OnePeaceLoveSea is passionate about our oceans, ocean environments and marine species, particularly endangered marine species. Populations of many species are decreasing at an unsustainable rate, and the number of species listed as endangered from marine life families such as whales, dolphins and seaturtles just to name a few, are on the rise. The threats to marine species are difficult to perceive because marine animals are not as visible as animals on land. But unfortunately, marine creatures are equally, if not more, vulnerable to problems such as habitat destruction and overexploitation. Shallow water animals that breathe air, like sea turtles and whales are often hit by boats and caught in fishing gear. Species such as sea turtles that lay their eggs on land often lose their nurseries due to coastal development and poachers. Animals that have taken millions of years to evolve, that are invaluable to all ecosystems have and continue to vanish from places where they once flourished.
Our mission is to help some of our most threatened and endangered species, therefore helping to sustain entire ecosystems by bringing awareness to the threats to our marine species specifically sea turtles, dolphins and whales. The threats are very immense to our oceans and ecosystems. There are many threats worldwide to our sea turtles, including poaching, artificial lighting, increased human presence, beach amouring, predators and commercial fishing just to name a few. One of the main threats to our dolphins and other species of small whales is their slaughter that numbers in the hundreds and even thousands each year. Each year, approximately 20,000 of these dolphins and whales are killed in Japan alone. This has recently received more attention due to the award winning documentary "The Cove." One of the greatest threats to our whales is whaling (the hunting of whales). In 1986, The IWC (International Whaling Commission) banned commercial whaling so that our numbers of whales that were being depleted might recover. Commerical whaling does, however, still occur. Countries that still hunt whales include Canada, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Iceland, Indonesia, Japan, Norway, Russia and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Whaling even occurs in the United States where it is carried out by nine different indigenious Alaskan communites. Japan whaling is often in the press and has been exposed thanks in part to shows as "Whale Wars" that airs on animal planet and by Greenpeace activists who were arrested for taking a box of whale meat in order to expose that Japan was, in fact, whaling for whale meat and not for "scientific research" as they claim. Other threats to dolphins and whales are marine pollution, toxins that enter the marine environment through ocean dumping and oil spills to name a few. You can help offset these threats by the personal choices you make, by contacting your local senator or representative and letting them know how important these issues are to you, by organizing or becoming active in one of our beach clean up efforts and by becoming more informed about the issues affecting our marine life and our ocean environment.
