"It's over for the U.S. in Afghanistan, but that doesn't mean the death and destruction are about to stop. Quagmires don't just go away. However, the signs are everywhere that the American course in that nation is doomed, that those directing this forlorn attempt at occupation of a country that has never tolerated occupation know there is no positive end in sight, and that the locals from President Hamid Karzai to the competing warlords and the Taliban are cutting their own deals on the assumption that our wishes no longer matter."

We would like to thank you again for signing onto our statement on Afghanistan. Your names lend important credibility to our efforts.

We are planning to release the statement on Tuesday, February 17th. We will post it on our website as well as distribute a formal press release to media outlets. Following the statement's release, we will continue to reach out to public figures, including elected officials, retired military and diplomatic personnel, and intellectuals, and encourage them to sign the statement as well.

However, we hope to have as many signers as possible before the statement goes public. Therefore we are making one more request of you: please reach out to your colleagues between now and Monday and ask them to sign our statement.

Anyone willing to sign on can contact us at getafghanistanright@gmail.com.

The more support we have, the more we can affect the debate around Afghanistan.

Thank you again for your help with this critical issue at an important moment in our country's history. We look forward to a successful statement release on Tuesday. If you have any questions, or if you would like to make a comment for us to include in our press release, please contact us at getafghanistanright@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Alex Thurston

Statement:

"As Americans eager to help President Obama build prosperity at home
and peace abroad, we are gravely concerned by plans to increase our
military presence in Afghanistan. Without a clear strategy, benchmarks
for success, and a plan to bring our troops home, this escalation will
only prolong the American-led occupation – increasing anti-American
sentiment throughout the region – while failing to make America any
safer. In a time of economic crisis, these resources can be better
used to solve problems here at home.

"We urge elected and appointed leaders to postpone troop increases in
Afghanistan to allow for a robust public debate on the goals of our
presence there and the strategies best suited to achieving them.

"In back-to-back election cycles, a solid majority of Americans
repudiated Bush's handling of wars waged without accountability and
transparency.  If we are to truly change America's foreign policy, we
must avoid the mistake of escalating a war with no end in sight."
