In Spain alone, approximately 40,000 bulls meet a terrible fate in bullfights every year. Today, please help us stop this cruel sport.

Even before a bull is killed in the bullring, he is tortured. Petroleum jelly is smeared in his eyes to blur his vision, and he is violently beaten around the head with sandbags to disorientate him, among other cruel acts. Once in the ring, the bull suffers unbearably as lances and barbed spears are thrust deep into the flesh of his back and neck. Blood pours from his wounds, and he is so weak and confused that he can barely stand. Only when his torturers are sated by his suffering is the bull finally allowed to die: a blade is plunged between his shoulder blades, severing his spine.

Please help us let the Spanish government know that cruelty to animals is not an acceptable form of entertainment. E-mail the Prime Minister of Spain, His Excellency José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and demand that he act immediately to prohibit bullfighting.

An independent Gallup survey conducted in October 2006 found that 72 per cent of Spaniards had no interest in bullfighting, which is up from 54 per cent in the 1980s. Attendance at bullfighting events is also in decline.
