Thanks to the power of the Care2 community, President Barack Obama this week invited the Care2 community to be represented among a select group of about 75 citizens Thursday for a new "Online Town Hall" meeting at the White House. In fact, three Care2 members were actually in the East Room with President Obama, where he took questions not only from that select group but also from a pool of almost 100,000 questions submitted online -- many of these questions came from Care2 members, too.

To read first-hand accounts of the event by the three Care2 members who were there, check out this post from Care2's Politics cause
channel.
Sally and Michelle
The lucky Care2 members at the White House were Sally M  and Michelle W (both from the Washington, DC area), as well as our own team member Heather Holdridge, Care2's director of political advocacy.

A presidential staffer told us when extending the invitation that they specifically wanted Care2 members to be among the Town Hall participants to represent the causes of protecting the Environment, addressing global climate change and increasing renewable energy. This put Care2 in the venerable company of only a few other progressive organizations, such as the Sierra Club and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Our member Sally M even blogged about the thrill of getting to know Sierra Club President Allison Chin, as both of them attended the event.

By the way, Care2 has worked with both Sierra Club and NRDC for many years to advance environmental causes. We were humbled and honored to be in such company on Thursday!

Once again, this shows the impact that Care2's community of do-gooders is having on the world. It also demonstrates the reputation and leadership role that Care2 members have achieved, thanks to your passionate commitment to taking action every day for the great causes of our time.

With an overwhelming percentage of Care2 members voting for Barack Obama, Care2 is a happy place today.  The election was both an embrace of a kinder, gentler, more inclusive and hopeful path, as well as a powerful rejection of the policies and practices of the past 8 years.  Listening to Obama’s victory speech last night, one couldn’t help but feel this was a true American Dream moment – whether you supported his candidacy or not, the fact that we elected a black man with a Muslim-sounding name is a beautiful reminder that anything is possible in America.

Congratulations to the many thousands of Care2 members who put their hearts and souls into the election to get out the vote – what a fantastic impact you’ve had.

It’s hard to believe that my kids, who are 4 and 5 years old, don’t think it’s odd that their friend has two Mommies and their first memories of a president will likely forever be of an African American.  We’ve come a long way.

Yet, yesterday’s election also highlighted how far we have to go.   Proposition 8 in California, the law that constitutionalizes discrimination by banning same sex marriage, appears to have won a narrow victory.  And of course, the election was only a decision on who will lead our nation – the real challenge now is to find our way toward the brighter future… and with two wars and the worst economic headwinds in generations, it’s going to be a challenge to make progress on the policies that will shape our future.

For the roughly 12% of Care2 members who voted for McCain, I’m so glad you’re here.  It’s important to have a diversity of views, and wanting to make the world a more caring, sustainable place isn’t a partisan perspective.  The truth is, we need to work together to bridge the gap, and as Care2 members, you’ll play a key role in making that happen.

For the whole of Care2, I’m optimistic that this election is the dawn of a new era for all of us in this global community.  I started Care2 with a vision for uniting people around a common vision for taking action to make the world a better place.  Yet, we’ve spent too much of the past 8 years fighting frustratingly partisan battles against short-sighted, fear-based policies and actions.   Of course, the irony is it’s easier for most folks to fight a wrong, than find common ground to solve problems.   So now we have both the opportunity, and the challenge, of working toward creative solutions with what will likely be a much more agreeable government not to mention more mainstream support.

This is where it gets fun.  Now is our opportunity to get things done. To work together. To put the past behind us.  To turn years of frustration and outrage into optimism and enthusiasm.  Now is our time to create that better world we know is possible.
