Sometimes a seemingly diverse and unrelated set of symptoms has at its heart only one fundamental cause. Very often many of the symptoms go unrecognized, and are even considered "normal." So consider this…
In my lifetime I have seen children grow up pretending to shoot each other during their games, and they called it "fun." I have lived in neighborhoods that were filled with regular nightly yelling matches echoing down the streets. I have witnessed the rise of gang violence to such extremes that in many neighborhoods the children believe they will not live to adulthood. Sadly their reactions to sudden noises rivals the fastest reactions of trained soldiers. I have witnessed psychological tests where awareness was judged by whether we got our daily dose of negativity by watching, listening, or reading the daily news. I have borne
witness to the rise of video games whose level of violence is worse than the worst of our most violent movies. I have seen that in our most civilized countries, the chance of a woman being raped in her lifetime is in the double digit percentages. I have lived under the terrible threat of Mutual Assured Destruction, the idea that if you attack me with a nuclear weapon, I will strike you back with thousands.
We have "correctional institutions" where we readily acknowledge that a young offender who goes in, will be guaranteed to come out a hardened criminal. It's not okay to force prisoners to go to work every day to earn a living—like they'll have to do when they get out—because they are already "paying for their crimes." And heaven forbid prisoners should be forced to go
through genuine rehabilitation, earning their meals according to the grades they earn so they get the idea of how to become productive members of society. Of course, violence in prisons, from rape to assault to murder is accepted as something that's a shame, but they're criminals so maybe they deserve it. Shouldn't there be college programs in prisons?
Rich countries stand idly by, if not taking full advantage of poor countries, unless some re-election campaign is about to occur.
I have seen societies throw away their elders the same way corporations blindly focus on quarterly profit figures. Indeed, they make their quarterly numbers by eliminating liabilities, but in doing so they've thown away a vast reservoir of collective experience and wisdom, so our society is heading the same direction as the giant corporations that suddenly go bankrupt. Pursuit of a single objective in isolation is destructive.
I have witnessed blind adherence to rituals, philosophies, and traditions, wherein people somehow find it justifiable to violate and kill others. Can someone please explain to me the concept of a "holy war," because it sure sounds like an oxymoron?
And somehow, it's perfectly okay to blindly overpopulate the earth while producing byproducts that destroy thousands of species. While everyone agrees this is a shame, we look away when it comes time to take responsibility for our own violence against nature.
And during all of this life of mine, I've heard stories of how my own grandparents became war refugees, lost almost everything, and how they suffered terribly for many years to restore some level of normalcy to their lives.
Ladies and gentlemen…we have a problem. But with so many things that need fixing, where does one begin? I would propose to you that all the symptoms I've just described are related to one root cause.
While our brains are so remarkably complex that their functioning is beyond comprehension, one obvious pattern emerges as an almost undeniable fact. Whatever we put into our brains, will come out sooner or later as similar behavior. Put in an education of violence, and almost surely we will see violent behavior.
But exactly what is an education of peace?
Our present education system is meant to convert children into productive members of society. This addresses the base problem of survival. However, survival as a species is much different that survival as individuals. As a species we've survived for thousands of years, through
hundreds of wars, but at enormous personal loss and death for hundreds of millions of people. For us to have hope, to see beauty, and be inspired towards great positive accomplishments, we need harmony.
Peace education is a type of education that teaches us how to create personal peace. The emphasis is on the word 'create'. It is not enough to go to a serene place in nature and take on the feeling of peacefulness. We must learn how to create that feeling in every daily circumstance, no matter how stressful, frustrating, or scary.
The first step is to know that this sort of thing is possible. The second step is to find the methods to create peace. The third step is to shape our educational systems to incorporate training in peace.
The good news is that there is a group of people who has dedicated themselves to teaching others how to create personal peace and happiness. Many people in this group have joined 10 Million Clicks For Peace to offer their products as "Gifts of Peace" in the name of creating world peace. But we must do more than educate ourselves.
We must educate our children in peaceful methods, and we must help those who are suffering right now as a result of other's unpeaceful actions. By raising money to help war refugees, and by sponsoring peace education organizations that can help change our education systems: We can apply first aid and create a long-term solution.
By first healing ourselves through learning from the "Gifts of Peace," and helping war refugees whose immediate needs are staggering, and finally, by educating all the world's children in peace-creation methods, we can create a more beautiful and peaceful world and solve many of the difficulties we face today.
I am grateful that you have chosen to become part of the solution, rather than the masses who unknowningly contribute to the chaos. Thank you for spreading peace.
Many blessings,
Julian Kalmar, Founder 10 Million Clicks For Peace
