On the morning of September 18, two Greenpeace International activists were arrested as they protested Arctic oil drilling on the Gazprom platform, Prirazlomnaya, in the Pechora Sea off the Russian coast. They were held overnight without charges or legal representation aboard a Russian Coast Guard vessel.

The following day, September 19, the Russian Coast Guard then illegally boarded the Greenpeace International ship Arctic Sunrise while in international waters and is now holding 30 of our activists under armed guard. We are demanding the urgent release of all activists, the immediate withdrawal of the Coast Guard from our ship, and an end to offshore oil drilling in the Arctic for good.

Juliana is the two-year old girl that, together with her mother, was saved from the earthquake debris 3 days after it happened.

Unfortunately her mother Paula died from blood poisoning shortly after being saved, leaving Juliana and her 2 other children with her brother Stanley. Juliana needs medical care urgently, but wont be able to receive that in Haiti.

That's why Stanley and his sister (who is an official resident in Canada) decide to apply for a visa for Canada. All Haitian papers are in order, but getting a visa for Canada is more difficult then expected. The Canadian embassy in Port-au-Prince is also ruined by the earthquake, and Stanley is advised to travel to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

We have started a petition to offer to our Ministery of External Affairs. The more people sign the petition, the more pressure we can may be put on them to pursuade the Canadian officials to provide the right recidency papers, in time.

But we also offer this petition directly to the Canadian embassy. Who knows it might help.

Please help Juliana, sign the petition and forward it to everyone you know!

Thank you!

Last week, I signed a petition that was created by someone who - just like myself (and I am sure many other users) - was disappointed by the number of "nonsensical" petitions.

-Of which the subject doesn't make sense (what about "sign to protect "extint" animals."?),
-that have no clear goal
-or are simply so full of spelling mistakes that the petition doesn't make sense at all.

The creator of "Promote integrity in Care2 petitions" would like Care2 to edit petitions before putting them online.
And I thought many users would agree with her. So after forwarding it to everyone in my addressbook I was expecting to see many more signatures this week.
But much to my surprise,
only 61 people have signed so far.
And may I remind you, that this petition has been online for a couple of weeks?
So please, if you are concerned with the integrity of Care2, click the link below and sign. Thanks!

First of all, I want everyone to know that this petition has been succesfull:

It all started when the Rotterdam city council said they had been looking for a new home for the deer in the eastern part of the Netherlands. And they couldn't find any...
So there was no other option than to kill the deer. In their opinion.
But I think they "forgot" to look at what was right under their noses.

After publication of the story in a national newspaper,I started the petition and when 1,000 people had signed I created a report and offered it to the Rotterdam city council.
Several people offered a new home for the deer.
The city council looked into these offers and the deer were relocated to Pernis, which is actually not so far away from Overschie.
And as far a s I can tell: the deer all lived happily ever after...

Thanks everyone for signing, this petition is now closed!

Does that sound like your cup of tea?
Well, then I have something for you:

Just this week I stumbled upon a site that put it all together: Create A Pepper.
Its goal: raising funds to fight childhood cancer. All donations made go to St Jude's Research Hospital.

And how do they raise this money ?

When you go to the site you'll find all the materials needed to design your very own pepper.

It's funny and you don't have to be much of an artist.
The pepper above is the first one I made.
And then I made another one
and another...
and another...
and...
so on...
It IS kind of addictive really...

When you're satisfied with the result you submit your pepper and then you can make a donation to the hospital.

And better still: for US citizens, it involves a contest. Every week, the best three peppers will be chosen and awarded a gift voucher. The drawing dates are:

1st 9/7/07
2nd 9/14/07
3rd 9/21/07
4th 9/28/07

So, what are you waiting for?

Not just your average tent, but one that can be dropped in remote areas where disaster has struck.

With the "Airdrop Shelter" as a graduation project, Rita Giesbers (26) is elegible to win the Piet Bakker Prize. The prize for the most outstanding graduate from the Arts & Design Faculty at HKU (Hogeschool voor de Kunsten) in Utrecht.
But it doesn't stop there.
"I'm looking for investors, for example a green bank, or a green investment fund. People that want to invest in something good."

Last February, Giesbers graduated in industrial design.
In September 2005, people in Afghanistan died in the cold, because rescuers couldn't reach them. And that is what inspired her to design the "Airdrop Shelter".

"I discussed the possibility to help victims through the air with help organizations."

At MSF the people were interested in what she had to say.
With the help of a tent building specialist she put together the prototype.

The Airdrop Shelter is 5.5 metres across. "It is meant for a family, and can shelter six people."
The parachute that is used to drop it, also serves as the roof of the tent.
Giesbers: "On the inside it is decorated with joyful designs. Seeing those maybe will shift peoples minds away from their problems."

Why is it that some people copy (almost) an entire article into a reaction?  It seems to me that they don't have anything to say on the matter concerned.
And if that is the case, why don't they just "Note it!"and leave it at that?
It's no shame if you can't think of anything to say.

Copying an entire article drowns out the real reactions, that are generally shorter.
Thus making it more difficult to follow a discussion (or to start one, for that matter...)
So please: STOP copying!

Utrecht – There you are, in your office in the Peruvian capital Lima. The building around you is moving, and so is the computer on your desk.
After a few minutes the building is severely damaged by the strongest earthquake that has struck Peru since 1913.

Which is exactly what happened to Dutch student Marieke de Hoon. Since the event, she has been helping survivors to rebuild their lives.
One truck containing relief goods she collected, is already on its way to Huancavelica, one of the regions that suffered the most. A second one will follow shortly.

More than 500 people died in the quake, which had a force of 7.9 on the Richter scale.
“It wasn’t until I saw it on TV, that I realised how hard this had actually hit Peru,” Marieke says. “There have been about 600 aftershocks. One woke me up just the day before yesterday.”

Marieke de Hoon works at the Institute of Legal Defence in Lima. 200 kilometres away from the quake’s epicentre. Her workplace was damaged, but Marieke and her coworkers weren’t injured.
“The day after the quake I started collecting goods and money. On Thursday I contacted a couple of hostels I know in Miraflores, where many expats live. I collected money, clothes medication… anything you can think of. I just received a phone call from an American firm that wants to donate 1 million dollars!

The Peruvian government says they do everything they can, but actually they do very little. All government aid goes to a couple of places in Ica, where the camera’s are. The rest of the victims reeive no support at all. In rural areas there is no help from the government. It’s hard to see that people still are deprived of water and a roof over their head. They sleep in the streets, amidst smelling corpses and rats. Many hospitals collapsed, and blood and medication are scarse.”
