Every day the dairy crisis in the U.S. becomes more and more desperate. Dairy farmers across the country are losing their farms and their livelihoods. That's why we're working with Farm Aid to urge Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack to raise the price of milk paid to farmers to cover their cost of production. Will you ask Secretary Vilsack to protect our dairy farmers?
Dairy farmers are facing increased costs of production but are not seeing any increase in the price they are being paid. To make things worse, the milk pricing formulas are vulnerable to manipulation by large dairy companies.
Right now, on average, farmers are being paid less than half what it costs them to produce their milk. Clearly this isn't sustainable. The Department of Agriculture must ensure that dairy farmers receive a fair price for their milk.
If things don't change quickly, we risk losing thousands of dairy farmers. If that happens, huge areas of the United States may be left without any local dairy farms at all.
