The Native Americans had the best cavalry in the world. In spite of what Hollywood portrays, the U.S. Cavalry by itself could never have defeated them. What once-and-for-all-time defeated the Native Americans, was putting in the railroads, and then paying professional hunters {from the trains which crossed the plains, using them as platforms}, to wantonly SHOOT-TO-EXTERMINATE ALL THE BUFFALO, thus cutting off the basis for existence of the tribes. The once-huge herds were down to just a very few hundred individuals, when it was finally decided to "save a few" before they went totally extinct. Huge piles of buffalo just rotted on the plains; the starving Native Americans were herded onto reservations, where they were fed on scanty government rations of canned beef, often poisoned, whether deliberately or just by poor "quality-control". Thus further decimating their numbers. This Genocide was INTENDED TO ELIMINATE the Native Americans as well as the buffalo. Eliminate their entire, "savage, un-Christian" culture. That is why their children were kidnapped and taken to boarding schools and forbidden to speak their Native language -- "to drive the Indian out of them", as was SAID at that time.

What happened to the Native Americans, is a MODEL for what the Corporations are now doing to US, and to the WORLD!
CUTTING OFF OUR ECOLOGICAL BASE OF SUSTENANCE;
and THEN feeding us the CANNED, POISONED CRAP THAT THEY CONTROL!
{And, EXACTLY THE SAME THING they are doing to our EDUCATION. Cutting us off from our Cultural Heritage, so that we will be their OBEDIENT SERVANTS, wherever they want to put us to work -- or in their military if there are no other jobs for us!} {The Native American children were supposed to be trained to be good little domestic servants and "hired help" -- they were taught THOSE SKILLS and no others -- but that didn't really work out too well, they rebelled and became mixed-up crazies and alcoholics instead -- only a few survived the abuse, both physical and psychological, and the forced religious indoctrination.} {Those that were strong and survived, were truly the outstanding, exceptionally hardy people.}

So here we are at a REAL DILEMMA, and it is on Care2 as everywhere else.
We KNOW that poor young men and young women, HAVE to join the Military, often THERE IS NO OTHER CHOICE. Often they need to pay off DEBTS from college; or have no other hope of getting into college {they think}, or any job or any life at all. This is more and more the case with middle-class young people also.
These young people are often IDEALISTIC; they are TOLD they are "fighting for Freedom" and they BELIEVE that! If they didn't have these IDEALS, maybe they wouldn't join the military, in spite of poverty and lack of choices! There is a full-time propaganda machine cranking this out......
So, these young men and young women go abroad to foreign countries THAT HAVE DONE US NO HARM AND ARE NO THREAT TO OUR "FREEDOMS";
and these young persons KILL PEOPLE IN OUR NAME, THINKING {at least at the beginning!} THAT THEY ARE "DOING GOOD" IN THIS WORLD.....KILL PEOPLE, WOUND PEOPLE, MAIM PEOPLE, DESTROY ANIMALS AND PROPERTY, DRIVE WOMEN AND CHILDREN INTO POVERTY AND PROSTITUTION {true in EVERY war!}....

Meanwhile, WE HAVE BEEN BRAINWASHED TOO -- with that fine, all-purpose Slogan "Support Our Troops" -- after all, it isn't these young people's "fault", it isn't THEIR war, they suffer too.... we MUSTN'T DIVEST THEM OF THE "IDEALS" THEY *THINK* THEY ARE FIGHTING AND DYING FOR..... Hey that would make them feel bad, feel we don't love them.....
SO WE DON'T TELL THE TROOPS THE TRUTH. WE COVER UP. WE PUSSYFOOT. WE USE EUPHEMISMS.
And they get so CONFUSED, they GO CRAZY and, all-too-often, COMMIT SUICIDE out of their Moral Confusion and Lack of Understanding.......

SO, WHEN DO WE FESS UP AND START TELLING THE TROOPS THE TRUTH:
THAT KILLING PEOPLE IN AN OVERSEAS WAR FOR THE BENEFIT OF CORPORATIONS,
DOES *NOT* MAKE THEM, quote, "HEROES"......
I personally, think the troops would WELCOME SUCH STRAIGHT TALKING.....
just the Generals wouldn't. AND the Corporate Propaganda Masters.....

Goodbye, GM
by Michael Moore

June 1, 2009

I write this on the morning of the end of the once-mighty General Motors. By high noon, the President of the United States will have made it official: General Motors, as we know it, has been totaled.

As I sit here in GM's birthplace, Flint, Michigan, I am surrounded by friends and family who are filled with anxiety about what will happen to them and to the town. Forty percent of the homes and businesses in the city have been abandoned. Imagine what it would be like if you lived in a city where almost every other house is empty. What would be your state of mind?

It is with sad irony that the company which invented "planned obsolescence" -- the decision to build cars that would fall apart after a few years so that the customer would then have to buy a new one -- has now made itself obsolete. It refused to build automobiles that the public wanted, cars that got great gas mileage, were as safe as they could be, and were exceedingly comfortable to drive. Oh -- and that wouldn't start falling apart after two years.

GM stubbornly fought environmental and safety regulations. Its executives arrogantly ignored the "inferior" Japanese and German cars, cars which would become the gold standard for automobile buyers. And it was hell-bent on punishing its unionized workforce, lopping off thousands of workers for no good reason other than to "improve" the short-term bottom line of the corporation.

Beginning in the 1980s, when GM was posting record profits, it moved countless jobs to Mexico and elsewhere, thus destroying the lives of tens of thousands of hard-working Americans. The glaring stupidity of this policy was that, when they eliminated the income of so many middle class families, who did they think was going to be able to afford to buy their cars? History will record this blunder in the same way it now writes about the French building the Maginot Line or how the Romans cluelessly poisoned their own water system with lethal lead in its pipes.

So here we are at the deathbed of General Motors. The company's body not yet cold, and I find myself filled with -- dare I say it -- joy. It is not the joy of revenge against a corporation that ruined my hometown and brought misery, divorce, alcoholism, homelessness, physical and mental debilitation, and drug addiction to the people I grew up with. Nor do I, obviously, claim any joy in knowing that 21,000 more GM workers will be told that they, too, are without a job.

But you and I and the rest of America now own a car company! I know, I know -- who on earth wants to run a car company? Who among us wants $50 billion of our tax dollars thrown down the rat hole of still trying to save GM? Let's be clear about this: The only way to save GM is to kill GM. Saving our precious industrial infrastructure, though, is another matter and must be a top priority.

If we allow the shutting down and tearing down of our auto plants, we will sorely wish we still had them when we realize that those factories could have built the alternative energy systems we now desperately need. And when we realize that the best way to transport ourselves is on light rail and bullet trains and cleaner buses, how will we do this if we've allowed our industrial capacity and its skilled workforce to disappear?

Thus, as GM is "reorganized" by the federal government and the bankruptcy court, here is the plan I am asking President Obama to implement for the good of the workers, the GM communities, and the nation as a whole. Twenty years ago when I made "Roger & Me," I tried to warn people about what was ahead for General Motors. Had the power structure and the punditocracy listened, maybe much of this could have been avoided. Based on my track record, I request an honest and sincere consideration of the following suggestions:

1. Just as President Roosevelt did after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the President must tell the nation that we are at war and we must immediately convert our auto factories to factories that build mass transit vehicles and alternative energy devices. Within months in Flint in 1942, GM halted all car production and immediately used the assembly lines to build planes, tanks and machine guns. The conversion took no time at all. Everyone pitched in. The fascists were defeated.

We are now in a different kind of war -- a war that we have conducted against the ecosystem and has been conducted by our very own corporate leaders. This current war has two fronts. One is headquartered in Detroit. The products built in the factories of GM, Ford and Chrysler are some of the greatest weapons of mass destruction responsible for global warming and the melting of our polar icecaps. The things we call "cars" may have been fun to drive, but they are like a million daggers into the heart of Mother Nature. To continue to build them would only lead to the ruin of our species and much of the planet.

The other front in this war is being waged by the oil companies against you and me. They are committed to fleecing us whenever they can, and they have been reckless stewards of the finite amount of oil that is located under the surface of the earth. They know they are sucking it bone dry.

And like the lumber tycoons of the early 20th century who didn't give a damn about future generations as they tore down every forest they could get their hands on, these oil barons are not telling the public what they know to be true -- that there are only a few more decades of useable oil on this planet. And as the end days of oil approach us, get ready for some very desperate people willing to kill and be killed just to get their hands on a gallon can of gasoline..

President Obama, now that he has taken control of GM, needs to convert the factories to new and needed uses immediately.

2. Don't put another $30 billion into the coffers of GM to build cars. Instead, use that money to keep the current workforce -- and most of those who have been laid off -- employed so that they can build the new modes of 21st century transportation. Let them start the conversion work now.

3. Announce that we will have bullet trains criss-crossing this country in the next five years. Japan is celebrating the 45th anniversary of its first bullet train this year. Now they have dozens of them. Average speed: 165 mph.. Average time a train is late: under 30 seconds. They have had these high speed trains for nearly five decades -- and we don't even have one! The fact that the technology already exists for us to go from New York to L.A. in 17 hours by train, and that we haven't used it, is criminal. Let's hire the unemployed to build the new high speed lines all over the country. Chicago to Detroit in less than two hours. Miami to DC in under 7 hours. Denver to Dallas in five and a half. This can be done and done now.

4. Initiate a program to put light rail mass transit lines in all our large and medium-sized cities. Build those trains in the GM factories. And hire local people everywhere to install and run this system.

5. For people in rural areas not served by the train lines, have the GM plants produce energy efficient clean buses.

6. For the time being, have some factories build hybrid or all-electric cars (and batteries). It will take a few years for people to get used to the new ways to transport ourselves, so if we're going to have automobiles, let's have kinder, gentler ones. We can be building these next month (do not believe anyone who tells you it will take years to retool the factories -- that simply isn't true).

7. Transform some of the empty GM factories to facilities that build windmills, solar panels and other means of alternate forms of energy. We need tens of millions of solar panels right now. And there is an eager and skilled workforce who can build them.

8. Provide tax incentives for those who travel by hybrid car or bus or train. Also, credits for those who convert their home to alternative energy.

9. To help pay for this, impose a two-dollar tax on every gallon of gasoline. This will get people to switch to more energy saving cars or to use the new rail lines and rail cars the former autoworkers have built for them.

Well, that's a start. Please, please, please don't save GM so that a smaller version of it will simply do nothing more than build Chevys or Cadillacs. This is not a long-term solution. Don't throw bad money into a company whose tailpipe is malfunctioning, causing a strange odor to fill the car.

100 years ago this year, the founders of General Motors convinced the world to give up their horses and saddles and buggy whips to try a new form of transportation. Now it is time for us to say goodbye to the internal combustion engine. It seemed to serve us well for so long. We enjoyed the car hops at the A&W. We made out in the front -- and the back -- seat. We watched movies on large outdoor screens, went to the races at NASCAR tracks across the country, and saw the Pacific Ocean for the first time through the window down Hwy. 1. And now it's over. It's a new day and a new century. The President -- and the UAW -- must seize this moment and create a big batch of lemonade from this very sour and sad lemon.

Yesterday, the last surviving person from the Titanic disaster passed away. She escaped certain death that night and went on to live another 97 years.

So can we survive our own Titanic in all the Flint Michigans of this country. 60% of GM is ours. I think we can do a better job.

Yours,
Michael Moore

The mountain caribou needs more habitat than British Columbia's government is currently prepared to provide. And, without proper protection, one of the most endangered mammals in North America could disappear.

Industrial logging and out-of-control motorized recreation are not only destroying caribou habitat, but also diminishing opportunities for nature lovers and recreation enthusiasts.

Yet, the British Columbia government has prepared a mountain caribou recovery plan that proposes less habitat protection than the government's mountain caribou science team believes would be necessary to fully recover the herds.

Canadian pressure is critical for the recovery of this endangered species. Please tell the BC government that habitat protection is the cornerstone of an effective mountain caribou recovery plan. The comment period ends February 28, 2007. Send your comment TODAY!
Protect Mountain Caribou Habitat
I am concerned about the urgent situation for endangered mountain caribou. For two years your mountain caribou science panel met to develop options for mountain caribou recovery. These scientists all agreed that protecting habitat is critical to the long-term survival of the species. I write to urge you to protect ALL mountain caribou habitat. I believe that BC has a responsibility to the world to conserve this wildlife heritage.

You have promised to "lead the world in sustainable environmental management." In the two years that have passed since you created the Species At Risk Coordination Office, mountain caribou have continued to decline at a rate of 4.5% a year, according to your scientists. Meanwhile logging and motorized recreation have continued in mountain caribou habitat. The eyes of the world are on BC as host of the 2010 Olympic games. Since mountain caribou are found nowhere else in the world, I feel you have a global responsibility to protect them.

BC has the opportunity to demonstrate its environmental leadership by protecting mountain caribou and the globally unique ecosystem -- the Inland Temperate Rainforest — that these animals rely on. Please assure me that you will take immediate action to protect all the mountain caribou habitat identified by the Mountain Caribou Science Team.

My comment on the petition:

Mountain Caribou cannot breed and raise their young in areas disturbed by noisy, polluting snowmobiles. When a population of animals gets TOO SMALL, those left inbreed and become genetically weak and DISAPPEAR. Which would you prefer: a world with NO MORE MOUNTAIN CARIBOU in it; or a world with NO MORE SNOWMOBILES??? I opt for a world that eliminates snowmobiles, before I want to live in a world with no more Mountain Caribou, and other species endangered by careless recreational snowmobiling.  BMT

One of BC's most threatened species - can it survive more habitat loss?

Less than 2,000 mountain caribou exist in the world, 98% of which live in British Columbia. Found in both the upper Goat River and the Bugaboo Rainforest, mountain caribou are heavily reliant upon this moist old-growth ecosystem for raising their young, protecting themselves from predators and foraging for food.

In particular, mountain caribou depend on arboreal lichens as a critical winter food source. Because lichens grow very slowly, only very old forests provide the abundant lichens needed to nourish caribou over harsh winter months.

According to a 1999 BC Wildlife Branch report, “Because caribou are so well-suited to the ecological conditions in the inland rainforest…they can be considered a flagship species of this area. No other large animal has a distribution so closely tied to this region.”

The ongoing destruction of this rare ecosystem through logging, hydro and other development has seen the mountain caribou range shrink by 60%. Sadly, the younger forests which emerge after logging upset the natural balance by bringing deer and moose into the area, which in turn brings in predators such as wolves and cougars.

Government 2002 census results show serious declines in BC’s 13 mountain caribou herds. Of great concern is the fact that several mountain caribou herds are now at critically low levels. The population of some herds has declined by more than 50% between 1994 and 2001. These herds are in imminent danger of disappearing from the landscape altogether.

As an indicator species the mountain caribou is a canary in the coalmine and it is telling us that the ecosystem in which it lives is being destroyed and fragmented to such an extent that it can no longer support a species that has depended on it for thousands of years.

An appeal to people outside the United States to break US imperial power

BY Stan Goff

This series of suggestions is written because my country is on a path that will first destroy other societies — upon which we depend — and the biospheric basis of life itself; and this means eventually our own society. Our society now — an imperial society — is deeply alienated, desperately unhappy, and thoroughly indoctrinated into the acquisitive individualism that creates that alienation and unhappiness. We continue down this path because the weight of the system gives it such enormous inertia. We need you to do these things, not just to ensure your own futures… but for our own good.

The United States now exists as a parasite upon the rest of the world. In this system, this political entity called the United States of America is not only a parasite, but a parasite that is destroying its own host. There is only one outcome in the end for such a relationship; we will all perish together. With the help of the people of the world — and I will outline ten ways you can help us — we can all escape this fate. Each of us — with the destruction of US imperial power — will be in a better position to work for a sustainable and indpendent future for ourselves, our children, and our grandchildren.

(1) If there is a US military base in your country, begin a concerted campaign to get rid of it. These bases are exercises of imperial power against your own sovereignty. They are creating base-economies of crime, corruption, and prostitution. They are environmental disasters. Wage a sharp political struggle to make them untenable.

(2) If there are US companies, be they factories, financial offices, or retail outlets, in your country, organize sustained boycotts of them.

(3) If you live in a country that owes an external debt to the US or the US-controlled International Monetary Fund, begin a fight to either default on that debt outright, or secure low-interest or no-interest loans from other countries to pay down the principle. Your nations’ debt is your peoples’ slavery.

(4) Boycott any American agricultural products being dumped on your national markets; and wage a political fight to stop them coming in. US industrial agricultural corporations are heavily-subsidized and predatory monstrosities that destroy the environment and are used as a weapon to destroy your local, traditional agriculture. Ending agriculture for export and supporting your own subsistence and local market agriculture is necessary to break your dependency upon and subjugation to the United States. Fight for your nations’ land; and do not let it become an export platform for dollar-crops in the US market.

(5) Boycott American cultural products. They are propaganda aimed at turning your children into mindless consumers and your nations into obedient colonies.

(6) Make these political issues at home. Fight politicians who are called “Pro-American,” This means they are stooges for US-based trans-national corporations or for the US state.

(7) Fight to nationalize your most valuable natural resources; and support politicians who will abrogate agreements that allow US finance capital unlimited access to your national markets.

(8) Try to close down any projects that are run out of the US Embassy by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). These projects are designed to drain talented local people away from national independence movements, and the USAID works closely with the Central Intelligence Agency.

(9) Expose and resist any political activity by the National Endowment for Democracy (NED), also operating in concert with the US Embassy. This is a front organization for the purpose of engineering elections outcomes in your nation that are seen as favorable to US transnational corporations and the US state.

(10) Mount massive political efforts directed at US Embassies everywhere that oppose the US occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, and demand not only withdrawal, but that no US bases be left behind.

NOTE: I have not called for violence in any of these suggestions. These are generic recommendations.

On Canada's Pacific coast, between the northern tip of Vancouver Island and the Alaska border, lies one of the earth's largest remaining tracts of temperate rainforest: the 19-million-acre Great Bear Rainforest. Great Bear's amazingly diverse ecosystem is home to salmon, sea lions, eagles, wolves and bears, including the rare white Spirit Bear. It boasts gorgeous lakes and magnificent waterfalls, as well as giant cedars, Sitka spruce, western hemlock and balsam. For years, heavy logging has cut holes in its beauty and cast doubt on its future.

In February 2006, the Great Bear Rainforest Agreement was announced to the world by B.C. Premier Gordon Campbell. The agreement had two cornerstones: a protected areas package and a commitment to bold new logging practices, known as Ecosystem-based Management. Under the deal, 4.4 million acres (1.8 million hectares)—nearly twice as large as Yellowstone National Park—is off limits to loggers and largely closed to mining exploration.

This agreement is now at risk and provisions are not being met, making the future of the Great Bear Rainforest far from being secure.  Currently, much of the Great Bear Rainforest is still subject to clearcutting, sport hunting, fish farming and mining.  Increased protection will be required on the central and north coast if biodiversity is to be safeguarded in this globally significant region.

As for the kermode bear,  these rare and beautiful bears are still afforded no legal protection from trophy hunters and face extinction.  A number of influential conservation groups are however actively working in partnership with First Nations groups to pursue legislation to protect Spirit Bears and their habitat. It is to be hoped that this popular movement will receive government backing so that future generations may still be lucky enough to glimpse this rare and elusive spirit of the Great Bear Rainforest.

Please urge Premier Campbell to ensure the preservation of the magnificent fauna, including the rare white Spirit Bear and this gorgeous boreal rainforest habitat  by supporting the Great Bear Rainforest campaign.

For More Information please visit the Spirit  Bear Youth Coalition website at www.spiritbearyouth.org. Although there is no affiliation between this petition and  The Spirit Bear Youth Coalition, their website provides a lot of great information.
