Greenpeace Dear Beatrice,March 17, 2009stop pirates

Pirate fishermen are pillaging the oceans, breaking the law, harming sea habitats and devastating ocean life. Surely, YOU wouldn't buy pirate loot if you saw it in the supermarket. But if pirate loot were in your supermarket would you even know? The reality is, probably not. Supermarkets unknowingly help these pirate fishermen by leaving critical information off seafood labels. When you buy certain fish, you have no idea if it comes from a pirate or not.

This has to end! Together, we can put pressure on supermarkets to change their policies. Today, I'm asking you to take your activism a step further by going into your supermarket and letting us know if you see any red list seafood. Ask the manager of the seafood counter or store to tell you about the store's seafood policies. Our activist toolkit gives you all the ammunition that you need to make a difference.

I don't want pirates in my supermarket. That's why I went to my local supermarket armed with the toolkit and looked for answers. It was very easy to do and didn't take much of my time. I looked at what was in the seafood counter and freezer section to see if my store sells red list seafood, and I asked the manager a few questions and wrote down his response. I was amazed at what I had uncovered! Not only were they selling fish commonly caught by pirates, they were also stocking the shelves with endangered fish. It was scandalous.

Greenpeace wants to gather as much data as we can. The more we know about each supermarket, the easier it will be to confront them and get them to change.

Pirate fishermen should walk the plank and get out of our supermarkets! Help us out today.

For the oceans,
John Hocevar
