Ban on sale of dog meat now a law By Joyce Pangco Pañares CONGRESS has passed a law banning the trading in dog meat and promoting the elimination of rabies through mandatory dog immunization.

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed the law, the “Anti-Rabies Act of 2007,” and allocated P100 million to implement it.
“We have become more animal-conscious now,” Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said.

“Dogs are friends. They guard our homes, and we in return take care of them. Some of us even sleep beside our pets,” he said.

Republic Act 8845, passed in 1998, bans the trading in dog meat, but its implementation has been selective as most provinces in the north of the country hide behind “tradition” to justify eating dogs.

In Baguio alone, residents consume about 200 dogs a day, according to animal rights advocate Network for Animals.

Network representative Melchor Alipio said the P5,000 fine imposed in RA 8845 was too small compared with the P55 million that dog traders earned annually.

Section 11 of the new law imposes a P5,000 fine for every dog killed or traded for its meat and a jail term of one year to four years.

“If the violation is committed by an alien, he or she shall be immediately deported after service of sentence without any further proceedings,” the law says.

The law also requires dog owners to have their pets vaccinated regularly against rabies or face a fine of P2,000. Dog owners who let their dogs stray will be fined P500 for each stray.

The law tasks the agriculture department to give free anti-rabies shots in depressed areas, and the health department to stock cheap anti-rabies vaccines for humans.

Stray dogs will be impounded at government dog pounds.

“Impounded dogs not claimed after three days from the dog pound shall be placed for adoption to qualified persons with the assistance of an animal welfare non-government organization,” the law says.

Hi there, You have received a message from colleen: Original Message:-----------------

***PLEASE SIGN AND CROSSPOST***

  • Goal: 100,000
  • Deadline: Ongoing...
The Pet Safety and Protection Act (S. 451 and H.R. 5229) was introduced in the Senate by Senator Akaka and in the House by Representative English.  The Act amends the Animal Welfare Act to prohibit USDA-licensed Class "B" Dealers (who obtain animals from "random sources") from supplying cats and dogs to research facilities. Many of these animals are stolen pets, strays, seized from shelters or obtained falsely through "free to good home" ads.  It is in the greater public interest that Class “B” Dealers not be allowed to sell animals to research facilities.  This will help to ensure the safety of America’s beloved companion animals.  The American people urgently need your help and support.  Please co-sponsor and vote for the passage of the Pet Safety and Protection Act.

Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in
signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a
difference. We are trying to reach 100,000 signatures - please sign here:

Due to old tradition, bad habits, lack of knowlege, funds, and sadly simple disrespect toward life, traveling through Barbados you may or may not notice an extended amount of neglect toward the animals. Cows and many other animals are set out in unbearable, painful heat for days and some even longer with no food no water and no or very little shade. That is.. Cruel. No?

To some, alot of the livestock are just future (poor quality) meat or what they call insurance.? Some livestock and  even dogs have had short ropes on so tight for so long it has grown into their flesh and too many other different horrific accounts regarding different animals
(who some even call pets) too mention here.

Barbados needs more of a push in the right direction.
Education with Animal Cruelty Laws Enforced are needed and with your help maybe we can actually reach a point of making a difference here that is desperately needed for these animals and for the people who care. Please sign this petition so we can really try and make a difference. Thank you so much!

BANFIELD, THE PET HOSPITALR AND MEALS ON WHEELS ASSOCIATION OF AMERICAR
LAUNCH PET FOOD DRIVE

Senior recipients of Meals On Wheels who have Pets may receive Pet food in addition to their meals this holiday season. Banfield, The Pet Hospital, the nation's largest private veterinary practice and Meals On Wheels Association of America (MOWAA) have partnered to launch a
national Pet food drive called "Season of Suppers, a Pet food drive for Pets in
need." The Pet food drive will kick off November 1, 2006 and continue through the end of the year. Banfield and MOWAA hope to collect more  than 1 million pounds of Pet food in Banfield hospitals across the country.

After realizing that, like their owners, the Pets of many seniors who receive Meals On Wheels were also in need of nutritious food in order to stay healthy , MOWAA created We All Love Our Pets (WALOP), a new initiative that seeks to unite Meals On Wheels programs across the country that
are providing Pet food. While many Meals On Wheels programs have their own
Pet food services, the Banfield/MOWAA partnership is the first initiative  of its kind on a national level.

"Pets are the only companions that some of the homebound seniors who  receive
Meals On Wheels have," said Enid A. Borden, CEO of the Meals On Wheels
Association of America. "So ensuring that they also get the meals they  need
to stay healthy is very important. We are delighted to have this  opportunity
to partner with an organization that understands this. By working  together
with Banfield, we hope to do two things -bring attention to this important
issue and to establish WALOP programs in more Meals On Wheels across the country."

Throughout the Season of Suppers campaign, in addition to encouraging
and collecting Pet food donations, Banfield hospitals will also collect monetary
contributions for MOWAA/WALOP, striving to raise $100,000 for the new program.

Additionally, they will help connect people interested in volunteering with their local Meals On Wheels programs.

My First Petition
 Friday, 2:20 AM
hi, i just started a petition to try to get warnings before animal
cruelty stories on the news. one station here in australia repeatedly
covers the subject and even shows mutilated animals. i want the news to
warn people so that they can avoid the story if it will upset them too
much and protect children from seeing it. i saw footage of an animal
being murdered 11 years ago on that channel and it still haunts me. i
don't want children being traumatised as well.

here is the link if you would like to sign:
