By the late 1930s, the swift fox had disappeared from Canada, seemingly destined for the stuff of local folklore and reminiscences. Then a coalition of conservation groups joined together to give this tiny fox a shot at returning to Canada's prairies, and in 1983, captive-bred swift foxes were released. The swift fox was back!
Today, the swift fox has been upgraded to Endangered status in Canada -- but the future of the fox is fragile and still hanging on the brink.
In the southern band of Canada where 90% of us live, 85% of our terrestrial species at risk are battling for their lives, trying to coexist with us on dwindling fragments of our natural land.
We must fight to ensure that not one of the over 600 Canadians species at risk will go extinct or become extirpated like the swift fox was once. Pledge to support conservation efforts to save Canada's at-risk species like the swift fox today.
Yahoo Japan is selling whale and dolphin meat including from animals killed in Taiji, Japan! Yes, it's selling dolphins and whales killed at "The Cove."
I've been here in Japan since January, and I have seen hundreds of animals killed before my eyes. I will never be able to forget their cries and the blood red water as killers slaughter these intelligent, sensitive beings!
Amazon.com, the largest online retailer in the world, stopped selling dolphin and whale meat. Why can't Yahoo put the same policy in place for all its sites around the world - including Japan?
The Humane Society International and Environmental Investigation Agency have not been able to convince Yahoo to change despite evidence of meat contaminated with high levels of mercury and sometimes from animals protected by the International Whaling Commission. I need your help, though, because I know we can do this!
Here are some links if you need proof that Yahoo is selling these products right now!
Despite the strong support, there is no internationally recognized agreement that concerns the welfare of all animals on the planet. Many activists and animal rights groups are hoping to change this by putting the pressure on the United Nations (U.N.) to formally adopt the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW).
First and foremost, the UDAW will see to it that all animals are considered sentient beings—capable of thinking and knowing the pains of suffering. Once this is established, the stage would be set for future legislation which could do wonders on behalf of animals. Governments would be encouraged to improve already existing animal rights and welfare legislation, businesses will have to take into account their policies on animals and animal-driven work; and perhaps most importantly, peoples’ attitudes and relationships towards the animals will change as common ground is established between all species.
On the other end, humans, too, will benefit largely from a UDAW agreement, including: protecting the resources that countless people around the world depend upon: providing a more sustainable base for the world’s food supply, and granting greater sway for additional progressive moves in the future.
What it really comes down to us proving to the world that animals matter. Already well over 2 million people—as well as animal rights groups like the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), the Humane Society of the United States (HSU, and the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW)—have signed on to support the Universal Declaration of Animal Welfare; but as we take on this new year we need to continue our efforts and show the world that this is an issue the world needs to get behind
The Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT) was recently raided, interrogated and harassed by officials from Thailand’s Department of National Parks. Department officials threatened WFFT members and captured over 100 exotic animals from various WFFT locations before subjecting them to cruel and inhumane treatment. Ask Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to use her power and influence to stop these egregious efforts by the Thai government and make sure that these precious animals are treated properly and returned to the WFFT.
The WFFT is respected worldwide as one of the most important conservation groups for their work that includes saving, protecting and rehabilitating the exotic animals of Thailand. Members of the group have spoken out repeatedly against the rampant poaching that is occurring in Thailand, including the horrible capture and sale of baby elephants to tourism businesses who offer elephant rides. Some people believe it is the group’s vocal activism that led to the unbelievably irresponsible and illegal search and seizure of animals from the WFFT by Thailand’s Department of National Parks. The government agency, which is supposed be helping to save and protect these animals, raided multiple WFFT sites, demanding that members provide registration for over 400 animals within 2 and a half hours. They seized over 100 animals and put them in rusty cages, including sensitive animals that were about to be released into the wild. These animals have been transferred to facilities where they are held in improper conditions by unqualified caretakers. In addition to these crimes against animals, the Department also threatened and bullied members of the WFFT.
The WFFT’s work is crucial for the conservation of wild species, as well as the ongoing battle against poachers. The Department of National Parks compromised their commitment to the preservation of Thailand’s wildlife when they conducted these illegal raids that have left the animals far worse off than they were under the care of the WFFT. Instead of relying on the Department as an ally in the fight for conservation, the WFFT must now fight to get their animals back. Ask Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to condemn the actions of the government and put these animals back in safety.
On March 5th Frederick, Colorado planned to begin killing off the two largest colonies of prairie dogs known to be residing in the town. An ordinance was also introduced that will require private landowners to ‘remove’ them from their land because of health concerns. Frederick is planning on bringing in a private company called Rocky Mountain Wildlife Services to inhumanely poison the animals. If private property owners refuse to slaughter the prairie dogs on their land, they will be subject to receiving a ticket and be hit with a fine of up to $1,000. It is doubtful that the town of Frederick cannot devise a better plan for easing their concerns about the health of their citizens or any other hidden desires they have, without harming natural wildlife needlessly.
Killing off entire colonies of a species should not even be a last resort in any situation and yet it seems this Colorado town is putting this ‘solution’ at the top of its list. If the current colonies are successfully poisoned and removed, additional animals could decide to move in soon after. Will the town continue to follow their new ordinance and require landowners to keep killing any prairie dogs on their properties indefinitely? If this mentality is accepted and pushed upon the town, prairie dogs could be in danger of being completely eradicated. Frederick officials must take this into consideration before blindly demanding that all private property owners kill off animals. There are at least 30 other species of animals that depend directly on the prairie dog for survival. There are an additional 117 species that benefit from the presence of these animals in their environment. Jeopardizing this many species along with the prairie dogs themselves is just inhumane and irresponsible.
Additional options should be explored by this town in order to keep the environment happy and stable while keeping any health concerns at bay. Officials cannot ignore any health issues brought about by these prairie dogs, which is understandable, but killing them off is not the solution. Children must be protected, of course, but working together to find a humane solution will also help teach citizens and young children alike that killing animals is not the answer. Compassion is the key here and all people need to embrace compassionate behavior more often. Not only will this lead to a more cooperative society, but also a better maintained one that will not suffer environmentally due to the rash decisions of town officials.
Harp seals are already drowning because of melting ice. The surviving population, despite age, is then subject to murderous clubbing. Although Harp seals are a focus, Hooded seal and Grey seal populations are also affected.
Canadian fishermen kill seals to gain extra profit on the side. Seals are killed for profits from their pelts and oils. At times, when seals are clubbed, they do not die immediately but rather experience a slow and agonizing death.
Sign and help end the inhumanity.
Suggested options of action: Boycotting Canadian Seafood, writing a letter to relevant politicians and/or businesses, simply signing and spreading knowledge of the issue.
Every year, Denmark hosts an annual whale killing event as a sporting event. This is cruel and harmful to our ocean mammals, and we must stop it. Please sign this petition and tell your friends and family so that we can make a difference to save our whales.
This return to archaic and cruel tradition is a disgrace for Kyrgyztan.
These noble animals deserve respect and protection of their population!
This 2 day festival on the northern shore of Lake Issyk Kul in the town of Cholpon-Ata draws the regions best hunting dogs, eagle hunters, and falcon handlers in all of Kyrgyzstan.
Festivities range from eagle hunting of pheasants; Taigen also known as Kyrgyz hunting dog racing; to wolf baiting.
The final event of the festival is only opened to the most respected Berktuchi and Taigen who must hunt a live wolf. This fierce and sometimes gory battle frequently results in mortal wounds. For the sake of sportsmanship, festival officials attempted to place a bit in the wolf’s mouth to no avail, settling for a heavy chain tethering her to a lead weight. Within rural communities, Kyrgyz have long raised Taigen and trained Eagles to protect both the lives of their livestock and family. This captured wolf was responsible for killing 68 sheep, 20 cows, and 17 horses. Such an unfathomable number of lost cattle and sheep is enough to impoverish any community.
The Idaho Senate is currently considering passing S.B. 1305, which allows ranchers to use forms of "live bait"- including innocent cats and dogs!- to draw in wolves to kill. Putting dogs and cats through this kind of stress has severe psychological impacts, and the stress of being used as bait can even result in the death of dogs and cats.
This bill also allows aerial gunning from powered parachutes and ultralight airplanes, as well as bowhunting- methods known to frequently leave animals maimed!
Despite my multiple e-mails to my district's senators and other Idaho state senators, this bill has still passed committee and is now being deliberated by the full senate. The Idaho Senate simply doesn't want to face the music and admit that this bill is nothing more than animal cruelty. The war on wolves in Idaho has gone far enough.
Sign this petition and tell the Idaho Senate that enough is enough- wolves deserve to live, and so do innocent cats and dogs!
Those of us who care about animals have to do all that we can to stop an institution as prestigious and respected as the University of Michigan from subjecting thinking, feeling animals to painful, invasive procedures, especially when state-of-the-art human simulators are sitting idle, waiting to be used to teach the same skills in other courses. Your actions today will send a message to all university laboratories that still engage in animal experimentation!
Help stop deadly animal tests like those that killed Tiger!
