"In 1997, Samsø won a government competition to become a model renewable energy community. At the time Samsø was entirely dependent on oil and coal, both of which it imported from the mainland.[1]
An offshore wind farm comprising 10 turbines (making a total of 21 altogether including land-based windmills), was completed, funded by the islanders.[4] The people of Samsø heat their homes with straw burned in a central heating system and they power some vehicles on biofuel which they also grow. Now 100% of its electricity comes from wind power and 75% of its heat comes from solar power and biomass energy.[5] An Energy Academy has opened in Ballen, with a visitor education center.[6]"

My comment;
The answers are all around us. It is mostly about will.. We can do anything we set our minds to, as the Samso Islanders did in 1997. It is even easier to do what they did now.
 If we continue to go down the dirty rat hole of coal, nuclear and oil, we get the same thing that The Penguin got from Batman... in the movie. It is not pretty or nice, as we see from the Gulf Ecological and Humanitarian Disaster that is coming in slow motion... like a car going off a cliff, but slowly, inevitably.

The Danish haven of Samso is one of the world's first industrialised places to become energy self-sufficient - a great boost for a country about to host a summit on climate change. Tony Paterson visits the windy isle.

"Construction of a solar energy system that will supply power to the Red Bluff Union High School District is set to begin.

Solar Development, Inc. will build and maintain the system. The district will purchase power points from the company, which will enable the district to operate off the grid, said maintenance director Joe Kittle."

This is an exciting new development.. Why? It shows how even a very high power using facility, such as this school, can get 100% off the grid, using no money, and costing taxpayers O.
How is it done? The school signed a contract to buy power from Solar Development for the next twenty years, at a rate lower than PGE charges now. In return, the solar company funds the construction, installation and maintenance of the system. The power generated should be enough to zero out the power bill of the school...
Think of the possibilities..... anyone with enough property who is willing to sign a 20 year contract should be able to do the same thing. Throw in an electric car and it may be possible to zero out all carbon emissions from a business, home and car.
This is HUGE....

Please note Care2 News story at;

Waters around the North Pole are absorbing carbon dioxide at such a rate that they will soon start dissolving the shells of living sea creatures. Carbon dioxide gas is ACID, and it affects our health as well, and not in a positive way... Breathing in acid is not a healthy thing to do.
