The new movie, Inconvenient Truth, is opening next Friday near our main office in Palo Alto. We just bought a big block of tickets and are taking all of our employees to go see it.   We've done things like this a few times before (to see Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price and Fahrenheit 911). I'd highly recommend this to other employers. It's a great bonding experience (and Inconvenient Truth is about such a non-partisan issue- global warming, you don't have to worry about the politics).

If you're not an employer, why not suggest this to your boss? You never know till you ask....  And if your company or department won't take you, it's still a great event for you and your colleagues. Some movies are great for dates, some are great for groups. The discussions you can have are important because they help everyone to better understand the issues and internalize the desire to make a difference.

Anyway, I'm psyched we're going and thought I'd pass along the idea.

Just finished watching the documentary "Born into Brothels". It follows the lives of children living in Calcutta's red-light district, where their mothers work as prostitutes.   A photographer, Zana Briski, gives the children cameras to record their world.

It's a deeply moving story - tragic in many ways, yet inspiring as well.  Gives a terribly raw look at what life is like for these children. Born into extreme poverty with horrible things happening all around them... perhaps even more sad because they have a sense for where their lives will likely lead them and at the same time have an awareness of the possibilities.  And yet, through the care and work of the photographer, gain greater awareness and most importantly a sense of possibility and self worth.

This is a movie that all adults should see to better understand the conditions of those less fortunate and have gratitude for what we have.  Yet, it's a movie I suspect most will not want to see because it's uncomfortable, saddening, and not easy to watch.   Yet with that discomfort comes growth, empathy, and the opportunity to make a difference in for others less fortunate.
