Robert Scheer on Troy Davis and the Death Penalty

"Murder Is Good Politics, Bad Justice" -- In my own experience as a journalist covering this issue, the vast majority of politicians who defend capital punishment do so out of rank opportunism.

Truthdig Radio: The Death of Troy Davis
"Dave Zirin and Mike Farrell on the Death of Troy Davis" -- On Wednesday’s Truthdig Radio in collaboration with KPFK, in the hours before the execution of Troy Davis, Mike Farrell and Dave Zirin discussed what Zirin called a “legal lynching.” Also: L.A.'s labor battle and the politics of Hollywood.

Capital Punishment By Country....It turns out that the USA is about the ONLY civilized country left that kills people 'legally'. Everyone else has made murdering people illegal, except for Communist China, some African countries and some Middle Eastern countries like Libya and dictators like North Korea.. We are in good company, if you count good company as dictators and despots.

In the US, some states have also abolished the death penalty. Hopefully this trend will continue.

A 5.8 earthquake shook central Virginia this afternoon. It was felt in both Washington D.C. to New York.

FEMA says that anyone who has a cell phone should refrain from using it after a major disaster. Cell phones were unusable in many areas, as everyone tried to call at once.

FEMA advises everyone to use the cellphone only to text messages during a disaster. Texting uses up a lot less 'memory' or bandwidth, thus allowing more people to communicate at the same time.

Email is another way that people can communicate with more chance of success, during a disaster.

My comment: If the Internet and electricity is still working, then the above advice seems sound. But if the power goes off, then none of the above will work.

If the power goes out during a disaster, standard landline phones (not the ones that plug into the wall power) and phone lines will be the only thing left with any possibility of communication other than yelling or sending a letter by mail.

There may also be a few short wave radio sets, powered by batteries or solar, of course.

It helps to have a battery powered radio for the above reasons, so you can find out what is happening outside of the standard ways we get information these days, all of which require the electrical grid to be working and in good shape.

Local radio stations might also still work on backup power.

This is a great movie if you want to see the government covering up all of the radiation dangers and high readings.

Find out what happens to a scientist who tries to measure radiation readings, and what he does after he is told NOT to measure the aftermath of Fukushima radiation releases, by the government he works for.

Watch the public hearings where the government tries to convince people that contaminated dirt is 'safe', and high radiation readings are OK for children..

Watch as the nuclear scientists trying to measure radiation are refused entrance to the Fukushima plant site.

Bottom line, the government and nuclear industry is covering up, denying and spinning the whole Fukushima disaster to this day, both to their own citizens and to the rest of the world.

Welcome to, home of the National Radiation Map, depicting environmental radiation levels across the USA, updated in real time every 3 minutes. This is the first web site where the average citizen (or anyone in the world) can see what radiation levels are anywhere in the USA

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the people of Japan who have experienced the worst earthquake in their country since 1923. The news coming out of Japan is sobering, if not grim. Thousands of people are dead or missing and the country’s infrastructure has been severely damaged.

Right now, the situation concerning several of Japan’s nuclear reactors is extremely fluid, and frankly, there is a lot of speculation. However, we are fairly confident in the news reports that indicate two nuclear reactors are in partial meltdown at the Fukushima Daiichi facility (known as Fukushima No.1). As we all witnessed yesterday, reactor #1 at Fukushima Daiichi experienced a hydrogen explosion. Currently, reactor #3 at the Fukushima Daiichi plant is also experiencing serious problems. We are watching this reactor with particular concern because it is being powered by plutonium fuel (MOX) -- a fuel that burns hotter and is more unstable than traditional fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy is considering using this fuel in reactors owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority.

We are also hearing reports that officials are fighting for control of three additional reactors at a different facility, the Fukushima Daini facility (known as Fukushima No. 2). There are 23 reactors in the U.S. which have the same design as the ones under threat of meltdown in Japan and we will be monitoring how to address their safety problems.

Our job over the next several days is to make sure that accurate information is being seen by the U.S. and global public. Our staff, led by Damon Moglen, Tom Clements, and Ben Schreiber, have more than 50 years of combined experience working on nuclear related issues.

We are coordinating our response with Japanese and U.S. colleagues including the Physicians for Social Responsibility, Greenpeace, Nuclear Information Research Service, Beyond Nuclear and Citizens' Nuclear Information Center in Japan. We have already hosted a significant press conference that created a platform for experts on nuclear reactors to update and inform the media.

Since our founding, Friends of the Earth has opposed the construction of nuclear reactors for the very reasons we are witnessing in Japan. In the aftermath of this tragedy in Japan, there will be a very robust debate in the U.S. about the future of nuclear reactors. And we will participate in it.

In the meantime, I encourage you to review some of the links and information to the right, as well as listen to the experts that we assembled to help educate the press and public. If you have any questions for us, please don’t hesitate to contact us

President, Friends of the Earth
