the administration simultaneously enacted policies to prevent the polar bear's listing from affecting runaway greenhouse gas emissions.
- The administration should have listed the polar bear as "endangered" rather than "threatened." An endangered listing would require a stronger protective standard.
- The administration refused to designate and protect the polar bear's habitat as "critical habitat." The overwhelming threat to polar bears is the melting of Arctic sea ice. It is absolutely essential that this habitat is itself protected if we expect to save the bear.
- The listing decision includes a "special rule" and a declaration that greenhouse gas emissions can't and shouldn't be limited by the Endangered Species Act. This poison pill attempts to completely undermine the entire point of the polar bear's listing: to reign in the primary actions driving the species extinct.
Back to Court
The Center for Biological Diversity will not let these atrocious policies stand. We've repeatedly beat the administration in court over the past three years and we'll do so again.
We and our allies at the Natural Resources Defense Council and Greenpeace will soon haul the Bush administration back to court to ensure that the polar bear and its habitat are fully protected.
I'll keep you updated in the coming weeks about our progress.
Thanks again for your help, and don't let the administration's futile efforts to undermine the Endangered Species Act get you down. This is a watershed moment in the global battle to combat global warming. Give yourself a pat on the back for helping to make it happen.
So many letter writers have based their arguments on how this land is made up of immigrants. Ernie Lujan for one, suggests "we
should tear down the Statute of Liberty because the people now
in question aren't being treated the same as those who passed
through Ellis Island and other ports of entry."
Maybe we should turn to our history books and point out to people like Mr. Lujan why today's American is not willing to
accept this new kind of immigrant any longer.
Back in 1900 when there was a rush from all areas of Europe to come to the United States, people had to get off a ship and stand
in a long line in New York and be documented. Some would even get down on their hands and knees and kiss the ground. They made
a pledge to uphold the laws and support their new country in good
and bad times. They made learning English a primary rule in their
new American households and some even changed their names
to blend in with their new home.
They had waved good bye to their birth place to give their childrena new life and did everything in their power to help
their children assimilate into one culture. Nothing was handed
to them. No free lunches, no welfare, no labor laws to protect them. All they had were the skills and craftsmanship they had brought with them to trade for a future of prosperity.
Most of their children came of age when World War II broke out.
My father fought along side men whose parents had come straight
over from Germany, Italy, France and Japan. None of these 1st
generation Americans ever gave any thought about what country
their parents had come from.
They were Americans fighting Hitler, Mussolini and the Emperor of Japan. They were defending the United States of America as
one people.
When we liberated France, no one in those villages were looking for the French-American or the German American or the Irish
American. The people of France saw only Americans.
And we carried one flag that represented one country. Not one of those immigrant sons would have thought about picking
up another country's flag and waving it to represent who they
were. It would have been a disgrace to their parents who had sacrificed so much to be here. These immigrants truly knew what it meant to be an American. They stirred the melting pot into
one red, white and blue bowl.
And here we are in 2006 with a new kind of immigrant who wants the same rights and privileges. Only they want to achieve it by
playing with a different set of rules, one that includes the entitlement
card and a guarantee of being faithful to their mother country. I'm
sorry, that's not what being an American is all about.
I believe that the immigrants who landed on Ellis Island in the early 1900's deserve better than that for all the toil, hard work
and sacrifice in raising future generations to create a land that
has become a beacon for those legally searching for a better life.
I think they would be appalled that they are being used as an example by those waving foreign country flags.
And for that suggestion about taking down the Statute of Liberty, it happens to mean a lot to the citizens who are voting
on the immigration bill. I wouldn't start talking about dismantling
the United States just yet.
