Dominos Sugar is one example of how workforce housing can happen. This company proved how fast workforce housing can happen if both the employees, the community leaders and the company work together for a common goal.

After hurricane Katrina, many businesses went out of business both due to storm damage and due to the loss of workers who’s homes were destroyed by the hurricane. Dominos Sugar suffered storm damage, but set a goal of getting back up to full production as quickly as possible. They needed workers to attain this goal, but they had all disappeared because their homes had been destroyed, and they could not afford to rent hotel rooms or buy new homes, even if they did exist.

In this case, after the water subsided and the damage was fixed, Dominos ordered and received emergency workforce housing from FEMA within two weeks of them being built. Dominos used a nearby corporate owned plot of land to build a whole workforce housing development, using the FEMA provided trailers. They put in sewer systems, cleaned the grounds, provided generators, and put in what amounted to a complete subdivision of two hundred manufactured homes. Dominos asked the families of the workers to move into the manufactured homes, in return for coming back to the storm damaged city and getting back to work quickly.

Building this whole neighborhood will cost the company about 6 million dollars if the trailers are kept for the full two years as agreed upon. Dominos is building a park for children to play in, a community center and more for their workforce.

Because of what the company did, other community assets repaired themselves and went back to work quicker, such as a school, restaurants, and daycare centers. The company stimulated the process of bringing back to life a community that had been completely destroyed.

The company provided jobs for the devastated community, which created a tax base. Employees now spend their money in the local community, thereby stimulating other businesses back into operation and profitability.  Employees went back to work quickly, without having to rebuild their permanent homes, while still getting safe and secure housing, at no charge.

If one company can do this after having their whole factory and town completely destroyed, just think of what companies can do locally in terms of affordable housing, if they and their community leaders set their minds and hearts to it.
