Mother Polar Bear and Cubs

Polar bears and oil don’t mix. Act now to protect wild lands from oil exploitation.

Make an emergency donation to The Wilderness Society today.

Does this make sense to you?

We taxpayers help pay for $10 billion in government subsidies to the oil, coal and natural gas industries each year.

Companies like Exxon Mobil and Shell are seeing a robust increase in profits. Exxon Mobil just reported quarterly earnings of $10.3 billion, a surge of 41% from last year and Shell's net income rose to $6.98 billion from $3.46 billion in the same period in 2010.

These companies then turn around and spend more than $100 million on Washington lobbyists to protect their subsidies and lobby for more drilling. In 2010, that paid for 802 oil and gas lobbyists.

And then, those lobbyists, in the name of energy independence, demand that we open up millions of acres of pristine American lands and wildlife habitat, including the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, to drilling.

Not on our watch.

Help us stop this outrage and protect the wild. Please make an emergency donation to The Wilderness Society today.

We don’t have 800 lobbyists, but we have someone much better -- you. The Wilderness Society is half a million strong. Our scientists and other wilderness experts work in Washington and with local communities from coast to coast. Our Wild Alerts online community mobilizes thousands of messages to Congress and other decision makers each week.

We’ve faced numerous attacks on America’s natural legacy before, and we’ve won. We’re confident that wilderness-loving Americans can break this cycle of greed and protect our wild lands and waters from these recent attacks as well. We can protect the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge and its vast populations of polar bears and other threatened animals. We can stop the risky drilling in Arctic waters where whales, walruses and other marine mammals make their homes, and where Alaska Natives have survived using these marine resources for thousands of years.

And that’s just one example of American places we must stand up to protect.

We can defeat the deep pockets of oil, but we need your help. Your urgent donation will help us rebuff the latest efforts to plunder America's wild.

As always, we are deeply grateful for all you do.

As we move into election season, we wanted to send you a quick update on our big campaign to challenge corporate influence and thank you for your good work!

We started this campaign, at the beginning of the summer, not knowing how many candidates we'd be able to get to commit to our effort and believing that only a massive grassroots effort would make this campaign possible. Thanks to your incredible work, that campaign has blown away this summer's goals.

In fact, nearly 200 candidates and members of Congress, along with 500,000 individuals, have endorsed the Fight Washington Corruption pledge—our three-part blueprint to overturn the Supreme Court's Citizens United ruling, enact publicly-financed elections, and reduce the influence of lobbyists in Washington.

Thanks in part to our work together, corporate lobbying and influence have become increasingly important themes in the election. Just last week, for example, The New York Times ran a front-page profile of Republican leader John Boehner focused on his links to corporate lobbyists1. And candidates like Paul Hodes in New Hampshire have come out with new plans to shut the revolving door between government and industry2.

Meanwhile, though, the problem is only getting worse. In the wake of Citizens United, corporate interests are spending an astounding $400 million to buy the election for Republicans3. Which is why our focus between now and November needs to be on supporting the candidates who've stood up against corporate influence, and beating back the hostile corporate takeover of Congress!

Succeeding in this election will be tough, but thanks to the amazing work that you and other MoveOn members did on this campaign over the summer we now have a solid foundation for taking on these Republicans and the corporations behind them. We'll be in touch soon with ways you can get involved in the election your area, but for now, thank you for your commitment to this campaign and to our cause.

Consumers Union

Help us keep the calls coming!Thousands of you gave $5 last week to fund our toll-free hotline. If you didn’t yet give, you can donate $5 now so we can keep the calls coming from Americans fed-up with special Wall Street deals!

The stock market is stronger and some companies say they may start hiring again. We all want to be hopeful, but we’re still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

That’s because the problems with our financial system -- risky mortgages packaged into riskier investments and big bonuses for big gambling -- have not been fixed since Wall Street crashed our economy 18 months ago!

This week the Senate is finally addressing Wall Street reform. They’ve heard for months from slick lobbyists about why the rules shouldn’t change, how they should keep hiding their secret deals, and why they deserve special loopholes. We need you to call your Senators right now and say you’re sick of waiting for the other shoe to drop! Tell your Senators to pass tough rules so we won’t have to endure another economic meltdown!

Call your Senators toll-free – 1 (800) 944-6762 – to vote YES for Wall Street reform that stops the gambling and protects you as a consumer.

Thousands of you last week gave $5 or more to fund this toll-free phone line so real people could get their voices heard in Washington. Now let’s flood the Senate offices with voices of Americans fed-up with the special deals for Wall Street! It’s time we return common-sense to our economy and financial system.

Click on the links for more talking points, or just tell your Senators’ staff you want them to pass a strong Wall Street reform bill that will:

  • Protect consumers from schemes and tricks. An independent watchdog must be created so when financial red flags are spotted they can act quickly to prevent them, rather than deal with the bureaucratic maze regulators do now.
  • End taxpayer bailouts. If a financial institution causes their own mess, they should clean it up. Banks and financial companies should pay into a fund to cover any rescue, not taxpayers. No one should be ‘too big to fail.’
  • Stop the hidden gambling. Eliminate the loopholes that let Wall Street and banks hide the massive, risky side-bets that tanked our economy.
  • Let states protect us. States should have the right to do more than what the Fed says to protect residents from emerging financial schemes.
  • Bring unfair credit card rate hikes back down. Millions of Americans were hit with rate hikes last year before the new credit card law went into effect. A solution should be added to the reform bill that gives consumers a legitimate process to review and rollback unfair rate hikes.

Call 1 (800) 944-6762 now to be directly connected. Tell your Senators to vote YES for reforms that help our economy.

After you call, please forward this to others you know who want our economy to move forward – not back again – so they can lend their voice, too.

Common Cause - Holding Power Accountable

Dear USA Citizen

The Fair Elections Now Act was introduced in Congress TODAY.

Help make sure our elected leaders focus on solving our country’s problems – not fundraising.

Urge your Representative to support the Fair Elections Now Act!

Our nation is facing many challenges. But instead of focusing on addressing important issues like jobs, the economy and healthcare, elected officials in Washington are spending countless hours fundraising to make sure they can afford to run their next campaign.

And the problem is getting worse. Because the costs of campaigns are skyrocketing, our officials are more and more dependent on big contributions from wealthy donors and lobbyists, giving special interests undue influence over important policy decisions.

We need our leaders to spend more time on the job, instead of on the fundraising circuit. The bipartisan Fair Elections Now Act – introduced in Congress today – will make that possible.

Click here to write your Representative and urge strong support for the Fair Elections Now Act!

Under the Fair Elections Now Act, qualified candidates take no contributions larger than $100. Instead, candidates seek small contributions from people in their home states, redirecting fundraising activities to a broader range of citizens, and allowing strong candidates to qualify for public funding to run a competitive campaign.

This important bill would help open the door to leadership for qualified candidates, not just those who are the best fundraisers, allow elected officials to spend their time addressing policy issues rather than focusing on collecting large contributions, and ensure lawmakers are no longer indebted to the wealthy donors who financed their campaigns.

Ask your Representative to support the Fair Elections Now Act TODAY!

The rising costs of Congressional campaigns are simply unsustainable, and future candidates will have to spend more and more time trying to raise enough money to compete.

The Fair Elections Now Act ends the special interest money chase and allows our leaders to do what we elected them to do – focus on solving our nation’s challenges.

Help put an end to the hunt for big dollars – email your Representative today!

And after you email your Representative, please consider following your message up with a phone call to double your impact on this important issue!

Thanks for all you do,

Arn Pearson

How is it that oppressive countries with no human rights and dictators in charge have negotiated themselves significant "support from the U.S. government, whether military assistance (Egypt, Colombia), development aid (Azerbaijan, Nigeria), expanded trade opportunities (Angola, Cameroon), or official Washington visits for their leaders (Equatorial Guinea, Kazakhstan). The granting of favorable concessions to dictatorial regimes is a practice hardly limited to the current administration: Bill Clinton came into office having said that China’s access to American markets should be tied to improved human rights—specifically its willingness to “recognize the legitimacy of those kids that were carrying the Statue of Liberty” at Tiananmen Square—but left having helped Beijing attain its long-cherished goal of Permanent Most Favored Nation trade status. Jimmy Carter put the promotion of human rights at the heart of his foreign policy, yet he cut deals for South American generals and Persian Gulf monarchs in much the same fashion as his successor, Ronald Reagan."

Could it be the influence of large corporations and lobbyists? Click on the above link and read how it is done.
