Dear Jennieb,And to ALL Care2 Friends Who Wrote on Behalf of Wolves! Please Cross Post and Forward. Thanks for Caring!

Over the past 60 days you've given wolves a fighting chance against the Bush Administration's proposal to strip them of their Endangered Species protection and leave them vulnerable to mass killing.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that more than 200,000 citizens registered their opposition to a dangerous plan that could doom up to one half of the wolves in Greater Yellowstone to a cruel and senseless death.

I'm proud to report that NRDC Action Fund supporters like you generated 137,000 of those 200,000 comments!

Thanks to your support, we also made sure that concerned citizens turned out in force at public hearings across the Northern Rockies to testify for wolf protection. Wolf supporters outnumbered opponents at key hearings in Cheyenne, Wyoming and Boise, Idaho, where the wolf faces fierce hostility from state
officials.

And the outcry we raised was bolstered by more than 250 scientists, who expressed their own opposition to the Bush Administration proposal.

What's next? The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service will review all the comments it has received and will make a decision in about six months on whether or not to maintain protection of the wolf under the Endangered Species Act.

Although the American people have spoken out loud and clear in favor of such protection, it is far from assured. The wolf has powerful enemies in the Bush Administration and state governments.

That's why, in the months ahead, we will be building even more public pressure on the administration . . . bringing the plight of wolves to the attention of the media . . . and making sure that scientific evidence in favor of protection gets a full hearing.

We'll be counting on your support and activism at every step of the way. Thank you again for making your voice heard during this critical comment period for the wolves of Greater Yellowstone.

Sincerely,

Frances Beinecke
President
NRDC Action Fund

Dear Jennie,

For months, officials in the Bush/Cheney Administration have been threatening to eliminate Endangered Species Protections for imperiled gray wolves in the Northern Rockies.

Yesterday, they made good on their threat, announcing a proposal to end federal protections for wolves in Idaho and Wyoming -- two states more concerned with eliminating wolves than managing them.

Tell Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne that you’re outraged by his department’s decision to eliminate Endangered Species Act protections for wolves in states now planning widespread wolf eradication.

In Idaho, Governor C.L. “Butch” Otter has called for the elimination of all but about 100 of the state’s estimated 650 wolves, going so far as to tell a group of anti-wolf protestors that he was eager to bid for a chance to kill a wolf himself.

Last week, the Idaho Fish and Game Commission even set a price for the tag to kill wolves -- $26.50 for in-state residents and $256 dollars for out-of-state people.

Things aren’t looking any better in nearby Wyoming. That state plans to kill as many as two-thirds of its gray wolves if the animals lose federal protection under the Endangered Species Act.

Last week, the state Senate’s Wildlife Committee approved a bill that would allow unlimited killing of wolves in some wilderness areas. Wolves would remain protected within Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks, but could be shot on sight once they wander outside the safety of the national parks.

Take action now! Tell federal officials that you’re outraged by their Northern Rockies wolf proposal.

Handing wolf management responsibilities over to states that are planning wide-spread wolf eradication programs simply makes no sense and does nothing to address the factors that put the wolf on the endangered list to begin with.

The government once allowed our Northern Rocky Mountain wolves to be shot, harassed and poisoned into near extinction. We can’t let that happen again.

Please
take action now.

President Bush Signs the Valle Vidal Protection Act!

Thank you all for your support in achieving this monumental protection!

President Bush signed legislation yesterday (December 12, 2006) prohibiting oil drilling and mining in the Valle Vidal area of New Mexico's Carson National Forest.

Protecting the 102,000-acre Valle Vidal has been a major focus of the New Mexico Wilderness Alliance, New Mexico's political leadership, environmentalists and other outdoors groups over the past year. H.R. 3817 ensures that the Forest Service would keep Valle Vidal off-limits as it develops a new land-use plan.

The Forest Service was considering allowing energy development on about 40,000 acres. The Carson forest plan amendment is scheduled to be completed by early 2007, with any leasing decision made by fall 2008.

Valle Vidal was traded to the Forest Service in 1982 by Pennzoil Co. in exchange for $20 million in tax considerations.  Pennzoil never allowed drilling in the area, and New Mexico politicians including Gov. Bill Richardson (D) fought to protect it, including the area in his roadless rule petition to the Agriculture Department earlier this year.

So get out to the Valle Vidal and celebrate!

Hi there, You have received a message from colleen: Original Message:-----------------

  • Signatures: 986
  • Goal: 100,000
  • Deadline: Ongoing...
The Pet Safety and Protection Act (S. 451 and H.R. 5229) was introduced in the Senate by Senator Akaka and in the House by Representative English.  The Act amends the Animal Welfare Act to prohibit USDA-licensed Class "B" Dealers (who obtain animals from "random sources") from supplying cats and dogs to research facilities. Many of these animals are stolen pets, strays, seized from shelters or obtained falsely through "free to good home" ads.  It is in the greater public interest that Class “B” Dealers not be allowed to sell animals to research facilities.  This will help to ensure the safety of America’s beloved companion animals.  The American people urgently need your help and support.  Please co-sponsor and vote for the passage of the Pet Safety and Protection Act.

Please take a moment to read about this important issue, and join me in
signing the petition. It takes just 30 seconds, but can truly make a
difference. We are trying to reach 100,000 signatures - please sign here:
