That's the name of the book I'm currently reading and absolutely loving!  It's the perfect read for a down-to-earth hippie like myself.  I like to buy organic produce, if I eat foods from animals like them to be hormone free from animals raised sustainably, and I like knowing where my food comes from.  This is a story of a family who decides to take on the challenge of being localvores for one year.  They grow fresh veggies in their garden and raise chickens for eats and meat.  If they don't have what they need in their garden they head to the farmer's market or call up friends on neighboring farms.  It's a neat story about a family that values their health and their quality time with one another.

Newsletter from Vermont Soap Organics...

Hey Folks,

This month's featured chemical is TRICLOSAN, America's favorite anti-microbial chemical. I was dubious when I was told that Triclosan is Agent Orange. Turns out they are cousins. It is also a bisphenol, now in the news for causing cancer when off gassed from plastics. For more information on Triclosan try these web pages:

http://www.townsendletter.com/May2006/healthrisk0506.htm http://www.madsci.org/posts/archives/2000-01/948068271.Mi.r.html http://oss.mcgill.ca/everyday/triclosan.pdf (disputes some of the claims against it) http://www.skinmdnatural.com/news.php?include=1230

The answer: Unless you do open heart surgery for a living - soap and water works just fine.

I got interested in Triclosan when a customer called and asked for me personally. He wanted to tell me that for over a year he had been severely depressed and suicidal. He was always the "happy guy" and the depression caused the breakup of his marriage and the loss of his job. He was trying to figure out if anything in his life had changed to cause his troubles. One morning he was reaching for his underarm deodorant (Old Spice High Endurance (TM)) - Triclosan is the high endurance part of the formula). His 14 year old son walked by on his way out the door to school and said; "Hey Pops, I don't know how you can use that stuff, it makes me all sad and stuff...."

It was then that he realized that a year ago he had changed from regular Old Spice deodorant to the High Endurance formula. 8 days after he stopped using it "the fog lifted" and he was his old self. After 2 weeks clean he started using it again. 6 days later his depression (with mild autistic symptoms) returned. He stopped using it, and 8 days later the fog cleared once more.

Last I heard the family was intact and back to normal. and that his old boss had hired him back. YEAH! This stuff is a nervine agent, possibly carcinogenic and possibly interacts with chlorine in the water to form chloroform.

Quite a bundle for something we never needed in the first place.......

Best Wishes, Larry Plesent & The Soap Crew www.vermontsoap.com

On a recent weekend I had a solo road trip planned up to beautiful Lake Tahoe. The day before I was scheduled to depart I received a Spare the Air Day notice about the next day. Spare the Air days are when air quality is bad and they ask you to avoid driving altogether by taking public transit or walking/biking to work. I try to bike or take the train on these days so I was pretty bummed when I learned I'd be adding to the problem. I looked up public transit alternatives and there weren't too many options. Then I decided to check Craigslist to see if anyone needed a ride. I posted an ad and received 3 responses. Out of the 3, one person named Woody, was a match for the time I was leaving and where I was headed. I was a pretty nervous about picking up some random stranger so I called him to get a sense of the reason for his trip and whether he sounded like someone I could handle a long car drive with. He sounded pretty chill on the phone so we arranged a time and place to meet.

I picked up Woody across the bay and we headed out towards Placerville. In the first 20 minutes of the car ride we realized we had all kinds of things in common. Woody was super kind, very respectful and he even read to me all the way to a town called Camino just east of Placerville. It was there that Woody was picking up a bus he had purchased on behalf of the non-profit he volunteers for called, Pastors for Peace. The book he read to me was really good, The Mastery of Love. I highly recommend it. It totally passed the time and took away any stress from the drive.

Just before I dropped Woody off he thanked me for using Craigslist. When I explained it was a Spare the Air Day and that I felt I should do my part by offering a ride he was even more stoked. His girlfriend would have had to drive him all the way up there and back just to drop him off if he hadn't found a ride. So not only did I get extra gas money for the drive and the bridge toll paid for but I also had an awesome companion for the journey.

I would totally consider using the ride share feature on Craigslist again.

Here's a short clip of Woody changing a flat on one of their buses on a past caravan to cuba (he's the one in the blue hat): http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x9tes_changingblowout2

My good friend Monica (pictured center above) is participating in the AIDS Foundation Lifecycle event this year.  I'm so proud of her and just made the first contribution to her goal of twenty-five hundred dollars.

I'm going to share her email with you because I think this is a great cause and a dedicated supporter...

"Hi Guys,

I hope you are all well!  I know that with the latest buzz towards philanthropy in today's world, many of you have been asking, "How can I give back to society?", "How can I make a difference??", or even  " How can I support a great cause and at the same time help some one I know great in great physical shape?"  Well I have the perfect solution to this problem, you can sponsor me in a charity bike ride!! How fantastic!! I'm going to be riding my bike from San Francisco to Los Angeles during the first week in June, it will be 545 miles over 7 days!! I will be raising money for Aids research while I do this!!! If you would like to sponsor me, my number is 2370 and here's a link:

I know that this might not be every one's favorite cause, but it is mine and I would greatly appreciate your support; and did you know.....

In July 1981, a small article in The New York Times reported the outbreak of a rare "cancer" among 41 gay men in New York and California. Few people imagined that an epidemic of monumental proportion was imminent.

Today, almost 22 million men, women and children worldwide have died of AIDS, and an estimated 40 million people are living with HIV. AIDS impacts people of all ethnicities, genders and sexual orientations.

It's Scary stuff!!

And for all of you that have the pleasure of working with me, I am doing this ride with Natalie and Maria as well so if you would like to make one donation for the three of us, let me know before you donate and we can work that out!!

Thank you sooooooooooo much!!!

-Monica

ps. It's tax deductible!!!!"

I'm putting this out there in case there's anyone else interested in supporting this fantastic rider in her pursuit to make a difference!

Bell Drifter Pin Stripe Helmets

Perfect Fit - Great looking helmet

5out of 5

Pros: Comfortable Padding, Stylish, Lightweight

Cons: Bulky

This helmet fits perfect. I had originally placed the order through a different vendor and their size charts were way off. When I saw how specific Ride Gear's size charts were, I decided to order from them instead. I'm used to the little, half shell, not-so-safe helmets but wanted to get something with better protection. This helmet is perfect because it's got great padding and protection but isn't as constricting as full-face helmets. It looks great and I'm very happy with the purchase.

Wednesday, August 29. is a Spare the Air Day in the Bay Area. Your morning commute is free on BART, CalTrain, ACE Train and all Bay Area Ferries until 1:00 pm. Bay Area bus systems are offering free rides all day. This is the 1st of four free commute days on non-holiday weekday Spare the Air days this summer. To find out more, and to view a list of participating transit agencies, see 511.org.

The summer 2007 Spare the Air season runs from June 1 through October 12. During the summer months ground-level ozone is the pollutant of concern. Ozone is formed when pollutants combine on hot summer days, and it accumulates when there is little wind.

In order to protect public health, the Air District issues Spare the Air advisories on days when air quality is forecast to be unhealthy due to high ozone levels. People who are especially sensitive to pollution are advised to limit their time outdoors, particularly in the afternoon hours. These advisories are posted on our web site, recorded on our 1 (800) HELP AIR forecast phone line, announced in local newspapers, and broadcast on local TV and radio stations.

On Spare the Air Days, we ask Bay Area residents to fight pollution by making clean air choices. These simple everyday actions include driving less, taking public transportation, trip-linking, walking, biking, choosing non-gasoline-powered lawn and garden equipment, and avoiding polluting household products.

The Spare the Air Program was established by the
Bay Area Air Quality Management District
to educate people about air pollution, and to encourage them to change their behavior to prevent it.

On this site you will find answers to frequently asked questions about air pollution, descriptions of its health effects, information about how various communities and employers are working to prevent pollution, clean air tips, and a variety of other educational resources.

In addition, the air quality forecast allows you to keep track of air quality conditions in your region of the Bay Area.

I went shopping last week for some cosmetics at Sephora. I got there right as they were closing so I did not have a chance to make a fuss over ingredients. The ladies helped me pick out some new powders from Laura Mercier. Afterwards, I headed home and looked up my new purchase in the Skin Deep database. They were rated a three for a similar powder to what I'd purchased...not bad but for the price I figured I could do better. So I started looking through the database and came across Alchemy of Colour Mineral Cosmetics on the Alchemist's Apprentice website. I placed an order for skin care, cosmetics, & hair care. I received my order today and I couldn't be more pleased. It came with a hand written card in eco-friendly packaging and included extra products that she thought I might like based on my purchase. Even more important, it came with information about every ingredient in their cosmetics. I'm so happy with the service. I haven't had a chance to try the products yet but would already recommend them to my friends.

Now I just have to find the time to ride my bike back to Sephora to return my previous purchase.  Luckily my favorite local brewery is just steps away.

I have the set with the black case and I love them. They're called To-Go Ware read more:

This utensil set is a toolkit to help reduce your ecological footprint and keep you connected to the world. Enjoy eating with organic utensils made of bamboo, which is highly durable and can be grown and harvested sustainably. "Throwaway" plastic cutlery consists of petrochemicals that create dioxins and other toxic chemicals harmful to the environment, as well as contributing to wasteful habits that feed the landfill rather than nourishing our lives. In addition, the holder itself has been produced by WEAVE, a women's cooperative on the Thai-Burma border. By purchasing this utensil set, you will have contributed to their advancement and empowerment, and made a positive impact to global community.

I try to keep mine in my purse for when we go to sushi to avoid using any of the throw away chopsticks that are made from trees. I also bring them on the V-O-Cal trips to avoid using disposables.

These make great gifts and I think the best part about them is they help spread awareness. Whenever I bust mine I hear someone say "Wow, nice..." giving the opportunity to explain more about them.

Sounds better than the Working Assets plan I've got but...then I checked out the phone selection and wasn't too impressed (and not the image posted is not a current option). Anyway, it's worth looking into...

Phone Company Offers Environmental Promise

It arrived last Monday: text messaging and anytime minutes behind a shiny silver faceplate. After a couple years of living cell phone-free, I finally found a company that makes me feel good about owning one. It’s consumer activism made sweet and easy.

Earth Tones is a phone and Internet company that donates 100% of its profits to environmental causes. That’s because it’s run by the environmental organizations it funds. If you’re not satisfied with choosing between AT&T and AT&T, but you still want the shiny silver faceplate with anytime minutes, then consider Earth Tones. In addition to cell phones, Earth Tones also provides long distance home phone, dial-up, and portable high-speed Internet services.

Their website may not have 3D animated effects, and my new phone can’t play itunes or brew my morning tea, but the phone was free, the plan’s inexpensive, and my satisfaction is solid green. (For those who are interested, many morning-tea-brewing-type phones are also available, like the Razr V3; you can even use your new iPhone.)

Which environmental non-profits does Earth Tones fund? Here’s a roll call:

Earth Tones still works through AT&T’s Cingular phone network, but for the same monthly rate your money can fund environmental initiatives. Here’s some more good news: if you currently own a phone that works with AT&T or if you have been yearning to get your hands on an iphone, you can use either with Earth Tones’ service.

Fewer cell phones these days contain toxic materials such as cadmium and lead, as an article from Inter Press Service discusses. However, your old phone may still contain these toxins; it is important to dispose of it safely. With proper cell phone disposal, you can prevent screen and battery chemicals from leeching into landfills (see this article from Cell Phones Etc.), raise funds for charity, and even earn a tax deduction. If you’re changing cell phones or getting rid of an old one, make sure it doesn’t end up in the trash. Visit earth911.org or recyclemycellphone.org, or donate your phone through your current wireless provider at the web addresses listed in this article on About.com.
