Blog Action Day is an annual event held every October 15 that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking discussion around an issue of global importance. Blog Action Day 2009 will be one of the largest-ever social change events on the web, and dedicated to Climate Change. First and last, the purpose of Blog Action Day is to create a discussion. By all focusing on the same topic/ issue on the same day, the blogging community effectively changes the conversation on the web and focuses audiences around the globe on that issue.

My 2p to the discussion, because stewardship and/ or reverence for Creation are central themes of all faiths (and we all share the one only earth available), is a call for all people of faith (and none!) to pray for a positive outcome for Creation at the Copenhagen and - because faith is more powerful when followed by action - to help achieve this by also signing the following two calls:

350- Interfaith call ("350 represents more than just a scientific benchmark for a safe climate – there are also deeply moral and spiritual reasons for getting the world back below 350 ppm CO2. Social justice, creation care, stewardship, earth community, beloved community - there are many ways we can name and express our moral and spiritual perspectives related to this issue.")

Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change ("Stewardship and reverence for creation are central tenets of all faiths on Earth. Yet today we are endangering life on Earth with dangerous levels of greenhouse gas emissions. These gases are destabilizing the global climate system, heating the Earth, acidifying the oceans, and putting both humanity and all living creatures at unacceptable risk.")

Also, do feel free to pay a visit to Birmingham-based Faith and Climate Change project for any inspiration for further action in your locality.

World Environment Day (WED) was established by the UN General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. Commemorated yearly on 5 June, WED is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.

For Muslims (and so many others) every day should be environment day, as without ensuring, supporting a living environment, we'll have done a bad job of being God's guardian (khilafa) and in supporting achieving aims (maqasid) of Shariah (protection of life, dignity, offspring, property...).

As the Preamble of the EarthCharter states: "The choice is ours: form a global partnership to care for Earth and one another or risk the destruction of ourselves and the diversity of life. Fundamental changes are needed in our values, institutions, and ways of living. We must realize that when basic needs have been met, human development is primarily about being more, not having more." An example of choices we need to make, is regarding what we find acceptable or not regarding rubbish (see photos on what the poor have to endure) - or waste (God considers being wasteful as being friendly with the Devil...).

According to a new UN report, as reported by the BBC, climate change, environmental degradation and badly planned urban development are more likely to affect populations around the world. The report warns that millions of lives are in jeopardy because proper risk assessment is rarely carried out, particularly in developing countries.

What will we say on Day of Judgment? As Muslims we know we should pray, fast etc, but in the end they are the means to ensure the aims of Shariah: protection of life, dignity, offspring, property. So shall we heed the advice of the UN, which says spending money on risk reduction is a good investment - while loss of life, property and livelihoods is very costly.

"What's the purpose of a nice house if you have no good planet to put it on." - Henry David Thoreau

22 April is Earth Day, a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. It falls during spring in the northern hemisphere and autumn in the southern hemisphere. According to Wikipedia, it was founded by US Senator Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in 1970 and is celebrated in many countries every year. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969.

Want to do something on Earth Day, but lack inspiration? Look no further.

YES, this information finally made it to mainstream news: keeping flights cheap (airplane kerosene is fuel duty exempt!) so 'poor can fly' is nonsense... poor could NEVER afford to fly, but now openly asking for flights to reflect more their true environmental cost as poorest are affected most by climate change. According to an article in The Guardian, negotiators at UN climate talks in Bonn (Germany, in preparation for final meeting in Copenhagen in December) were told by the world's poorest 49 countries (called 'LDCs' or 'least developed'; as an aid worker I know all too well there is hunger and disease around the world, though in some other aspects believe that 'poor' countries are much richer than the 'developed world') that the annual 760m international air passengers should each pay a levy of about $6 (£5.4) on every flight to help those nations adapt to climate change, thus raising up to $10bn (£6.8bn) a year and help countries in the frontline of climate change adapt to the intense floods, droughts, sea level rises and crop failures that poor nations are experiencing as a result of global warming.

I suggest the rich are lucky that those already suffering from the consequences of our actions ask for so little. I prefer to pay the full pay in this life instead of wiggling out and be served with rest of bill on Day of Judgment. I pray for a positive outcome (for the planet, for us all, including future generations, not a quick buck for us in the short term)
