KDC Solar and North Jersey Media Group Cut Ribbon on Large Solar Facility
by Staff Writers
Bedminster NJ (SPX) May 10, 2013

The solar operation will cover more than 60 percent of the power needs at North Jersey Media Group's printing plant.

KDC Solar LLC, headquartered in Bedminster, New Jersey, through its wholly owned subsidiary, KDC Solar NJMG, has commenced commercial operations at North Jersey Media Group's (NJMG) printing facility in Rockaway, New Jersey.

The solar project is the largest PV solar system (4.96 megawatts) at any printing facility in the State of New Jersey. The new system, which will generate approximately 6.2 million kilowatt hours of solar electricity per year, will allow North Jersey Media Group's facility to receive approximately 60% of its annual electric needs from clean renewable solar energy and substantially reduce its carbon footprint.

This is the equivalent of 700 homes being supplied with all their electricity for the year. In addition, there are discussions underway to add additional solar capacity when a new roof is installed on a portion of the facility.

A ribbon cutting ceremony marking the commencement of commercial operations was held at NJMG's facility on May 6th. Among the local dignitaries in attendance were Don Reddin, Rockaway Township Council Member, Dave Washington, Rockaway Township Council Member, Gregory Poff, Rockaway Township Business Administrator, Vincent Brennan, Rockaway Township Police Captain and Planning Board Member, Jim Lutz, Rockaway Township Engineer and Craig Babcock, Rockaway Fire Marshall.

KDC Solar signed an engineering and construction contract for the installation of the facility with Samsung C and T. J. Fletcher Creamer and Son, a fifth-generation contractor headquartered in Hackensack, New Jersey, was the general contractor.

The solar facility uses over 20,400 photovoltaic panels, 10 SMA America 500 kilowatt inverters and is ground mounted, roof mounted and on car ports across 50 acres of land.

"North Jersey Media Group is pleased and proud to have served as the host and electric off-taker of this solar project," said Stephen Borg, President of NJMG.

"This use of clean energy helps us continue our environmental stewardship as well as reduce costs. KDC Solar is a wonderful partner and I strongly recommend them to those considering similar projects," he said.

"We are very pleased to have worked with North Jersey Media Group and, in particular, the Borg family to bring this concept to reality. This facility is the largest PV solar facility at any printing facility in the State of New Jersey and will supply clean, lower cost, long-term solar energy to North Jersey Media Group for many years," said Hal Kamine, KDC Solar's Chief Executive Officer.

"This project is another example of a successful 'behind-the-meter' clean solar electric system for business/government and institutions, which in turn create or preserve both short and long-term jobs for the state."

Reposted from the Sierra Club:

mayor villaraigosaAngelenos cheered this week when Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa announced his intention to sign two agreements that will make the city coal-free no later than 2025.

This comes at a moment in our campaign when massive rallies across the U.S. in February called on President Obama to take immediate administrative action to tackle the threat of extreme climate change devastation.

Here in L.A., 2,000 Angelenos showed up in front of City Hall to demand national action on climate change last month. The good news this week is that Angelenos’ demand for clean energy is driving significant progress in our own backyard.

L.A. gets nearly 40 percent of its power from two aging out-of-state coal plants — the Navajo Generating Station (NG in Arizona and the Intermountain Power Project (IPP) in Utah. These aging plants have become a financial liability for Angelenos as a result of the necessary and required retrofits at both of the several-decades-old power plants.

The prospect of Los Angeles being poised to sign agreements to get off of coal represents a pivotal moment. This would mark a major transformation for our city and would be the result of ordinary Angelenos coming together to demand change in the energy choices we make. In 21st-century Los Angeles, it has become simply unacceptable for nearly 40 percent of our city’s energy supply to continue to come from aging, out-of-state, polluting coal-fired power plants.

When Mayor Villaraigosa took office in 2005, the city got nearly half its power from coal and a measly three percent from clean energy. What a difference eight years make. Los Angeles was the first city in the state to hit 20 percent clean energy. It recently launched the largest urban rooftop solar program in the nation, and it has reimagined its energy-efficiency program to create good careers while saving more energy. In the past year alone, L.A. has locked in enough clean energy commitments to power 330,000 homes with solar (that’s basically the equivalent of Cleveland or Minneapolis).

The coal transition is as much an economic transition as it is an environmental one, and it represents a victory for all Angelenos. The city’s new CLEAN LA Solar program (a solar buy-back or “feed-in-tariff&rdquo — the largest city-wide program of its kind in the nation — promises to create 4,500 jobs and nearly $500 million in economic development for the city. Toronto-based Solar Provider, for example, has plans to hire 30 Angelenos and to invest $50 million in Los Angeles as a result of the new program.

The Energy Bill is moving!

More than 2.5 million new, green jobs and energy independence are at stake.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown has a plan to make it happen.

Tell your senators to support Sen. Brown's IMPACT Act of 2009!

Dear Alice Diane,

For decades, we have watched American manufacturing jobs shipped overseas. Now, as we face our highest unemployment rate in 25 years, the consequences of our complacency are crystal clear.

An America that can't manufacture its own goods will be a weak America. And with the clean-energy economy poised to grow exponentially, it's more important than ever to keep new jobs here.

Last Wednesday, Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio stepped up with a brand new proposal that lays the groundwork for the creation of more than 2.5 million new, green jobs. This plan provides an ironclad economic motivation for hesitant lawmakers from hard-hit states to support the Energy Bill.

The Energy Bill is moving – we need to act quickly. Tell your senators to support Sen. Brown's "Investments for Manufacturing Progress and Clean Technology (IMPACT) Act."

I was in DC last Wednesday with Apollo Alliance supporters to help build momentum for this bill – it's that important. We've calculated that it would create at least 680,000 new direct manufacturing jobs and nearly 2 million jobs outside the sector.

That means more than 2.5 million Americans put to work creating clean energy technologies. The bill would:

  • Invest in loans to small- and mid-sized businesses to retool, establish, or expand clean energy manufacturing capabilities, and
  • Increase funding to help manufacturers break into clean energy markets and adopt innovative, energy-efficient technologies.

Will you stand with Apollo and Sen. Brown? Urge your senators to support businesses, workers, AND the environment by supporting the "Investments for Manufacturing Progress and Clean Technology Act."

With your help, we can generate the resources – and the political will – to create green jobs in an industry that offers a more sustainable solution for our environment, our economy, and American workers.

Thank you for taking action.

Sincerely,

Phil Angelides
Chairman
The Apollo Alliance

Too many members of Congress are only too happy to say that this global warming bill does enough - and pretend it doesn't undermine the EPA. We're going to need all the help we can get to get this insidious provision out of the global warming bill; can you help by getting some friends involved? You can just forward the sample letter below.

Spreading the word is critical, but please only pass this message along to those who know you -- spam hurts our campaign.

Thanks for all you do.

--The CREDO Action Team

Here's a sample message to send to your friends:

Subject: Remove the Trojan Horse from Global Warming Legislation

Your representative is about to vote on legislation designed to stop global warming. Unfortunately, members of the House who answer to the worst polluters have succeeded in including a Trojan Horse at the heart of the legislation - a prohibition on Obama's EPA being able to use the Clean Air Act to take additional action on CO2.

This little known, almost secret provision actually guarantees that the United States will fall short of doing what the scientists tell us must happen - a reduction of 80% of CO2 emissions from their 1990 level.

Mr. Obama ran for president on a very strong global warming platform which achieved the 80% reduction, launched a cap and trade market without giving away free permits to polluters, and set strong standards for boosting clean renewable energy. Special interests are warping his pledge almost beyond recognition.

But the worst and most important compromise - and the one most secret and hidden from view - is the crippling of EPA's powers. This is precisely what Newt Gingrich and the Republican-controlled House of the 1990s did to President Clinton's EPA from 1995 on. They simply prohibited EPA from enforcing many laws. We cannot let the House strip President Obama of his most powerful tool to stop global warming.

> I just signed a petition to tell my representative to stand up for President Obama's best weapon to fight global warming - the EPA. I hope you will, too. Please have a look and take action.

Earthjustice - Tell EPA to Act Now on Climate Change!

Tell EPA to Act Now on Climate Change

Take action today! Photo of trucks.
Motor vehicles in the U.S. contribute 4% of climate change emissions.
Take Action Today!

Take Action Today!

Dear Alice Diane,

After years of delay and denial from past administrations, the Environmental Protection Agency is finally taking steps to declare that greenhouse gas emissions threaten the public's health and welfare.

The time has come for this action, and we need to encourage the EPA to move swiftly on it.

The EPA is proposing two historic findings under the Clean Air Act: that greenhouse gases, including carbon dioxide, endanger public health, and that emissions from motor vehicles contribute to climate change. This is a critical first step for the EPA to take in order to tackle climate change pollution.

The findings follow a decision by the Supreme Court which said the EPA has authority to regulate pollutants responsible for global warming under the Clean Air Act. Earthjustice argued the case at the appellate level in 2005.

While the EPA's current proposal is a necessary first step, there are additional steps the EPA can take, such as setting actual standards to regulate greenhouse gases, particularly from motor vehicles in the U.S., which contribute 4 percent of climate change emissions, and from other mobile sources such as ships and airplanes, which contribute another 4 percent.

We know that the EPA is hearing from polluters in the fossil fuel industry who want to keep the status quo, stop the EPA from moving forward, and protect their record-breaking profits. We can't let them go unchallenged.

Please join with people across the nation and tell EPA to formally embrace these findings, and then act without delay to regulate greenhouse gas polluters.

To comment, go to our action alert page and see the sample letter to EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson. It will help you express your support for prompt moves by the EPA.

Because the earth needs a good lawyer

P.S. Every voice counts! Please tell your family and friends to submit a comment to the EPA on greenhouse gas regulation.

Dear Alice,

Don't let Big Oil derail clean energy legislation.

Email your Representative Today!

Last month, the House Energy & Commerce Committee took a huge step towards jumpstarting our economy with clean energy jobs when they passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACENow, this legislation will be voted on as soon as next week in the House.

Passing this legislation will bring us closer than ever to truly putting us on a path to a clean energy future.  But, Big Oil is doing everything in their power to derail this legislation. Will you contact your Member of Congress to insist that this bill is strengthened and passed?

Click here to ask your Representative to strengthen and pass the ACES bill today.

This legislation will help both our economy and our planet by helping to create millions of jobs, reducing our dependence on oil, and cutting global warming pollution.  To make sure the bill creates even more clean energy jobs, we would also like to see improvements in the bill that strengthen requirements and increase investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as preserve the Obama administration's ability to regulate dangerous pollutants.

But, Big Oil and their cohorts in Congress are stopping at nothing to keep us addicted to dirty energy.  They are flooding the halls of Congress with misinformation, and we must counter their attacks.

Please ask your Member of Congress to strengthen and pass this critical legislation.

Passing ACES legislation would jumpstart a clean energy economy by:

  • Supporting the development of new clean energy sources, such as wind, solar and geothermal, by requiring utilities to generate at least 20% of their electricity from renewable resources, with a portion met through efficiency by 2020;
  • Dramatically boosting energy efficiency in building, appliances, and homes, saving over $25 billion per year by 2030; and
  • Reducing global warming pollution by at least 17% by 2020 and 83% by 2050.

Send a message to your representative today urging him or her to defend, strengthen and pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454).

We have a narrow window of time to move this legislation..  Please don't wait – email your Representative today.

Thank you for all that you do,

Sincerely,

Gene Karpinski

Hi Alice,

Send a letter to the editor today

A letter to your local editor can spread the word for a stronger clean energy bill:

Send your letter online now!

Our efforts to strengthen the clean energy bill are raising eyebrows on Capitol Hill. Just last week, climate activists like you sent more than 8,000 faxes to congressional offices in Washington.

But this is no time to let up: we have to keep pushing for a stronger bill!

Here's another way to keep pushing: send a letter to your local newspaper editors. Your representatives read the editorial pages of your hometown paper--and they pay attention to what their constituents have to say.

Your published letter can send them a strong message: passing a strong clean energy bill can transform our economy, create millions of jobs, and begin to solve the climate crisis. Send a letter to your local newspaper editor today:

http://www.1sky.org/letter

It's easy to get started: Simply enter your zip code to select one of your local newspapers. You can customize your message or use our talking points to get started. Then, encourage your friends, family, and neighbors to send their own letters!

Be sure to tell your local editors that this bill needs to be stronger with three changes:

  1. Ensure More Clean Energy for America: By increasing the renewable energy and energy efficiency standards.
  2. Hold Polluters Accountable: By restoring authority to the EPA to mandate cleaner technology for power plants.
  3. Create More Clean Energy Jobs for America: Limit giveaways to polluting industries and instead bolster green job development and protection of vulnerable communities.

You can also follow-up your letter with a call to your local paper and tell them about your letter. Send a letter to your local paper today:

http://www.1sky.org/letter

Thanks again for all you're doing to pass a strong clean energy bill this year!

Liz Butler
Deputy Campaign Director, 1Sky

P.S.: After you send your letter, learn about other ways you can get louder for a stronger clean energy bill.
