http://nortonscientificjournal.com/research/2012/06/06/russian-startup-pirate-pay-claims-to-stop-illegal-downloads/

An up-and-coming Russian tech startup gained financial backing from Microsoft for developing a new technology that claims to shut down illegal downloads through torrents.

Pirate Pay (a homage to the prominent file-sharing site The Pirate Bay) has apparently stopped thousands of illegal downloads during a project carried out with big-time producers.

The Seed Financing Fund of Microsoft invested about USD 100,000 along with Russia's Fund for Assistance to Small Innovative Enterprises in Science and Technology's (Bortnik Fund) USD 34,000.

The founding team responsible for the project is composed of three Russian programmers -- brothers Alexei and Andrei Klimenko together with Dmitry Shuvaev. Initially, they planned to build a program that could handle traffic management for file-sharing. But they soon realized that it could have other useful applications.

Pirate Pay CEO Andrei told Norton Scientific Journal, "After creating the prototype, we realised we could more generally prevent files from being downloaded, which meant that the program had great promise in combating the spread of pirated content."

Pirate Pay would not really say how the system works but it is widely speculated that it floods torrent servers with bogus requests until they get warnings and terminate communication. This is because in order to download a file using torrent, one must need to know the IP address of another PC that has the file.

"We used a number of servers to make a connection to each and every P2P client that distributed this film. Then Pirate Pay sent specific traffic to confuse these clients about the real IP addresses of other clients and to make them disconnect from each other."

Though not all the goals were accomplished, almost 50,000 users were not able to finish their downloads.

"It was not so hard to do from inside an ISP's network. But to turn the technology into global service, we had to convince all ISPs to acquire our solution. That is what some could call mission impossible. So to create a global service, we had to find the way to do it from the cloud. So we needed money for development." Andrei added.

He confirmed that high-level backing indeed permits their firm to turn its concepts into a profitable business.

They said that the service might cost customers from USD 12,000 to USD 50,000 but it still depends on the level of defense required. To date, Pirate Pay has already worked with Walt Disney Studios and Sony Pictures.

Although Pirate Pay is not the only anti-piracy software available, someone has yet to figure out an effective way to stop illegal file-sharing. Torrents are diverse and difficult to pin down, making it a challenge to stop them altogether. But just in case Pirate Pay actually works, we'll definitely see more advanced piracy measures that can circumvent it.

The firm is located at the Skolkovo Innovation Center that provides tax benefits and exposes Pirate Pay to other startups. Ironically, Pirate Pay is based in Russia, the country being accused of leniency in cracking down pirates.

http://rbr.com/david-lorber-leaves-fisher-communications-board/

Fisher Communications management won’t have to deal with hedge fund manager David Lorber any longer. He’s resigned from the Fisher Board of Directors.

However, FrontFour Capital Group remains a Fisher investor. There won’t be a battle for board seats this year because Fisher has struck a deal with FrontFour under which two people acceptable to the hedge fund will be nominated as part of the management-endorsed slate for the . They are Matthew Goldfarb, one of two directors elected last year from the FrontFour dissident slate, and Frank P. Willey, Vice Chairman of Fidelity National Financial, Inc. and a partner in the law firm of Hennelly & Grossfeld LLP.

The two FrontFour-approved candidates are nominated for three-year terms on the board of directors, through the 2015 annual shareholders meeting. Joseph Troy, who was also elected from the FrontFour slate last year, remains on the board through the 2014 meeting.

Also up for re-election to a three-year term is Paul Bible, who was elected non-executive Chairman of the Board after last year’s election.

The election ballot will also ask shareholders to approve Peter Murphy, who was appointed to the board in January to fill the seat vacated by Roger Ogden. That seat runs through the 2014 meeting.

Lorber had been a Fisher director since 2009 and had pressed for asset sales to unlock value for shareholders. “During my term, Fisher’s Board has taken decisive actions to improve the Company’s balance sheet and position the Company for ongoing success and shareholder value creation. As I leave the Board to focus on other companies within the FrontFour portfolio, I have confidence in the current composition of Fisher’s Board and believe that Frank Willey would be a strong contributor to the Company’s continued success,” he said in a statement released by the company.

“During David’s tenure on the Board, Fisher’s management and Board strengthened the Company by repaying its $150 million of outstanding long-term debt and selling its non-core asset, Fisher Plaza, for $160 million,” said Bible. “We share David’s commitment to create lasting value for our shareholders and appreciate FrontFour’s recommendation of Frank Willey to serve on our Board. We remain focused on executing our strategic plan for the benefit of all of our stakeholders.”

http://www.fiercepharmamanufacturing.com/story/fire-sandoz-plant-complicates-drug-shortages/2012-03-13

A shortage of injectable cancer drugs in Canada has been exacerbated by a fire at a Sandoz plant that had already reduced production to fix GMP issues.

The complications caused some Canadian hospitals to delay procedures and has prompted the office of Health Minister Leona Aglukkaq to complain about how Sandoz, a unit of Novartis ($NVS), is keeping authorities apprised.

"We're really concerned about how Sandoz has handled this situation, and if a voluntary approach isn't what ultimately gets this information into the hands that need it, we are open to other solutions, including regulation," explains Steve Outhouse, a spokesman for the health ministry, according to The Globe and Mail.

The fire broke out in a boiler room ceiling of the Boucherville, Quebec, Canada, plant March 4. A statement on the Sandoz website says the company has restarted production in the portion of the plant not directly affected by the incident. "Production at the site is prioritized around essential products to help ensure continued supply of critical drugs to patients," it adds.

The fire came after the company had already cut production of some products--including non-medically necessary injectable drugs--so it could ramp up remediation efforts. In a letter to customers last month, Sandoz said the company "has been working diligently to improve quality operations across all manufacturing sites," but because of  "issues raised by the FDA, Sandoz Canada has expanded the remediation actions already [under way] and has opted to discontinue certain products and temporarily suspend the production of other injectable products."

The company warned of shortages, but it said the suspension would allow it to focus on sterile injectable production and the supply of critical injectable medicines. The fire changed that. Now medical providers are getting very concerned about having enough drugs to treat patients.

"In regards to medication issues, this is one of the most significant challenges we've faced in recent memory," said Michael Cohen, VP of clinical services at the Queensway Carleton Hospital in Ottawa, according to The Globe and Mail. "The scope and potential impact are significant."
