Humane Society International secured a historic decision from the Australian Federal Court Tuesday which could save hundreds of whales from the Japanese harpoon.
The Federal Court has confirmed that the Japanese whaling company Kyodo Senpaku Kaisha, Ltd. is in breach of Australian law when it kills hundreds of whales in the Australian Whale Sanctuary and has ordered that the hunt be stopped.
This is the first time the Japanese whalers have been taken to court and the court's decision confirms that the hunt is illegal. HSI Australia will serve the order that the hunt be stopped at the company's headquarters in Tokyo right away and we call on them to abandon the hunt immediately.
Join us in calling on the Rudd government to live up to their pre-election commitment to enforce the Federal Court injunction against the whalers immediately so that no more whales are killed in the Australian Whale Sanctuary this summer. Sign the petition to Prime Minister Rudd now!

Target:
Australian Government
Whale Call, an Australian based NGO, whale conservation and research organization, in its bid to have a halt placed against the illegal and inhumane slaughter of threatened and endangered species of whales, including 50 endangered humpbacks, an act which is under international condemnation, puts it to the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, and the Federal Minister for the Environment, Malcolm Turnbull, what their intentions are to saving these whales, and to make a pledge, to protect them in their feeding grounds in Australian Territorial waters, which the Japanese Government's 'JARPA 2 whale research program' plans to slaughter over 1,000 whales this year.

Not only is this an illegal and inhumane act, but you cannot eat whale, or even dolphin meat for that matter. It is very poisonous, being highly toxic with methylmercury, PCB's, cadmium, and dioxins, and is unsafe for human consumption, especially pregnant women and young school children who are being fed whale, and dolphin meat, in Japan's school canteens. Also their pets health is at risk. Dog biscuits are made from whale meat and cat food from dolphin meat. The dangerous health problems caused from eating whale, or dolphin meat, is called Minamata Disease, and goes straight to the fetus of a pregnant women upon consuming whale meat. Another very good reason for Japan, and other whaling nations, to put a halt to their whaling programs.

Whale Call would appreciate your caring participation in signing this very important petiton so it can be presented to the Australian Government.

Warning; the accompanying film is very graphic and children should ask their parents to supervise any viewing.

“every drop of rain that falls ends up in the mouths of whales – it is up to humans to control what substances enter that raindrop during its journey to the ocean”

Japan Dolphin Day: Abolish the Slaughter
Attend one of IDA's protests on September 20th

Every year from October through March in small towns along the
Japanese coast, fishermen kill about 20,000 marine mammals in
the most brutal way imaginable. They use loud noises to
disorient and herd whole pods of dolphins, porpoises and small
whales into shallow bays, then stretch nets across the mouth of
the bay to close off all exits. The next morning, the slaughter
begins, as fishermen use sharp spears and hooks to massacre the
helpless cetaceans. Most of them are butchered for meat that is
sold in restaurants and supermarkets, while some are sold to
marine parks where they spend years in loneliness and
deprivation for the "entertainment" of audiences.

This annual slaughter is the largest massacre of dolphins
anywhere in the world, and it continues because the atrocity is
deliberately kept hidden from the Japanese people. That is why
each year on September 20th, a host of groups around the world
join together to organize an international day of protest to
expose the killing and put pressure on the Japanese Government
to end it once and for all. As part of this day of action, IDA
and the Earth Island Institute (http://www.earthisland.org) will
co-host a demonstration at the Japanese consulate in San
Francisco to coincide with protests taking place around the
world. Volunteers from both groups will carry signs and hand out
literature condemning the slaughter. IDA will also hold protests
at the Japanese consulate in Los Angeles, Seattle, and Portland,
Ore.

What You Can Do:

3. WRITE JAPANESE OFFICIALS TODAY. Let them know that the blood
that continues to spill from the dolphins slaughtered in Japan
stains our humanity and taints Japan's international image.
