Since I  have worked with children of all ages I have come to realise how much my parents did for me when I was young, considering they had to run a garage business  and look after a disabled child, you might say well a lot do that and I would agree but back in the 50’s a child who had had a stroke was unheard of and doctors at the top children’s hospital  Great Ormond Street in London said that I was one of the first in the United Kingdom and it was not only my parents that had to come to terms with having a disabled child  but at the time the doctors, physiotherapy and Education authorities were not sure what to do with me

When I think back my parents must have had a terrible amount of pressure on them, and now at age of 60 it is just making me see things a lot more clearly.

Growing up as a child in my day was a lot slower; the world was a lot slower there was very little crime. In the village where I used to live people would be able go to the local shops without locking their doors.

Once a year all the villagers came together to celebrate Guy Fawkes day and everyone took part in building the village bonfire and on the night of November 5th everyone used to get together on the village green for the bonfire and fireworks display and have a great night, people would bring food for all to enjoy, it was free and the community would be talking about the fun for weeks to come.

I also remember that most of the children would play together with no violence; there was rivalry at times but very little anger.

Another thing I can remember is a single man perhaps in his 40’s who used to spend some of his wages on us children in the village and perhaps once a month he would treat three or four of us to a train journey to the beach and fun fair but can you see what people would be calling him today its sad that things have had to change.

The children of today live in a time when everything moves so fast that they have little time to grow up and enjoy life as they should.

It’s not only the youngsters of today that lose out but the parents do as well. The pressure on parents is so great that many don’t even have time to sit and talk to their children and find out what is going on in their lives or what pressure is being placed upon them in school and in the community as a whole.

Can I urge you to help relieve the pressure on the youngsters, sit and talk don’t ridicule them because of the way they look, listen to them because they are our leaders of tomorrow
