Historic Arizona Vote Bans Cruel Crates
for Veal Calves and Pregnant Pigs!

The ballot tally of Arizona voters on Election Day, November 7, 2006, proved that most citizens are opposed to the standard agriculture practices in modern factory farms which disallow adequate space and movement for male calves raised for veal and pregnant pigs. An overwhelming 61.5 percent of voters said Yes to Proposition 204 which will allow these animals enough room to turn around and stretch their limbs.

The passing of this precedent-setting humane proposition makes Arizona the first state in the nation to enact such a measure to ban veal crates and the second state to ban gestation crates for pregnant pigs. The gestation crate for breeding pigs was outlawed through a citizen initiative in Florida in 2002.

Arizonans for Humane Farms, a coalition of animal advocacy groups including Farm Sanctuary, launched this statewide ballot campaign in September, 2005. The November 7 vote is a triumph for farm animals everywhere and the individuals who advocate on their behalf.

THANK YOU to all who worked to help make this amazing victory a reality!

VOTE YES ON PROPOSITION 204

LEARN HOW TO HELP BAN ABUSIVE FACTORY FARMING PRACTICES IN ARIZONA
The cruel and intensive confinement of veal calves and pregnant pigs on industrialized factory farms may soon be banned if enough support is given to a crucial ballot initiative effort now underway in Arizona! This ballot initiative aims to stop cruel, industrialized corporate factory farms in Arizona which place profit ahead of animal welfare. Gestation crates were banned in Florida as a result of a similar grassroots citizen initiative.

July 6, 2006 update: Arizonans for Humane Farms, a coalition of animal-welfare agencies including Farm Sanctuary, have reached a landmark goal! 123,000 valid signatures were required to qualify this humane initiative for the November 2006 ballot. Our goal was to collect at least 200,000 signatures in the ten-month gathering period, but dedicated volunteers surpassed expectations, and we have turned in over 218,000 signatures! These signatures were submitted to the Arizona Secretary of State on July 6, 2006. This groundbreaking ballot initiative is now on its way in Arizona, as Proposition 204, to outlaw the cruel and intensive confinement of pregnant pigs in "gestation crates" and male calves in veal crates on industrialized factory farms. Click Here to read the July press release by Arizonans for Humane Farms.

The pork industry and their agribusiness allies have raised vast amounts of money and are funding an extensive advertising campaign throughout Arizona. They do not want to allow calves raised for veal and pregnant pigs to be able to turn around and stretch their limbs! Instead of focusing on the actual issues addressed by Proposition 204, the factory farming industry is attempting to divert the message with dismissive smear tactics.

Arizona media have written about this initiative and we hope to give this effort much more attention:

This important measure will phase out the use of "gestation crates" for breeding pigs and prevent the use of veal crates for veal calves. Enough voter signatures have been secured to officially submit the initiative onto this year's ballot. However, the next step will be to raise awareness among Arizona voters about these cruel confinement systems used in modern factory farms which do not allow animals enough room to simply turn around, lie down and extend their limbs! Television ads and other communications efforts, encouraging voters to Vote Yes on Prop 204, will air as the vote nears. The factory farming industry is rallying its troops and organizing an aggressive campaign to defeat this humane initiative. We must do all we can to ensure its passage!
