The Moving Maryland Forward Network

Thank you for being a valuable supporter of the Moving Maryland Forward Network (MMFN). Over the past year and a half, we've raised our voices on a diverse array of issues facing Maryland, ensuring education equity, speaking out for the prevention of youth homelessness, right to earn paid sick days, passage of marriage equality, and to fight abusive mortgage practices.

This summer we have a new opportunity for you.

We're launching our MMFN Text Message of the Week. Every Thursday, we will send you one interesting fact or quiz about an issue. You'll be able to respond and interact with these text messages to take action in our campaigns or share with a friend. All the facts and answers to our quizzes can be found on the MMFN blog. The weekly texts will begin next week!

You can sign up for our mobile alerts using the link above OR you can simply text MMFN to 877877.

We promise we won't bury you in text messages. Mobile subscribers will just receive the one fact or quiz each week through the end of the summer. As always, you can easily unsubscribe from our text messages by replying STOP to any message you receive from us.

Thank you for your support, and believing in fairness, justice and equality for all Marylanders.

We look forward to continuing our work together to Move Maryland Maryland Forward.

Subject: VIDEO: The tour begins

On Friday, the No More Names bus tour left Newtown, CT to bring the personal stories of gun violence victims and survivors directly to the doorsteps of our elected leaders.

Please watch a brief video we made of the launch event in Newtown, then donate $33 or more to keep the No More Names bus going to key states.
Watch this video from the No More Names launch and donate today
More than 250 people attended Friday's launch in Newtown, and more than 30 press outlets covered the event.1

Our goal is to visit 25 states over the next 100 days. We'll be stopping in each state to read the names of more than 6,000 people who have been murdered with guns since the mass shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary.

At each stop on the tour we'll confront members of Congress and make sure they know that every day they delay common sense gun reform, more names will be added to the thousands who've already been murdered with guns since Newtown.

But to keep the tour going and reach key states across the country, we need donations from supporters like you.

Your donation will go farther at the start of the tour -- so please give $33 or more right now:

https://donate.demandaction.org/donate/NMN_Donation1/

Thanks for all you do,

Mark Glaze
Mayors Against Illegal Guns

P.S. -- The No More Names bus tour won't reach all 25 states without your support, Suzanne. Please give $33 or more today.

Social Security is one of Americas most important institutions. After years of hard work and paying into the system, many seniors rely on it to stay afloat late in life. The $112 billion in cuts to Social Security that some people in Washington are pushing for would be absolutely devastating.

Two years ago, President Obama stood up during his State of the Union address and said something we can all agree with: we should strengthen Social Security without cutting the benefits of current retirees.

But these days President Obama and others in DC keep talking about something called Chained CPI. It's not a term many people are familiar with, but it would involve adjustments to Social Security that would mean $112 billion in cuts over ten years.

That huge a cut to Social Security will only hurt those who can least afford it.

The chained CPI proposal would lower the yearly cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for current retirees, leaving seniors struggling to keep up with the rising cost of prescriptions, utilities, and health care.

Send a letter to President Obama today and tell him to reject these cuts and keep his promise to protect seniors on Social Security.

Even though chimpanzees have been listed as "endangered" since the 1990s, captive ones are still being used in science experiments all over the country. But with our help, that could change.

Chimpanzees have been listed as endangered since the 1990s. But because captive chimpanzees aren't included in that designation, researchers have been able to use these intelligent, sensitive animals for science experiments.
Now, though, there's some hope for captive chimpanzees. A new proposal by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service would put all chimpanzees under the protection of the Endangered Species Act -- including those who are currently passing their lives alone in cages.
Hunting and habitat loss have reduced the world's population of chimps from over a million to only 300,000 in a hundred years. It is vital that we save the remaining chimps before it's too late.

The USFS is currently taking public comments on the proposal. Sign the petition to support passing the act and saving chimps today.

Dear Suzanne Benson,
Members of Congress are hearing a lot from Pentagon contractors right now. But congressional staff tell us they’re not hearing enough from other people who are seeing—and in some cases feeling—the effects of deep cuts to human needs programs. This week, while members of Congress are home for the Memorial Day recess, please join us to send a new message each day to the offices of your senators.
Persistence matters – that’s the message we’re hearing from Congress.
Today, for Memorial Day, remind your senators that the federal government could buy a home for every homeless veteran in the United States with the amount of money that Lockheed-Martin receives in just one year. You can find more of these comparisons on our website.
Your messages are making a difference. As you know, current law requires the core Pentagon budget to be cut by $1 trillion over the next decade. But senators from both major political parties are trying to reverse these cuts. Just last week, a key House committee voted to protect Pentagon spending by making deep cuts to effective government programs that keep young people and the elderly out of poverty.
Will you make sure your senators' local offices are hearing you all this week? Because your senators will be back in your state this week, we’ll be sending out an email every day offering you a way to act. I hope you’ll join us. You can follow along on our website, on Facebook and on Twitter. If you don’t want to receive all these emails this week, just let us know.
Thank you,
Diane Randall
Executive Secretary

Dear Suzanne,

Thank you for for standing up to state lawmakers who are trying to cut abortion coverage from private health insurance.

In the first three months of 2013, state lawmakers introduced 326 restrictions on abortion. State legislatures across the country are considering 11 bills that would prohibit some or all private insurance companies from providing coverage of abortion.

Will you ask your friends to join our fight against this anti-choice, anti-family legislation?

Those who are trying to limit abortion access will not let up, so we can't either! That's why we're counting on you to send an email to your friends and family, share the petition on Facebook, and send this tweet to ask your network to stand up for reproductive rights.

Here's a quick message you can copy and send to rally support:

Hi -

Did you know that state legislatures across the country are considering legislation that would prohibit some or all private insurance companies from providing coverage of abortion - something that nearly all insurance plans currently include?

I signed a petition telling health insurance plans to provide coverage for a full range of pregnancy-related care, including abortion. Will you join me?

Dear Suzanne,
I want to invite you to an exclusive screening of an amazing new HBO film.
It stars two-time Oscar winner Hilary Swank and Brenda Blethyn (and is written by Richard Curtis of "Love Actually").
It tells the story of two moms whose lives are changed forever when malaria strikes - and shows how their seemingly small actions end up doing a world of good.
I'm showing the film next Tuesday in Baltimore - and I'd love for you to be there.
Hope to see you there!
