"A FEW years ago, I accepted a Golden Globe award by barking out an expletive. One imagines President Obama did the same when he heard about his Nobel, and not out of excitement"........ see link below for the rest of the story

"Can you imagine what a state of mind without illusions is like? How would it feel? Try to remember when there was a time, - perhaps a minute, maybe even less-when nothing came to interrupt your peace; when you were certain you were loved and safe. Then try picture what it would be like to have that moment be extended to the end of time and to eternity. Then let the same sense of quiet that you felt be multiplied a hundred times, and then be multiplied another hundred more.

And now you have a hint, no more than just the faintest intimation of the state of your mind will rest in when the truth has come."

"Racism is common to most and probably all societies. Laws never seem entirely to eliminate it. It was the essential tool in the creation of modern settler states. The United States could not have come into existence without the obliteration of North American Indian cultures and of large numbers of the people themselves. They had to die so the US could be born.
In Australia the indigenous people of Tasmania were wiped out to the last man, woman and child, while on the mainland the tribes were massacred, confined, stripped of their ancestral land and eventually turned into fringe dwellers. Until recently Australia had a prime minister who could deny that aboriginal children of mixed ‘blood’ were taken from their parents up to the 1930s and refused to issue any expression of remorse for their mistreatment.
More recent targets of racism have been Lebanese and Vietnamese immigrants, while the Howard federal government’s racist treatment of Iraqi and Afghan refugees and asylum seekers remains one of the most shameful chapters of Australia’s history.".............cont. at link below

Good article showing the history and evolution of racism, as well as the progress that has been made, mostly by human rights and peace activists.

Two Questions for Obama

Tonight, President Barack Obama will lay out his priorities for the nation in his first address to Congress. The president has a lot on his plate right now. One of the key questions for him is how to make good on his promises to end the killing in Afghanistan and initiate a new U.S. diplomatic initiative with Iran.

As you listen to the president's speech tonight, we hope you'll pay particular attention to how he answers two key questions.

When will the United States begin talking with Iran?
Iran's cooperation is essential to peace in Iraq, to stabilizing Afghanistan, to helping advance Israeli-Palestinian peace, and to rebuilding nuclear nonproliferation. The president has pledged to open diplomatic talks with Iran. The news that Iran is close to opening its first nuclear power plant makes the need for talks all the more urgent.

How will the United States help bring peace to Afghanistan?
Expanding the U.S. war isn't the answer. Instead, our government should expand U.S. diplomatic reach (including talks with the Taliban), invest in that country's long-term development, and provide aid for Afghan refugees, who with Iraqi refugees make up half the world's refugee population.

Take Action

Listen to the speech or read the text. Then
write a letter to the editor of your local newspaper in response. We've provided a sample letter that focuses on the two questions above.

To increase the chances that your letter will be published, you should submit it tonight or first thing tomorrow morning.

We would like to thank you again for signing onto our statement on Afghanistan. Your names lend important credibility to our efforts.

We are planning to release the statement on Tuesday, February 17th. We will post it on our website as well as distribute a formal press release to media outlets. Following the statement's release, we will continue to reach out to public figures, including elected officials, retired military and diplomatic personnel, and intellectuals, and encourage them to sign the statement as well.

However, we hope to have as many signers as possible before the statement goes public. Therefore we are making one more request of you: please reach out to your colleagues between now and Monday and ask them to sign our statement.

Anyone willing to sign on can contact us at getafghanistanright@gmail.com.

The more support we have, the more we can affect the debate around Afghanistan.

Thank you again for your help with this critical issue at an important moment in our country's history. We look forward to a successful statement release on Tuesday. If you have any questions, or if you would like to make a comment for us to include in our press release, please contact us at getafghanistanright@gmail.com.

Sincerely,

Alex Thurston

Statement:

"As Americans eager to help President Obama build prosperity at home
and peace abroad, we are gravely concerned by plans to increase our
military presence in Afghanistan. Without a clear strategy, benchmarks
for success, and a plan to bring our troops home, this escalation will
only prolong the American-led occupation – increasing anti-American
sentiment throughout the region – while failing to make America any
safer. In a time of economic crisis, these resources can be better
used to solve problems here at home.

"We urge elected and appointed leaders to postpone troop increases in
Afghanistan to allow for a robust public debate on the goals of our
presence there and the strategies best suited to achieving them.

"In back-to-back election cycles, a solid majority of Americans
repudiated Bush's handling of wars waged without accountability and
transparency.  If we are to truly change America's foreign policy, we
must avoid the mistake of escalating a war with no end in sight."

Happy holidays

From Michelle Obama,

This holiday season, the grassroots movement you helped build can make a big difference for those in need.

I hope you will join me in supporting your favorite charity or contributing to causes that are especially meaningful to me and my family.

While many of us will spend the holidays counting our blessings and sharing dinner with loved ones, millions of people around the country won't be so fortunate.
Donating to your local food bank will help provide a holiday meal to people in your community who can't afford one.

Talking with the families of deployed troops was one of the most rewarding experiences I had during the campaign.
Giving to Operation USO Care Package is a great way to send members of our military stationed around the world a reminder that someone back home is thinking of them.

This is a time to celebrate our blessings, the new year, and a new era for our country. But it's also a time to come together on behalf of those who need our help.

Do what you can to help today by locating your local food bank and giving your support:

Or send a care package to an American in uniform:

Thank you for all that you do and have a very happy holiday season,

Michelle Obama
