Donate NowBecome a MemberShop Our Partners December 12, 2013 Bill to Eliminate Cruel Traps Introduced! Dear Friends, Body-gripping traps are outdated and inhumane devices used to hunt furbearers. But equally outdated is the fact that they can still be set in many national wildlife refuges. Thankfully, Congresswoman Nita Lowey (D-NY) has reintroduced the Refuge From Cruel Trapping Act (H.R. 3513) and we need your help to get Congress to act quickly on this legislation â for the sake of wildlife and nature-lovers alike. H.R. 3513 would ban all body-gripping traps â such as snare, Conibear, and steel-jaw leghold â from being used or possessed on national wildlife refuges (NWRs). The brutality of these traps is shocking; they can crush limbs and organs, and animals often remain trapped for days, in massive pain, before dying. Trapped animals can suffer severe physical injury, psychological trauma, thirst, hypothermia, and predation. Some animals chew off their own limbs to escape, only to die days later. The suffering caused by trapping is not limited to target animals; domestic pets, endangered species, and humans often become caught in traps, resulting in painful injury or death. NWRs were established to provide a safe haven in which wild species could thrive and people could enjoy the serenity of nature. Animals and people should have the freedom to enjoy these refuges without the threat of stepping into a body-gripping trap. Please urge your Representative to support this crucial bill. We have a historic opportunity to make a real difference for magnificent wildlife across the country! For the animals,
COURT UPDATE: Today went awesome. Well the court was just an arraignment where Gabriel Lee got his court appointed attorney so that was just a quick in and out thing. Here is the news of the day...
THE PROSECUTOR HAS A RESCUE DOG !! There will be NO plea deals offered. He has 2 options
1) plead guilty as charged 2) go to trial
The prosecutor is taking the case to heart. She was waving to us when we came into court today. Everything she said I liked. When the court appointed lawyer came up to meet the defendant she opened her file and handed him the picture of Braveheart in the storage building. Can I get a "you go girl" for Amanda Sullivan (I think I spelled the last name right)
I was nervous about today. This lady is OUR kind of people. She will get us whatever justice is possible. Today was a good day. Brave will sleep good tonight

Hi; We had 2 Shih Tzu's come in on 12/6, that are in need of rescue, and they are in rough shape.
Here are some details that we have so far:
Male - 10 years old. His jaw is either deformed, or has been broken in the past. His mouth doesn't close all the way, and is tilted a bit. His tongue sticks out permanently.
Female - 8 years old, she is missing some teeth, a front tooth, and a side tooth, and she has some type of flea allergy going on also.
Both of these babies are very sweet, and love each other. They are a little scared, but once you show them love they become your best friends. They are both pitiful; I hate to think of what they have been through.
We will have to legally hold them here for a stray hold until 12/12. After that I would love to have a rescue lined up to help these poor things.
If you can help them please, please email me and let me know.
Thank you so much for your time!

Sent: Wednesday, December 11, 2013 3:22 PM To: Subject: Anna, a 5 year old Siamese
Anna, a 5-year-old Siamese I rescued on a frigid day in February from a field next to a warehouse in Long Island City, Queens, is still looking for a home. Attached is a flyer that I'm asking to be posted and/or forwarded.
Anna has been fostered by me since I captured her in 2011 and in all that time she hasn't allowed anyone to pet or hold her. She will sit several feet away and carry on an extended conversation, but as soon as I or anyone moves in her direction, she disappears. She will not sleep on the bed if anyone is on it. She's also put on weight living the more sedentary life indoors. To date she hasn't been adopted due to the fact that when anyone comes to view her, she disappears.
Anna needs to return to a much larger, freer environment; i.e., a house or even a well-maintained, heated barn. I imagine she is an incredible mouser and would be happiest if she could return to that lifestyle but under a person's protection.
Health-wise, Anna was spayed at the time I found her shivering outside the warehouse in the 10 degree blizzard. Her ear already was cropped and Dr. Patrick Cotter confirmed that when he found the suture line. Anna is FeLV/FIV negative, up-to-date as of today, December 11, 2013, against FVRCP and rabies and is micro-chipped. Her coat is beautiful. Anna does not bite or hiss when captured. She simply runs from people and it's a chore to re-capture her. She also gets along very well with other cats and has interacted very favorably with several while in foster care.
Please help me to spread the word. It would be my pleasure to travel up to 100 miles to deliver Anna to an appropriate new home.
