Organic and Fair Trade Sweeteners: A Sweet Deal All Around

 

Honey BearThe holidays are a sweet time of year: we gather to share coffee, tea, cookies, and other treats with friends and family as a sign of good cheer and togetherness. But is your chosen sweetener as sweet a deal for the earth--and the workers who produce it--as it is sweet to the taste?

 

Refined sugar is generally cultivated with the use of pesticides, herbicides and, in the case of sugar beets, genetically modified seeds, and it is intensively processed with chemicals. Fair Trade: Because the Global Economy is Everyone's Economy

But facing our own country's economic challenges does not mean we can turn our backs on workers elsewhere who are tethered to us by the global economy. The principles of fair trade call us to look beyond cheap goods and temporary solutions to supporting sustainable markets and environmental responsibility.

 

Look for Fair Trade products as one way to ensure that your dollars reflect your values and use your consumer power to shift the global marketplace.
