This is a great movie if you want to see the government covering up all of the radiation dangers and high readings.

Find out what happens to a scientist who tries to measure radiation readings, and what he does after he is told NOT to measure the aftermath of Fukushima radiation releases, by the government he works for.

Watch the public hearings where the government tries to convince people that contaminated dirt is 'safe', and high radiation readings are OK for children..

Watch as the nuclear scientists trying to measure radiation are refused entrance to the Fukushima plant site.

Bottom line, the government and nuclear industry is covering up, denying and spinning the whole Fukushima disaster to this day, both to their own citizens and to the rest of the world.

According to a recent press release from the Physcians For Social Responsibility - Dr. Ira Helfand MD reported that: "the nuclear industry’s most common argument is that there is no significant health consequences associated with low doses of radiation.  However, it is the consensus of the medical and scientific community, summarized in the National Research Council’s BEIR VII report, that there is no safe level of radiation.  Any exposure, including exposure to naturally occurring background radiation, creates an increased risk of cancer.  The BEIR report concluded that every thousand man rems of radiation exposure will cause one cancer.

While the risk of low dose exposure may be very low for a given individual, when large numbers of people are exposed, there are health consequences.  If one person receives 1 rem of exposure, he or she has a one in one thousand chance of getting cancer.  If a thousand people are exposed, one of them will get cancer.  If a million people are exposed, one thousand of them will get cancer.  While the dose of radiation in a glass of drinking water may be so low that any one person does not need to take specific protective measures, the cumulative impact on the whole community may be very significant.

“We cannot be asked to protect the public after the fact,” said Ira Helfand, MD, a member of the Board of Physicians for Social Responsibility. “The health system cannot respond adequately to a large scale disaster on the order of Fukushima. The risks to public health, the economy and our environment from nuclear power far outweigh the benefits.”

According to Dr. Ira Helfand MD, the Nuclear Industry TEPCO and Japanese government say that all nuclear radiation is ‘safe’, up to 100 Millisieverts. They say this is OK for everyone, and below that there are NO DETECTABLE HEALTH EFFECTS. This is not true. Globally, the non industry impartial and truly independant scientists and doctors who study this, say there is NO SAFE AMOUNT OF RADIATION. The consensus of these scientists and medical professionals is expressed via the National Research Council’s BEIR VII Report, which states that anything above backround radiation has additional health risks and is dangerous.

Dr. Ira Helfand MD says that the 100 Millisieverts radiation exposure level WILL CREATE a 1 in 100 risk for cancer (in healthy adults). There is no measurable immediate effect on health, and no observable immediate health consequence. So it is easy to suppose and conclude that no negative health effect is possible. Because it is invisible, and nothing immediate happens, it is easy to conclude there is no danger. But..... 1 in 100 people exposed will get eventually get cancer, despite there being no directly traceable route from the initial exposure; 100 Millisieverts of radioactivity. Most of this conclusion is calculated from Hiroshima and Nagasaki from the thousands of individuals exposed there to a one time radiation dose, for a limited period of time.

Dr. Ira Helfand MD says that animal studies also confirm this result.  There is a linear negative response that causes cancer all the way down to zero, and there is no ‘safe’ dose. Once a person gets cancer, they have a 50/50 chance of dying. As an example of how easy it is to dismiss negative effects from radiation, many compared it to Bhopal. Bhopal had a chemical exposure, which is very different from radiation exposure. In Bhopal, a large number of people died almost immediately and a large number of people had immediate and sever negative health effects, so it is easy to observe and track the negative effects from there. In Chernobyl, Nagasaki, etc., the deaths and diseases that come from radiation are spread out over decades and harder to see, harder to study, but the effects are there, and are observable, compared to populations that were NOT exposed.

Dr. Ira Helfand MD, says that at 100 Millisieverts exposure;

1 million people - 10,000 will get cancer

10 million people - 100,000 will get cancer

100,000,000 people, 1 million will get cancer.

Dr. Ira Helfand MD says that women are more sensitive to radiation than men are. It used to be common to do Xrays on pregnant women to see if the pelvis was big enough to support birth. This is no longer done. Why not? Doctors found out that just ONE Xray that exposed a fetus increased cancer in that child by 1-2 times over. In another example of how just ONE low dose of radiation can cause measurable harm; women getting dental Xrays end up having lower birth weight babies, through the negatively affected thyroid gland possibly.

Cat Scans are cumulative radiation. Each dose adds to the last dose. Add them together to get the total dose. The same goes for accidental nuclear radiation exposure. Add all radiation exposure together to get the total exposure. Even low dose radiation exposure causes measurable effects, as explained above.

Children are much much more sensitive to the same doses received by adults.

Fetuses are much, much much more sensitive than children or adults to the same dose of radiation.

In adults at a 20 Millisiverts exposure rate, 1 in 200 children will get cancer from this exposure, where adults have a much lower rate of cancer from the same dose.

Near Fukushima, where people are still living and going to school, radiatioon readings have been taken. At one meter above ground, where a child would be, cumulative dose was on order of 1000 milliRem. Soil concentrations of Cesium 137 in 40 Km zone was the same amount that triggered evacuations near Chernobyl, but people are not being evacuated and children as well as pregnant moms with fetuses are 'allowed' to live there, because TEPCO, and the Japanese government says it is 'safe'.

Internal radiation exposure is MUCH different than external radiation as well. If radiation exposure is external, such as from a nuclear fuel rod sitting on the ground,  as one moves away from the source of this radiation, the radiation exposure and danger as well as negative health effects go down.

Internal radiation exposure is much more dangerous than external exposure, because the radiation dose one gets exposed to does not go away and one cannot get away from it by creating distance. Internal radiation is carried with you, via 'hot' particles that are inhaled or ingested. A child can inhale 'hot' particles of uranium or plutonium, via stirred dust on the ground, or from random hot particles floating invisibly in the air around the world. These hot particles are continuously 'leaking' from the breached nuclear fuel cores and spent fuel pools at Fukushima in Japan.

Dr. Gunderson estimated that everyone in Japan is breathing in on a daily basis, between 50-100 of these hot particles per day. In the USA, everyone is breathing in between 5-10 of these 'hot' particles. Any one of these  particles can cause cancer, birth defects, or other problems, depending on where they lodge, are absorbed and then do damage.

Then it depends on what one eats, and how contaminated the food or drink is. Radiation comes in that way as well, plus through milk that is drunk for example. Food and water is sometimes highly concentrated radiation. Cows eat grass and concentrate the radiation into milk. In Hawaii, farmers measured milk with 18,000 times the normal level of radiation, due to this concentration effect.

According to Dr. Ira Helfand MD, here are the effects of radiation and what part of the body it affects, as well as teh disease or cancer it produces;

Iodine; iodine 131 goes to thyroid, causing thyroid cancer.

Cesium 171;acts like potassium, and goes to muscles and organs. It has a 30 year half life and causes diseases and cancers throughout the whole body, including heart disease, heat attacks, strokes, diabetes, etc.

Strontium; like Calcium, goes to bones 30 half life, where it causes bone cancer or leukemia.

Plutonium; can be inhaled as hot particle or drunk in water, or be brought in via food. It has a 24,000 year half life, lung cancer possible if one hot particle inhaled and sticks. It is a highly toxic/poisonous heavy metal, much worse than uranium. One micro particle can cause cancer.

What was the conclusion of this press conference?

As a human race, we do know; there will be another nuclear disaster after this one. We can prevent this. Humans are fallible. NO system is perfect. We must take steps to protect public health.

UCS Action AlertSetting the Precedent for Clean Energy

Dear Eric,

Carefully-sited offshore wind power can make a critical contribution to reducing global warming pollution and cleaning up our nation’s energy supply. As America’s first offshore wind farm, Cape Wind would generate the equivalent of 75 percent of Cape Cod’s energy and would set an important precedent for the future of clean energy development in this country. More than seven years’ worth of state and federal assessments have found that Cape Wind would have overwhelmingly positive environmental effects. Now it needs to clear one last hurdle, a favorable ruling by the Department of Interior. Please urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to let Cape Wind finally be installed.

Take Action Now

Sincerely,
Ben Larson

Contact Secretary Ken Salazar today

Dear Secretary Salazar:

After its extended review by state and federal agencies, the Cape Wind permitting process should come to an end. Please issue a favorable Record of Decision on the outstanding "Section 106" process under the National Historic Preservation Act, and let Cape Wind be built.

The Cape Wind project has undergone more than seven years of exhaustive reviews by both the state and federal government, including a comprehensive two-year review by the federal Minerals Management Service, which examined 27 categories of potential effects of the proposal. The reviews found that the vast majority of the project’s environmental effects will be minor, negligible, or even positive, and there will likely be no significant lasting negative impacts. With this in mind, Cape Wind should proceed, especially as it will not only reduce global warming pollution but will set a precedent—showing the way we can begin developing our country’s offshore wind resources in a responsible manner.

Please issue a favorable record of decision and let the Cape Wind project proceed.
