This week was "Red Ribbon Week" where I take the time to remind kids grades k-5, to say NO to drugs. Even though there aren't any drugs being pushed around this particular elementary school, there are still the daily dangers of over the counter drugs that can be used incorrectly. Alot of the kids didn't even consider the use of asthma inhalers as a form of drug!

On the news this week it showed all of the fires here in Southern California, and most of us were really feeling the affects of the smoke and ashes flying around in the air. I used it as a teaching tool and explained to the kids this is what it would feel like to smoke cigarettes. Most of them had headaches, dry throats, and stuffy noses with a heavy feeling in their chest. I had them do the "Pledge" NOT to smoke, when they are older,(since it is standard to the Say No To Drugs campaign during RRW)  I think it was a message well recieved.

As far as dance goes...I used the windy weather as the intro for pantomiming parts of the Wizard of Oz..The wind was so strong (50-70 mph in some places) that we could hear it blowing through the doors, so I had them move around to the sound of the wind as if they were leaves blowing around and gently landing on the ground. Kids have amazing abilities to portray these types of things! I was very impressed at how much focus they gave to detail in their movements!

I used the movement of the wind pushing around the leaves as an example of how I wanted the kids to move around the room in dance class.A little science added in always helps! I used the sound of the wind coming in through one open door as our "music". The kids got alot of exercise and went back to their academic classrooms relaxed and refreshed. A good time was had by all!

Till next time..."A journey begins with a single step"...enjoy your journey!
