the Transplant is Happening!
I was finally approved to donate my kidney to my husband Bob and the surgery is scheduled (tentatively) for October 18th at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

I would like to THANK EVERYONE who contributed to our fundraiser for RESEARCH.  Thanks to all who walked with us and support the research.  With your help, it's possible that our two youngest sons may not have to face this incurable disease without options for a cure.  Maybe, working together with the fabulous researchers, we can find a cure!  I am eternally hopeful for that. Again,
THANK YOU!!!  Our team raised nearly $11,000.  Wow!

  In a few weeks (2-8?) I will be the donor for my husband, Bob. My husband is the eternally happy guy in the middle of the picture!  His kidney function is periously low (now less than 13%)in addition to a brain aneuryism which is not an uncommon side effect of this disease. It is with great joy that I can tell you I was found to be a perfect match!  After much poking, prodding, and intense scrutiny at Mayo clinic, they have "off the record, unofficially, "you didn't hear it from me..." given me the thumbs up.  Wish us luck and please support our cause. Donations for the Walk for PKD go to the PKD foundation for research and not to our family.  I don't want anyone to think this is a personal request.  This disease affects many others and we must find a cure so others don't have to suffer this illness without hope.   Any donations are tax deductible.  If you have any questions, please ask.  You may visit the official PKD website at:  www.PKDCure.org

Going to Mayo Clinic

Hi Friends,
Now that my son is getting settled into the facility, I am letting you all know that I am still off lately more than I am on this website.  I miss you all and miss being out here more.
This week and next,  I will be at  Mayo Clinic (it's in my home state of Minnesota), where I will undergo a battery of tests to determine my ability to successfully donate one of my kidney's to my husband who has Polycystic Kidney Disease.  His health has been failing rapidly and the doctors are ready to move forward.  It has already been determined that I am an excellent blood and tissue match!!! I hope you all are enjoying the remaining remnants of summer and I do miss you.  All the best, Love, Kate in Minneapolis

Saving Jason

Yesterday was another landmark day...my oldest son, Jason was committed again, involuntarily,again, to a psychiatric facility.  Jason has been fighting against paranoid schizophrenia.  It is an absolutely devastating illness for him, for his family, and for the community. 
When Jason was a baby he hated being restrained.  That dislike has never abated so having him committed is painful.  Knowing he is out alone in the world is more painful.  He prefers to wander and sleep outside.  He gives his food and material possessions away to others he deems more needy.  He disappears without a trace only to call me from various locations, wondering where he is, how he got there, and could I please get him back home.  These places include, Washington, D.C., Detroit, Michigan; Chicago, Illinois, and Tel Aviv, Israel.  Yes, Israel!!!
This committment is one in a line of committments. We are in a vicious circle because society does not have a middle ground.  People, such as my son, with these conditions are considered "throw aways".  It is a painful situation for all of us.  I don't have the answers.  I just keep trying because as long as he is alive, there is hope.  My struggle now is, I am losing hope with each time he decompensates.  He is getting farther away from me and sometimes, I know, he doesn't realize how much he is loved.  Especially now, because he is right now, at this moment, being locked up again.  
I can say, that I am exceedingly grateful that his care and concern of others has not been ripped from him by this illness.  I just wish he exhibited some care and concern for himself.  He doesn't.

Toddlers Bodies Found in Minnesota

Tristan and Avery, the two little brothers from Northern Minnesota who were missing since November from their home, have been found dead.  Their tiny bodies were discovered encased in the ice of a lake about 1/2 mile from their home.
At this time, it is unknown if this is a tragic accident or if someone else was involved but please give your thoughts and prayers to their families.
These two boys are Native American and it's imperative that this case gets the attention it deserves.

CSG Justice Center and NIC Release New Resource to Promote
Corrections/Mental Health Collaboration

The Council of State Governments Justice Center (Justice Center) and National Institute of Corrections (NIC) announced the release of case studies on corrections/mental health initiatives in Kansas and Orange County, Florida. This resource is available for corrections administrators, mental health officials, and others interested in improving the response to people with mental illnesses transitioning from jail or prison to the community.
In 2004, Kansas and Orange County, Florida were identified as jurisdictions where lessons learned about collaboration between the corrections and mental health systems could be of value to other communities.

"Leaders of state and local government will appreciate what the extraordinary collaboration between corrections administrators and mental health officials in Kansas and Orlando has yielded," said NIC Director Morris Thigpen. "The challenges these leaders have faced are familiar to all counties and states whose jails and prisons are housing a growing number of people with mental illnesses."

In Kansas, nearly 20 percent of the prison population had significant mental health needs; people with mental illnesses were 67 percent more likely than others to be reincarcerated within six months of their release. The Kansas case study describes how leaders of the Departments of Corrections and Social and Rehabilitation Services collaborated to jointly fund a specialized transition planning program, establish partnerships between the Department of Corrections and specific community mental health service providers, improve data sharing between agencies, and develop and manage specialized mental health parole caseloads.

In Orange County, a number of mental illness- and substance abuse-related deaths at the jail prompted sustained media coverage and urgent calls for reform. The Orange County case study describes how these incidents led to the formation of a Jail Oversight Commission, the construction of a central receiving center for individuals with mental illnesses and/or substance use disorders who would normally be taken to jail or local emergency rooms, specialized law enforcement response teams, a pre-trial services program, and a post-booking treatment diversion program.

"The frank discussions in these documents about the significant obstacles that leaders in Kansas and Orange County continue to face provide valuable lessons for the field," said Dr. James Reinhard, Commissioner of the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services and Justice Center charter group member. "The case studies show the importance of developing meaningful collaborations with people who have a shared vision for successfully increasing public safety and improving outcomes for people with mental illnesses."

The Council of State Governments Justice Center, coordinator of the Criminal Justice/Mental Health Consensus Project, is a national nonprofit organization that serves policymakers at the local, state, and federal levels from all branches of government. It provides practical, nonpartisan advice and consensus-driven strategies, informed by available evidence, to increase public safety and strengthen communities.
