Just a quick update on the vote for the war supplemental funding bill.

There was rumor that the House might vote today but since the leadership still does not have the votes, the vote has not been scheduled.
According to Democrats.com which is keeping a running head count on likely votes:

"All 178 House Republicans plan to vote against the $100 billion Iraq/AfPak War Supplemental to protest $5 billion for the International Monetary Fund. That means 39 Democratic opponents could defeat the bill. 36 Democrats promised to vote no, so we only need 3 more."

Only three more votes and the war funding bill can be stopped.

Please call your representative in the Congress and urge them to vote "no" on the war supplemental.  Call  202-22....

Please take action now.  Defeat of the war funding bill would be a tremendous victory for the anti-war movement and will push the Congress and White House to reconsider their plans and let them know how weak support for the war is in Congress and among the people.

Dear Alice,

Don't let Big Oil derail clean energy legislation.

Email your Representative Today!

Last month, the House Energy & Commerce Committee took a huge step towards jumpstarting our economy with clean energy jobs when they passed the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (ACENow, this legislation will be voted on as soon as next week in the House.

Passing this legislation will bring us closer than ever to truly putting us on a path to a clean energy future.  But, Big Oil is doing everything in their power to derail this legislation. Will you contact your Member of Congress to insist that this bill is strengthened and passed?

Click here to ask your Representative to strengthen and pass the ACES bill today.

This legislation will help both our economy and our planet by helping to create millions of jobs, reducing our dependence on oil, and cutting global warming pollution.  To make sure the bill creates even more clean energy jobs, we would also like to see improvements in the bill that strengthen requirements and increase investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency, as well as preserve the Obama administration's ability to regulate dangerous pollutants.

But, Big Oil and their cohorts in Congress are stopping at nothing to keep us addicted to dirty energy.  They are flooding the halls of Congress with misinformation, and we must counter their attacks.

Please ask your Member of Congress to strengthen and pass this critical legislation.

Passing ACES legislation would jumpstart a clean energy economy by:

  • Supporting the development of new clean energy sources, such as wind, solar and geothermal, by requiring utilities to generate at least 20% of their electricity from renewable resources, with a portion met through efficiency by 2020;
  • Dramatically boosting energy efficiency in building, appliances, and homes, saving over $25 billion per year by 2030; and
  • Reducing global warming pollution by at least 17% by 2020 and 83% by 2050.

Send a message to your representative today urging him or her to defend, strengthen and pass the American Clean Energy and Security Act (HR 2454).

We have a narrow window of time to move this legislation..  Please don't wait – email your Representative today.

Thank you for all that you do,

Sincerely,

Gene Karpinski

Dear Alice Diane,

Sincerely,

Kevin Zeese
Executive Director

The pressure is on. It will take 40 Democrats to vote against war funding to defeat the supplemental for Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan. Are there 40 anti-war Democrats willing to stop the wars by stopping the funding?

Why only 40 Democrats? The Republicans plan to vote against the war funding bill because it includes $108 billion in funding for the International Monetary Fund. The Republicans have 178 votes in the House of Representatives. A majority in the House is 218 votes. Therefore in order to stop war funding, all it will take is 40 Democrats to vote against war funding.

On May 14, 2009, 51 Democrats voted against the supplemental funding bill for the war. In addition, there were four Democrats absent for the vote including some additional Democrats opposed to war funding.

Pressure is mounting on the anti-war Democrats from party leadership. They have delayed the vote to pressure Democrats opposed to war because war funding is more fragile than it looks. Democratic leaders do not want to see a vote against war funding. To counter the influence of party leadership, it is urgent that you take action to urge Democrats to vote "no" on war funding. This will give anti-war Democrats greater power in the legislative process.

You can send a letter to your elected Member of Congress by clicking here.

You can also call your Member of Congress at  20.... This will get you to the congressional switchboard where you can ask for your representative.

Please help stop $96.7 million in more war funding by writing and calling your Member of Congress today. To continue to fund the wars and the IMF the United States will borrow $200 billion and then give it to the IMF and the wars. This puts the U.S. further in debt, mainly to China, and leaves a heavy burden on our children. All this is at a time of economic collapse and a deep recession.

The cost of the war is reason enough to vote against the funding. In addition, the U.S. is doing more harm than good in these wars. The wars undermine our national security by making us new enemies each time another civilian is killed. And, despite promises from the administration, there is no exit plan for Afghanistan nor have we seen any troops withdrawn from Iraq. We need to stop funding of endless wars.

Please take action today. The vote is likely to occur this week. So contact your representative now. Call ( 202-224-3121 ) and write your elected representatives and tell them to vote "no" on further war funding.
