Call off the 2010 Seal Slaughter

The HSI ProtectSeals team is witnessing an ecological disaster for seals off Canada's east coast: so many baby seals will die this year before hunters even reach them. Mother harp seals need ice floes to give birth to and nurse their babies, but climate change has prevented much of the sea ice from forming this year. Environment Canada confirms 2010 has seen the lowest sea ice formation off Canada's east coast on record, and we are expecting mass seal pup mortalities as a result.

Ignoring this tragedy, Canadian Fisheries Minister Gail Shea says she will actually allow commercial sealers to slaughter what surviving pups they can find. If the hunt goes on, sealers will club and shoot seal pups on the tiny pans of ice they are clinging to. We need to act quickly.

Please implore Canada's Prime Minister, Stephen Harper, to cancel this year's commercial seal hunt.

The federal government plans to step up its efforts to fight opposition to the Canadian seal hunt by countering the online campaigns created by anti-sealing groups to correct what it says is misinformation about seal hunt

President Bush! - Close Guantanamo prison!
    - Part 2

Last week, nearly 50,000 of us from 160 countries signed Avaaz's call to close Guantanamo prison - making it the largest petition in the world opposing President Bush's assault on international law. Next week, we will run the petition in major US newspapers. To be counted and to see a map of which countries have the most signatures, click here:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/close_guantanamo/?cl=5866956

Guantanamo's former commander General Jay Hood has admitted, "Sometimes we just didn't get the right folks." Without trials, innocent people get caught in the mix. And let's face it, even guilty people have the right to a trial and to know what crimes they are accused of. Meanwhile, regimes around the world are using Guantanamo to excuse their own human rights abuses.

But now we have a chance for progress. Last week, US Defense Secretary Robert Gates finally said Guantanamo should be closed. President Bush's advisors are split down the middle - and a global outcry could tip the balance and push Bush to close Guantanamo forever.

Please sign the petition calling on the US government to close Guantanamo and for its inmates to be tried in a legitimate court or set free:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/close_guantanamo

Next week, we'll run ads featuring the petition in Washington, DC newspapers read by top Bush officials. It's time to show them that citizens from every country on earth want this injustice to end.

Nearly 400 men are trapped in the prison at Guantanamo without charge or trial. This prison is the symbol and the center of President Bush's assault on international law.

4th Apr
Dear Avaaz Member,
Bush's top advisors are divided over whether to close Guantanamo prison forever. A massive global outcry could tip the balance. Sign the petition below - we will publish it in key US papers next week: Adel Hamad grew up in a small village in Sudan. Through hard work, he became a schoolteacher and hospital assistant. To support his family he took a better job at a community hospital in Afghanistan. Then late one night he was torn from his bed and sent to hell, as Guantanamo Bay Detainee #940.
Adel Hamad has had no trial. He has seen no family members for four years. Even US military officers reviewing his situation have called his detention "unconscionable." But he and nearly 400 other prisoners are still trapped at Guantanamo. Last week US Defense Secretary Robert Gates finally said Guantanamo should be closed. President Bush's advisors are split down the middle on this issue -- a massive global outcry could tip the balance, and push Bush to close Guantanamo forever. Click below to sign the Close Guantanamo petition, and we'll run ads next week in major US papers announcing the number of signatures:

http://www.avaaz.org/en/close_guantanamo

It's now clear that many of the detainees are simply innocent people caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. Guantanamo's former commander General Jay Hood has admitted, "Sometimes we just didn't get the right folks." This is what happens when people are held without charge or trial.

After being held for five years, last week Australian David Hicks was finally charged -- and sentenced to just 9 months in an Australian prison. This hardly looks like the "worst of the worst" - words the Bush Administration used to justify ignoring basic standards of justice. Meanwhile, as regimes around the world use Guantanamo to excuse their own human rights abuses, international law keeps taking a beating.

Sign the petition calling on the US government to close Guantanamo , and for its inmates to be tried in a legitimate court or set free. Let's run ads in Washington DC and show that citizens from every country on earth want this injustice to end.

In hope,

Ricken, Milena, Tom, Graziela and the Avaaz Team
