As I've said before, I suffered from melanoma and had a harsh battle against it. Chemo and radiation left me thin and ill to the point of death. I felt that toxins were building up in my body, which is why I decided to do everything possible to get rid of them. So I turned vegan.

This was a HUGE step for me because I loved meat so much -- especially lamb and veal (I know, veal is HORRIDLY produced, but please, PETA people, give me a break). So it was difficult. Not only could I no longer eat meat, but I also had to try strange foods such as tofu and tempeh if i wanted to get the protein I needed. And I had to start eating more greens like collard greens. I also had to start cooking for myself more -- no more eating out every night for me. So, you see, it really was a lifestyle change for me -- from meat and potatoes to veggies, veggies and more veggies.

But let me tell you why I did it. Did you know that chickens, pigs, cows and fish accumulate a lot of toxins in their skin, which makes them highly toxic to our bodies, even if we remove the skin. The toxins seep in and make sure they move into our bodies. They have dioxins, pesticides, herbicides and more in them, just waiting to kill us. In fact, 80-90% of dietary toxins come from these sources, causing cancer. No wonder I got melanoma!

If you think you need meat to get your protein, think again, because Americans get too much, not too little. Sources besides meat include whole wheat bread, nuts, oatmeal, beans and of course soy -- which I have now come to adore. And too much protein can cause all sorts of health problems, from straining the kidneys to causing calcium loss and osteoporosis. People can get all the protein they need from vegetables, grains, beans and more!

Milk and dairy products are equally bad for you. Milk can cause heart disease, cancer and even, believe it or not, osteoporosis -- which the diary industry says it prevents. It also has a ton of antibiotics and pesticides, as well as fat and cholesterol. We all know the latter two can cause heart disease, but the former cause build ups of toxins in the body.

Of course, it was difficult to become vegan. I had to relearn everything I knew about food and eating and had to adhere strictly to a diet totally alien to me. However, I'm sure it helped my battle against cancer and so I will continue to be vegan for the rest of my life.
