I'm a rape survivor, and I'm asking TV Parental Guidelines to include a warning for when episodes of TV depict sexual violence.
Sign Marcie's Petition

Trigger warning: this email contains information about sexual assault that may be upsetting to survivors.
It's been almost 25 years since I was sexually assaulted, but in a moment, it can feel like it was yesterday. I see an upsetting scene on TV, and I am 14 and powerless. I start to feel anxious and depressed. And then I get angry.
I'm angry that this happened to me, but I'm also angry that I was put in the position of having to relive it without any warning. There are TV ratings for violence, but not sexual violence -- which is a very specific, painful experience for millions. A “Sexual Violence” warning could allow survivors like me to decide for ourselves whether we're feeling up to seeing something that could trigger traumatic memories of our own experiences.
Statistics say that 1 in 5 American women will be sexually assaulted in her lifetime. I work in a crisis center for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, so I know all too well what those statistics look in real life.
The survivors I have met through my work are strong and inspiring. They struggle through good days and bad to move past horribly violent and emotionally devastating experiences. Asking for sexual violence warnings on TV is one small thing we can do to make survivors’ lives easier. To have that peace of mind that at the end of a hard day, when you relax in front of the TV, you won't be pulled back to the worst night of your life.
The TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board has already recognized the importance of calling out specific kinds of violence on TV; for example, they have a "Fantasy Violence" label for children's programming. I know that if enough people sign my petition, they'll adopt a "Sexual Violence" warning to give survivors like me and the women I work with the power to make informed decisions about what to watch.
Thank you,
Marcie Kaveney

Subject: Teaching kids gay adults aren't normal

The Boy Scouts of America are finally considering admitting gay youth -- but they may not even allow a vote on allowing gay moms like me to be leaders. I'm calling for a fair up-or-down vote to allow gay parents to serve.

One year ago, I was told I couldn't lead my son's Cub Scout pack anymore because I'm gay. I was told to shut my mouth and go away. But I didn't do that. I fought back, and now the Boy Scouts of America (BSA) are finally considering allowing gay kids. But they may not even allow a vote on whether to admit gay leaders.

Last Friday, the BSA quietly announced that it has endorsed a resolution to allow gay kids to be Boy Scouts, and that resolution will be voted on at the BSA's national council meeting in May. But the resolution would not allow gay leaders. This means a boy could go through the entire scouting program, even become an Eagle Scout, but then? As soon as you become an adult? Get out. You're not welcome anymore.

The good news is that the Los Angeles Area Boy Scout Council has submitted a resolution to allow gay scouts AND gay leaders to be part of the Boy Scouts -- but the BSA might not allow that resolution to have a fair up-or-down vote at the national council meeting.

I started a petition on Change.org calling on the BSA to give a fair up-or-down vote for the resolution that would allow gay leaders -- will you click here to sign?

It's amazing that the Boy Scouts might finally allow gay kids -- after all, this is the organization that went to the Supreme Court to uphold its right to discriminate just a decade ago. This colossal step forward is thanks to a year of hard work from families like mine and organizations like GLAAD and Scouts for Equality.

But the idea of allowing gay kids but not gay parents is heartbreaking and insulting. The BSA shouldn't tell kids that gay adults aren't to be trusted. The BSA has no business telling my son that I'm not as good as any other mom.

We've already seen how much change we can create when we pressure the Boy Scouts to do the right thing. I know that if enough people sign my petition, we can get a fair up-or-down vote for gay scouts AND leaders at the national council meeting this May.

We've come too far to stop fighting now.

Click here to sign my petition calling on the BSA to allow a fair up-or-down vote on the LA Council resolution to allow gay scouts AND leaders.

Thank you for standing with moms like me.

Subject: Why Are We Still Paying For This?

Our country is preparing to spend more than $600 billion over the next decade to maintain and upgrade a nuclear weapons arsenal that was designed to fight the Cold War. It just doesn't make sense. Please urge your representative to support legislation to cut spending on nuclear weapons.
As Congress debates the federal budget, they are deciding how many low-income families will lose monthly housing assistance; how many women and children will face cutbacks in food support; how local governments will maintain bridges, sewers and roads; and how much money to pour into perpetuating a nuclear arsenal that is both immoral and unnecessary.
Rep. Ed Markey (MA) and 40 other representatives have proposed the Smarter Approach to Nuclear Expenditures (SANE) Act, which would cut at least a $100 billion from spending on nuclear weapons over the next 10 years. Find out if your representative has cosponsored this legislation. Then write her or him a letter urging support of this important bill or appreciation for signing on as a cosponsor.
This proposal, H.R. 1506, would nearly halve the number of nuclear-armed submarines in the U.S. arsenal, cancel plans for the F-35 fighter jet and the $10 billion B61 nuclear bomb refurbishment project, stop construction of a uranium processing facility in Oak Ridge, TN to make materials for new nuclear weapons, and more.
The SANE Act would save money, cut back on outdated U.S. nuclear weapons, and make our country safer. Ask your representative to add his or her name as a supporter of this proposal today.
Thank you,
Diane Randall
Executive Secretary

Sender: Vinny DeMarco, Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence
Date: Thu, 16 May 2013
Subject: Maryland Takes a Stand to Prevent Gun Violence

The Moving Maryland Forward Network

Maryland ranks 22nd in the nation in gun deaths with 11.5 people per 100,000 killed each year by gunfire. Last month, Maryland lawmakers took a firm step forward to reduce this number. On April 4th, they passed the landmark Firearm Safety Act of 2013, which made Maryland one of our nation’s leading states in passing effective gun violence prevention legislation.

This legislation requires handgun purchasers to first obtain a fingerprint-based background check and license from the State Police. A report from the Johns Hopkins Center for Gun Policy and Research shows that these requirements are one of the most effective tools a state can use to prevent guns from getting into the hands of criminals and others who would use them to kill or injure.

The new law also bans assault weapons, limits gun magazines to no more than 10 bullets, gives the state the needed authority to better regulate gun dealers, requires gun owners to report lost or stolen guns, prohibits persons with probations before verdict for violent crimes from getting guns, and increases penalties for the use in crime of cop-killer bullets.

Marylanders to Prevent Gun Violence, in partnership with Moving Maryland Forward Network, is asking supporters to stand behind Governor Martin O’Malley and our state legislators as they enact this landmark legislation. With strong support ... with your support ... we'll make sure the Firearm Safety Act is fully implemented so that we reduce gun violence across our state and save lives.

So please, add your voice in support of a strong implementation of this law.

Sincerely,
Ingrid Lofgren

Take action. Tell the Senate we need reform. Add your name.
We learned last week that the epidemic of sexual assault in the military is more pervasive than we even knew, and we knew it was bad. In the last two years, sexual assaults are up 30%, to 26,000 instances. The news also broke that the officer in charge of the Air Force’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response Program was himself arrested for sexual battery.

We can’t allow this to continue.

That's why this week I’m introducing a bill that will reform how the military handles sexual assault cases, and take on the culture that perpetuates criminal behavior.

Letting this injustice continue fails the servicemen and women, sons and daughters, husbands and wives, who have sacrificed so much for our freedom.

We must do better by them and we must do it now. Will you join me and Senators Franken, Blumenthal, and Boxer in calling on the Senate to right this wrong?

Click here to urge the Senate to pass my bill so we can bring justice to the victims of sexual assault, and accountability to those who perpetuate these crimes.

I recently held the first Senate hearing on this issue in almost 10 years. Editorial boards at newspapers across the country are behind us.

We have the momentum, we have the will, and we are on the side of justice. Now we need to speak out to fix a broken system that contributes to a culture that perpetuates too many assaults and too little accountability.

Click here to add your voice and call on the Senate to pass my bill without delay.

We owe this – at least this – to the men and women who have given up so much for us. They deserve this most basic level of respect and justice.

Thank you,

Kirsten

Sandy Hook Promise has created a wonderful Mother's Day Card to honor the moms who lost their children in the Newtown tragedy, and other moms whose children have been taken by acts of violence. I hope you'll join me in sharing the link below, and signing the Card at:
Ana, Dylan, Daniel and Ben can’t wish their Moms a Happy Mother’s Day this May or ever again.

For the Sandy Hook children and the thousands of other children in America whose lives were cut short by gun violence, please sign this Mother’s Day card.

  • Ben Wheeler
To their Moms,
We mourn your loss and promise to do all we can to prevent tragedies like this from happening ever again.

Here's a personal message from Mark Barden, who lost his son in the shooting:
Nearly five months ago, my wife Jackie and I lost our son, and our children James and Natalie lost their little brother, Daniel. Our sweet seven-year-old was one of 20 children and six adults whose lives were taken on December 14, at Sandy Hook Elementary. It feels like only yesterday. In our deepest grief, we have been supported by the love and prayers we've received from millions of Americans, and from every corner of the country. Thank you for letting us know we're not alone.
As Mother's Day approaches, we understand that we represent just a few of the families who have lost children and loved ones to gun violence. Our friends at Sandy Hook Promise have put together this card to give you another opportunity to support not only the Moms of Newtown, but Moms everywhere whose children have been taken by acts of violence. You can click below to sign a Mother's Day card from Sandy Hook Promise. http://www.sandyhookpromise.org/mothersday#sthash.oUVSLKQf
Join me in letting all the mothers know – mothers of Sandy Hook and beyond – that their children are not forgotten this Mother's Day. And neither are they. The Sandy Hook Promise begins this way: "Our hearts are broken; Our spirit is not."Thank you for helping to sustain our spirit.I wish you and your family the best,
Mark

Lost - or found - a pet? Check out these local/national websites dedicated to helping you get reunited! (Or, better yet, register with them now - JUST IN CASE!)

Parkville, Maryland (but has helpful tips for anyone): http://harfordpark.org/lost-pets

Baltimore Maryland: www.baltimorelostcats.org (on facebook: “Lost and Found Cats of Baltimore”

In MD/DC/VA/PA/DE: http://dogsfindingdogs.com/

What to do if you lose your dog (or cat)
First, don’t delay in getting the word out that your pet is missing by checking with neighbors and getting signs posted. There are some great tips and advice available through the Baltimore County Animal Shelter and other resources like HSUS, which are provided below.
Tips
1. Be sure to take a current photo of your pet(s) in case they get out or lost so it can be posted right away on Nextdoor and on flyers.
2. Make sure your pets are collared with ID tags. Just having a vet tag doesn’t help at night or on the weekends since no one is there to answer the phone and look up their ID number. Please get a tag made with your pet’s name and a contact phone number so when they are found you can be contacted right away. (We found 2 dogs with only a vet tag and had to keep them in our backyard until someone came looking for them or until the vet opened up the next day.)
3. If you have a Facebook page, please join the groups that are located in Parkville so the word can spread fast that your pet is missing. Pet lovers will always help!!
Dogs Finding Dogs
One option to consider is contacting a local group, Dogs Finding Dogs, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization of highly trained handlers and dogs that can track and find a lost pet. They ask for a nominal donation to show up for a track, to cover the team’s expenses for transportation. Their goal is to reunite you with your pet as soon as possible. They will advise you on what steps to take and when. Dogs Finding Dogs offers more than just tracking teams and can be instrumental in reuniting you with your pet using a variety of methods. Their contact information is as follows:
Website: www.dogsfindingdogs.com
Phone: 410-908-6374
Email: dogsfindingdogs@gmail.com
Tips for Finding Your Pet (from the Dogs Finding Dogs website)
  • Be sure that your pet wears some sort of identification at all times. Have your pet micro-chipped. It is virtually pain free and any vet can insert it for you.
  • Check with people in your neighborhood.
Talk to your neighbors, mail carriers and newspaper delivery people, anyone who spends time in your neighborhood who might have seen your pet.
  • Make a poster. Include a description and photo of your pet. Offer a reward. It doesn’t have to be large, but any reward may motivate people to help the search. Decide what you think is a fair amount. Include your telephone number
  • Put your poster up around town. Post it on street corners and in area shops. Many places like libraries and supermarkets have bulletin boards that you can post it on.
  • Flyers! Flyers and More Flyers! Put them up everywhere! Hand them out to everyone!
  • You can post a report on the internet with many different sites.
  • Call local animal shelters to check if they have your animal. If not, ask if you can leave a description along with your telephone number in case your pet turns up there. Even better, go to the shelter and look for your pet.

Lost Pet Hours
Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
View lost cats and dogs that were turned into the Baltimore County Animal Shelter or picked up as a stray animal. Remember, licensing, tagging, and micro-chipping your pets increases the chances of them being returned to you should they become lost.
If you lose your pet or find one, the Lost Pet Brochure (PDF) provides steps on what to do and how to protect your pet from becoming lost. Here is the information from the brochure:
Search Shelters
Visit the Baltimore County Animal Shelter and other local animal shelters in person to look for your pet. Be sure to take proof of ownership (rabies vaccination or licensing record) with you to the shelters to claim your pet, should you find it. Unless your pet is wearing its required license or other form of identification, shelter staff may not be able to assist you over the phone. File a lost pet report and attach a clear photograph. If your pet is a purebred, ask for a referral to the area breed rescue group.
Make Follow-up Visits and Calls
Visit the shelter every few days, but call daily to see if your pet is at our Shelter, as we receive a large number of pets from day-to-day.Remember, calling the shelter only, may not help staff identify your pet if it is not wearing identification. The Baltimore County Animal Shelter is equipped to hold lost animals only for the mandated four-day “stray hold period” as cited in the Baltimore County Code. After the four days, the animal is considered abandoned, and becomes the property of Baltimore County. The animal may be adopted to a new home, sent to a rescue group, legally claimed by the person who rescued it or euthanized.
Check Your Pet’s Favorite Places
Search your own property thoroughly. Have a flashlight handy so that you can look into dark places. For cats, don’t forget to look up into trees and down into stormwater drains. Consider renting a humane cat trap from a rental center. When searching for your pet, take your pet’s favorite squeaky toy and a box of treats. Squeak the toy and rattle the box while calling your pet. Then pause, be quiet, and listen for a response from your pet. Talk with everyone who lives or works in the area. Ask them to keep an eye out for your pet.
Post “LOST PET” Flyers
Post “lost pet” flyers with a photo and description of your pet at the following locations: Animal Shelters Groomers Vet Clinics Pet Stores Use big, bold lettering. Include your phone number and neighborhood. Do not include your name or address.
Place Ads on the Internet
Place a notice in Craigslist under the “lost and found” column. Consider offering a reward, but do not specify the amount. Withhold one or two features about your pet, so if someone calls you, there will be a way to be sure that it is your pet that they have. Beware of scam artists who take advantage of worried pet owners.
Lost Pet Prevention Tips
  • Have your pet micro-chipped as a permanent form of identification. This painless procedure does not substitute for a pet license, but it can help to return your pet. The Baltimore County Animal Shelter offers micro-chipping for $25, by appointment only.
  • Attach an identification tag, rabies tag, and license to your dog or cat’s collar. Check the tags often to be sure that they are clear and easy to read.
  • Keep your cat safe indoors and keep your dog leashed or inside a secure, fenced yard. It is a violation of County law to allow animals to run at large.
  • Get your pet spayed or neutered. Pets that are “fixed” are less likely to roam away from home and they tend to live longer, healthier lives.
