WELL, HERE GOES.  IF MCCAIN'S VOTING RECORD AGAINST WOMEN IS NOT ENOUGH TO CONVINCE YOU THAT OBAMA IS THE MOST LEVEL-HEADED PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE, THEN THERE'S NOT MUCH ELSE TO SAY:

THE POST BELOW WILL GIVE YOU THE REASONS THAT YOU SHOULD TAKE ACTION AT THE PLANNED PARENTHOOD WEBSITE AGAINST THIS ARCHAIC MCCAIN IDEOLOGY:

Know John McCain

For the past 25 years, Sen. John McCain has voted against women's health on issues ranging from funding for family planning programs to requiring insurance coverage of birth control.

Sen. McCain has also opposed all legislation that would help reduce the rate of unintended pregnancies and the need for abortion. This has earned him the lowest rating possible from the Planned Parenthood Action Fund.

Just as alarming, Sen. McCain wants to overturn Roe v. Wade, potentially putting the lives and health of women in jeopardy. Sen. McCain is out of step with America's pro-choice majority: 62 percent of all voters support Roe v. Wade and, by a 20-point margin, voters believe abortion should be legal.

The Planned Parenthood Action Fund recently polled 1,205 women in 16 likely battleground states, finding that

  • Despite his extreme voting record, 51 percent of women voters in battleground states have no idea what John McCain's positions are on women's reproductive health issues.
  • Forty-nine percent of women currently backing McCain express pro-choice views, and 46 percent of women supporting McCain over Obama want to see Roe v. Wade upheld.
  • In a match-up with Barack Obama, 36 percent of pro-choice McCain supporters say they are less likely to vote for McCain when told that he opposes Roe v. Wade.

FOLKS, I AM SO VERY PROUD OF ALL THE ACTIVISTS HERE ON THIS NETWORK THAT WORKED SO VERY HARD TO GET THE MCCAIN ANTI-TORTURE BILL PASSED THROUGH THE CONGRESS.  THANKS TO ALL OF YOU WHO SIGNED PETITIONS, POSTED ARTICLES, AND WORKED SO VERY HARD ON THE SUBJECT OF HUMAN RIGHTS.  I KNOW THAT LOTS OF ARTICLES ON THE SUBJECT OF TORTURE WERE DELETED FROM ONE OF THE GROUP BOARDS THAT I WAS A MEMBER OF JUST RECENTLY.  IF ANY OF YOU WOULD LIKE TO POST ANY OF THOSE ARTICLES HERE ON THIS BLOG AND REPOST THE BLOG ON ANY DISCUSSION BOARD ON THE NETWORK, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO DO SO.  THE FOLLOWING IS A NEWSLETTER FROM HUMAN RIGHTS FIRST:

Dear Eva,

Your hard work paid off! Last night the House gave overwhelming support to Sen. McCain's ban on mistreatment of detainees in U.S. custody.

Many of you asked your representative to support Sen. McCain's ban on torture and cruel treatment. And they did - in a stunning 308 to 122 vote. The House vote follows the similarly overwhelming vote in the Senate - 90 to 9 - in October.

See how your representative voted: http://clerk.house.gov/evs/2005/roll630.xml

Now, the fate of Sen. McCain's amendment rests in two places: the outcome of the Senator's negotiations with the White House over some provisions, and then with a handful of House and Senate members who will negotiate a final bill.

We have heard that Senator McCain and the White House are going to announce an agreement today. The White House came under enormous pressure to accept an absolute ban on abuse – because of the message sent by the Senate, and now the House.

You should know that it is because of your support - and tireless campaigning - that both chambers of Congress sent the White House (and the world) a clear message: The American people do not tolerate torture or cruel and inhuman treatment.

Today the Washington Post put the story on its front page: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/12/14/AR2005121402045.html

Look out for an announcement about the McCain amendment later today - we are confident all your hard work is going to make sure torture never again happens in America's name, and we look forward to working with you on this issue and others in 2006.

Sincerely,

Jill Savitt

HERE'S WHAT STARTED ALL THE CONTROVERSY AMONG AMERICANS WHO JUST COULD NOT LOOK AWAY AFTER THESE HIDDEOUS ACTS OF BARBARISM WERE EXPOSED TO THE WORLD.  THIS VIDEO IS CALLED "A FEW BAD APPLES."

http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/video.html
A FEW BAD APPLES
They were the photos that shocked the world. Detainees in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison attacked by dogs, made to crawl on all fours while on the end of a leash, hooded with electrical wires attached to limbs. This humiliation, even torture, was carried out by their guards, members of the American military.

President Bush and his government wanted the public to believe that this was the work of just a few bad apples. But, an investigative team from the fifth estate, led by reporter Gillian Findlay, takes us inside one of these notorious images, talks to the American soldiers who were there, and finds a markedly different story.

PLEASE FEEL FREE TO POST ANYTHING ON THE SUBJECT OF TORTURE THAT YOU PLEASE ON THIS ALERT.  ALSO, PLEASE SEE IF YOUR REPRESENTATIVE VOTED FOR OR AGAINST THE AMENDMENT.  IT IS ONLY THE BEGINNING OF THE ACTIVISM.  WE MUST KEEP THE PRESSURE ON THEM.
