SHAC 'Financial Focus' week of action - Email alert, Part 1

As part of the Global 'Financial Focus' week of action against HLS' lifeline
lender, Fortress Investment Group

During the week of Monday 20th - 26th September we are calling for all
activists and compassionate people everywhere to organise demos, phone calls
and emails against HLS' lifeline lender, Fortress Investment Group, and all
associated, including shareholders - Nomura, Legg Mason, Bank Of America and
Sankaty Advisors and other subsidiary companies owned by Fortress across the
world like, Intrawest, Rail America, GateHouse Media, CW Capital and many more.

For more information, see:
http://www.shac.net/action/fortress/targets/index.html
Where there are targets across the world that all make up the web of financial
support.

Fortress is vital to HLS' survival, who are still millions of dollars in
debt and are struggling to stay afloat. Since the recent buyout of HLS at the
end of last year, HLS are now in even more debt - totalling well over
$100million. Fortress themselves are also in heavy financial trouble due to the
recession - so now is a great time to ask them to recall HLS' loan of $70
million plus!

This is the company that, when HLS had no other financial options left in the
world, bailed them out with a multi-million dollar loan. This is the company
that, when later exposed as the life support of HLS, lied to SHAC and pretended
they had stopped the loan. And this is the company that, while HLS hit rock
bottom last year – have agreed to extend the loan and give them another
helping hand out of closure.

Remember, without this loan, HLS could not have stayed open these past years -
and if it was recalled, they could not stay open in the future. Since Fortress
bailed out HLS in 2006, over 600,000 animals have been tortured and died inside
HLS.

More information and global targets can be found at:
www.shac.net/action/fortress/index.html

For the animals, see you on the streets!

------------------------------------------------------------

If you can not attend a demo against one of many Fortress targets across the
world, then please do contact Fortress and associated companies during this
week of action, together we can put pressure on these companies - more details
below.

Phone Fortress during the week of action and ask them to stop funding animal
torture:

There will be 3 emails this week for people to contact companies involved and
to highlight HLS' disgusting track record.

===============================

Please do fell free to write your own letter or otherwise use our sample letter
below.

SAMPLE LETTER

Dear Sir/Madam

I am writing to you in relation to a $70 million loan that has been made to
Huntingdon__Life__Sciences (H-L- via your Drawbridge Special Opportunities
Fund. Without this loan H-L-S could not remain open and therefore Fortress are
in large part responsible for the cruel and violent actions going on inside
H-L-S. The fact that Fortress had set up a front company in Luxembourg called
Anchor_Sub_Funding shows that a lot of effort had been put into keeping this
loan secret, presumably to stop H-L-S' horrific record of cruelty, violence
and law breaking from tarnishing Fortress' reputation.

H-L-S have a long history of violence; they were most famously exposed in 1997
when channel 4 TV filmed workers punching beagle puppies in the face. In 2005
ex-workers spoke out about cruelty they had witnessed and in 2008 Animal
Defenders International went undercover inside H-L-S exposing cruel primate
experiments and disgusting conditions. H-L-S also have a track record of law
breaking and manipulation of data. During just one primate study, H-L-S broke
the law 526 times; and workers have been caught taking drugs and drinking on
site. To see more about these exposes please look at:
http://www.shac.net/HLS/exposed.html

I am urging you to explore all get out clauses in this loan and reel it in. I
also urge you to raise these issues with everyone you can within the company
and do everything in your power to halt your support of
Huntingdon_Life_Sciences.

Please raise this issue at any meetings you attend, and let all your colleagues
know about H-L-S.

For further information, please visit: www.shac.net

Yours faithfully

Watch & take action! The only mockery of the law would involve David Cameron repealing a law against cruelty because some of the most powerful people in this country simply refuse to obey it.

He's  great guy - please show him support (I'll send him all your comments and link to the share)

He's been on hunger strike from yesterday, drinks only water but the worst is that the last night was very cold, it rained all night.

The strike is against a builder of a new Leicester Animal Lab: Willmott Dixon

"ACTIVIST BEGINS HUNGER STRIKE PROTEST

An activist has today begun a hunger strike outside the office of Willmott Dixon in Coleshill in protest at the involvement in the construction of a new animal lab at the University of Leicester.

A local campaigner commented "Midlands Animal Rights activists want to mount the pressure on the company, and a 3 - 5 days hunger strike will start as of Monday 7th June 2010 at 12 noon outside of their site. We are hoping to publicise this in the local press as much as possible in order to expose Willmott Dixon to the public and thus further the pressure on them to pull out of their contract in helping to build the new vivisection laboratory for Leicester University."

Please lend your support by attending, or contacting Willmott Dixon in disgust at their involvement in the new lab:
Chantry House,
High Street,
Coleshill,

Visit the site for more info and take action to stop the LAB!!!

http://www.noleicesterlab.co.uk

Contact Willmott Dixon on the details below to ask them to stop building the new lab - sample letter below

To Whom It May Concern,

I write to you to express my concern about the role Willmott Dixon are playing in the construction of Leicester University's new animal laboratory. If Willmott Dixon continue in their role as main Contractor on the project then they will be responsible for the deaths of thousands of animals in the future.
It is known that Wllmott Dixon management have sent an internal email in which they state the new lab will only be using rodents, this is a blatant lie as Leicester staff have confirmed to protesters that mice, rats, guinea pigs and rabbits will be used initially and then there are plans to use dogs in the future. Willmott Dixon cannot know what the building will be used for in the future and should not risk having anything on their conscience, the only way to do this is to stop your contract with Leicester University immediately.
The scientific community has expressed large concerns about the reliability of drugs tested on animals as the genetic make up between species is so hugely different and in one study 80% of GP's expressed concerns about the reliability of animal testing, these are the people who will witness the side effects and are in one of the best positions to judge.
Please Do all you can to get your company to pull out of construction at Leicester University.

Regards,

VOTE4ANIMALS 2010

There's just 22 days to go to a General Election that will have a massive impact on the fate of billions of innocent animals in Britain over the next few years. Through our Protecting Animals in Democracy project we are working flat out to empower the public to press their candidates on animal protection issues and use their vote to make Britain a more compassionate country.

Lush give massive boost to VOTE4ANIMALS!

Ethical cosmetics firm Lush has provided a massive boost to the VOTE4ANIMALS 2010 campaign with a week-long campaign in their high street stores. Combined with ongoing articles on their website and facebook page, this has resulted in an astonishing ten-fold increase in the number of people visiting this site and lobbying their election candidates.

Lush staff also donned costumes and placards to leaflet outside their stores, helping gain extensive media coverage in regional newspapers and radio stations.

Dedicated animal advocates are requesting campaign leaflets from us by the thousand to deliver door-to-door, focussing on key marginal seats. This is maintaining the momentum of this campaign, which is impressing and inspiring humane voters to get active at this crucial time!

Candidates inundated

Thousands of letters have now been sent by voters to election candidates asking them to state clearly where they stand on the most important animal protection issues such as hunting, battery egg farming and animal experiments.

But we need to act quickly to maximise the level of awareness. Door-to-door deliveries are an efficient way of taking the message right into people's homes. And with our poll showing that 87% of people think animal welfare is a key measure of the state of our society, and 41% saying it is an important election issue for them, there is huge potential political power to be harnessed on behalf of animals.

Can you play your part in fulfilling that potential to save animals? On average it is possible to deliver 150 leaflets per hour. Please email me at dan@vote4animals.org.uk to order your leaflets. I can also provide information about key marginal seats that would be the best places to target.

Spreading the word on-line is another crucial way of engaging more people in the campaign. Please tell all your contacts about the VOTE4ANIMALS 2010 website and encourage them to lobby their candidates.

This next three weeks is crucial. Representing defenceless animals in this election process has to be a priority now for everyone who cares about animals. We can't let this chance slip away as it could be another five years before a similar opportunity comes round again.

The Edinburgh International Science Festival this April is planning to conduct an autopsy of a cow at Edinburgh Zoo as a part of its programme. The cow – killed for this autopsy - is being donated for this event, though its source has not been revealed.

The festival programme is describing the proposed autopsy as an opportunity to see, “What makes a cow interesting? …” and to “find out more exciting facts as our zoo vets perform a cow post mortem!” which suggests that it is acceptable to kill and cut open a mammal for nothing more than the curiosity of the public and, contrary to the claims of the Festival Director, does not advocate respect for animals. The fact that there is nothing to be learnt by this entire horrific event only amplifies the gross disrespect to animals and mocks the Festival’s theme of Biodiversity this year.

Ethical Voice for Animals (EVA), an animal rights group based in Edinburgh, have asked for the event to be dropped from the programme. Hundreds of people have sent emails to Simon Gage, the Festival Director and other stake holders and funders, including the City of Edinburgh Council and the Scottish Government. Several hundred supporters have also joined the Facebook page to stop this autopsy from going ahead.

In his response to EVA Simon Gage the Director admits that " ...the purpose of this event is not to learn anything new about the anatomy of a cow...."  The Evening News described it as “One event likely to raise a few eyebrows”.

A spokesperson for EVA said “The killing of yet another cow cannot provide any information which has not already been studied and documented. The Science Festival should highlight and celebrate the achievements of science over the years and the benefits they bring; instead, this reckless waste of life takes us back to the dark ages. We urge anyone who is concerned and wants to stop this event going ahead to contact the Director at: Simon@scifest.co.uk”

Your emails are needed - please email Simon Gage and others at the science festival asking them to stop the event from going ahead. See email and addresses below.
Simon@scifest.co.uk,sarah@scifest.co.uk; susie@scifest.co.uk; amy@scifest.co.uk; joan@scifest.co.uk; mathew@scifest.co.uk; fiona@scifest.co.uk; info@caare.org.uk

By dissecting the cow for public entertainment you are infact demeaning life and suggesting to the public that it is acceptable to kill and cut open a mammal for nothing more than the curiosity of the public. The fact that there is nothing to be learnt by this entire horrific event only amplifies your disrespect to animals and biodiversity.

This event does not celebrate biodiversity

but is simply a show for commercial public entertainment and its shock value. I urge you to take action and stop this dissection from going ahead.

I look forward to hearing from you,

below I'm pasting the festival director reply to EVA (Ethical Voice for Animals http://www.ethicalvoiceforanimals.org.uk ):

Sent by Simon Gage, Festival Director on 26th Feb., 2010

Thank you for taking the time to send me an email expressing your concern that a Cow Post Mortem will be part of the Edinburgh International Science Festival.

First of all I can reassure you that the cow is not being slaughtered specifically for the purpose of this event. No life is being taken to support this event. It is destined to be slaughtered regardless of whether we carry out the Post Mortem. Furthermore, I can reassure you that its termination will be carried out under the strict conditions of the current slaughter of animals legislation. I’d also like to clarify that the purpose of this event is not to learn anything new about the anatomy of a cow it is to provide a learning opportunity for the public.

At a broader level, may I explain that the purposes of the Science Festival and Edinburgh Zoo, which is the organisation carrying out this particular event. Both organisations are committed to celebrating the wonder of the natural world and to raising awareness of the need for humanity to pay greater respect to the world’s biodiversity. Indeed, marking 2010 as the International Year of Biodiversity is the main theme of this year’s science festival. If you look through our programme (www.sciencefestival.co.uk) you will find events on animal welfare, animal intelligence, birds, butterflies, a centre piece photographic exhibition by wildlife photographer Steve Bloom and more.

Both the Science Festival and the Zoo believe in giving the public opportunities that allow them to better understand the natural world. Gaining an appreciation of the anatomy of one of our most familiar farm animals is just one part of this effort.

Yours sincerely

Dr Simon Gage

Director

http://www.enfieldindependent.co.uk/news/localnews/4735793.Enfield_is_first__cruelty_free__council_in_UK/

ENFIELD is the first council in the country to use only "cruelty-free" cleaning products.

The British Union for the Abolition of Vivisection (BUAV), which campaigns to end animal experiments, voiced delight at the decision, made at last night's council meeting.

Councillor Christopher Cole introduced the motion in support of the BUAV's "Clean Up Cruelty" campaign, which seeks to end cruel animal testing for household products and their ingredients.

Enfield is now the first council in the UK whose cleaning contractors can only use BUAV-approved products.

BUAV chief executive Michelle Thew said: “The BUAV congratulates Enfield Council and its residents in taking this important stance.

"We urge other councils throughout the UK to adopt a similar position, and support our campaign to end the cruelty and suffering inflicted on animals to test cleaning products."

The BUAV campaign received success in Parliament recently, when all major parties pledged to put a ban on animal testing for household products in their manifestos for the next election.

In 1997 the Government decided to stop granting licences for cosmetics tests on animals, but there is no such prohibition for household products.

The BUAV’s Humane "Cosmetics Standard" and "Household Products Standard" are recognisable by the Leaping Bunny logo, an internationally recognised and patented cruelty-free certification.

For a list of BUAV-approved products, visit www.gocrueltyfree.org.
