How To Take Advantage Of Health Care Reform
Much of the new health-care reform bill will take effect in stages between now and 2015, but many Americans still don't understand what the changes are, according to a summer poll by Harris Interactive. Here are a few things you can take advantage of now to improve your health, at no cost to you.

Consumers Union

Help us keep the calls coming!Thousands of you gave $5 last week to fund our toll-free hotline. If you didn’t yet give, you can donate $5 now so we can keep the calls coming from Americans fed-up with special Wall Street deals!

The stock market is stronger and some companies say they may start hiring again. We all want to be hopeful, but we’re still waiting for the other shoe to drop.

That’s because the problems with our financial system -- risky mortgages packaged into riskier investments and big bonuses for big gambling -- have not been fixed since Wall Street crashed our economy 18 months ago!

This week the Senate is finally addressing Wall Street reform. They’ve heard for months from slick lobbyists about why the rules shouldn’t change, how they should keep hiding their secret deals, and why they deserve special loopholes. We need you to call your Senators right now and say you’re sick of waiting for the other shoe to drop! Tell your Senators to pass tough rules so we won’t have to endure another economic meltdown!

Call your Senators toll-free – 1 (800) 944-6762 – to vote YES for Wall Street reform that stops the gambling and protects you as a consumer.

Thousands of you last week gave $5 or more to fund this toll-free phone line so real people could get their voices heard in Washington. Now let’s flood the Senate offices with voices of Americans fed-up with the special deals for Wall Street! It’s time we return common-sense to our economy and financial system.

Click on the links for more talking points, or just tell your Senators’ staff you want them to pass a strong Wall Street reform bill that will:

  • Protect consumers from schemes and tricks. An independent watchdog must be created so when financial red flags are spotted they can act quickly to prevent them, rather than deal with the bureaucratic maze regulators do now.
  • End taxpayer bailouts. If a financial institution causes their own mess, they should clean it up. Banks and financial companies should pay into a fund to cover any rescue, not taxpayers. No one should be ‘too big to fail.’
  • Stop the hidden gambling. Eliminate the loopholes that let Wall Street and banks hide the massive, risky side-bets that tanked our economy.
  • Let states protect us. States should have the right to do more than what the Fed says to protect residents from emerging financial schemes.
  • Bring unfair credit card rate hikes back down. Millions of Americans were hit with rate hikes last year before the new credit card law went into effect. A solution should be added to the reform bill that gives consumers a legitimate process to review and rollback unfair rate hikes.

Call 1 (800) 944-6762 now to be directly connected. Tell your Senators to vote YES for reforms that help our economy.

After you call, please forward this to others you know who want our economy to move forward – not back again – so they can lend their voice, too.

Sincerely,
Gail Hillebrand

Wake Up Call for House Leadership

LetterNearly 60 of the biggest Democratic Party givers sent a letter in support of the Fair Elections Now Act to Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) this week. These individuals, who have provided immense financial support to congressional candidates, are calling on House leadership to support Fair Elections campaign reform in the wake of the Supreme Court ruling in Citizens United v. FEC.

The New York Times reported on the letter noting that the signers are among the wealthy elite few. “[A]dvocates of stricter campaign financing laws have enlisted a roster of about 60 of the biggest donors to the House Democratic campaign committee — donors like Jonathan Soros, son of the billionaire financier George Soros, Douglas Durst, the New York real estate magnate; and Herb Sandler, the banker-turned-philanthropist.”

Big donors are constantly on the receiving end of fundraising calls and know that those vying for political office must constantly raise money. The Citizens United decision will only increase the number of solicitations and even these wealthy donors want elections to be about issues and ideas and not who has the biggest bank account.

The letter-signers made a fervent plea to Speaker Pelosi to support the Fair Elections Now Act. “The threat of outside intervention in elections, on a scale not seen before, will add to the already intolerable pressure on members of Congress to raise campaign funds, a consuming distraction for those who are tasked with leading our nation during difficult times such as these…We urge that you embrace the Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826) as a leading measure to ensure, in the words of our President, that American elections are not ‘bankrolled by America’s most powerful interests.’”

New Polling Show Voters Want Reform

HandsSeventy-four percent. According to anew poll, that’s the percentage of Americans who believe special interests have too much influence in Washington, D.C. The national survey, conducted by the bipartisan pair of Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research (D) and McKinnon Media (R), found that voters are disillusioned with Congress and the way elections are funded.

The poll also shows that 79 percent of respondents believe that members of Congress are controlled by the people who finance their campaigns. This number isn’t just about perception – the debates in Congress reflect this. Big money special interests and industry lobbyists have successfully killed or watered down legislation on the health care overhaul, financial regulatory reform, and energy policy.

“Voters are tired of special interests’ stranglehold over the policy making process in Washington, D.C.,” said David Donnelly, national campaigns director for Public Campaign Action Fund. “The Supreme Court’s [Citizens United] decision has made the situation worse and they expect Congress to act.”

Voters are ready to see broad and bold legislation to reform the way we pay for elections. Sixty-two percent of respondents support campaign reform like the Fair Elections Now Act. The Fair Elections Now Act (H.R. 1826, S. 752) empowers small donors and takes the focus off of Wall Street and puts it on Main Street. It’s time that Congress listens to the voters.

New Proposal Not Enough

Gavel and MoneyLast week Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) unveiled a legislative response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Citizens United vs. FEC. Their proposal is designed to increase transparency by instituting new disclosure requirements and limits on spending by foreign-controlled companies, recipients of bailout money, and federal contractors.

The lawmakers warned that without prompt legislative action, elections would see an explosion of corporate political ads. "We need to move very quickly to blunt the corrosive impact of this decision on democracy," noted Rep. Van Hollen.

While this legislation is certainly a good start at remedying the potential effects of the Citizens United ruling, it does not address Congress’ reliance on big money donors and special interest money. Common Cause and Public Campaign put out a press releasefollowing the introduction of the proposal, which states that any response must go further to include the Fair Elections Now Act (S. 752, H.R. 1826).

“These are good first steps but as a package they fall short of getting to the heart of the problem of money in politics,” said Nick Nyhart, president and CEO of Public Campaign. “At the end of the day, these proposals still leave members of Congress dependent on money from Wall Street interests, insurance companies, and the other deep pocket interests who control Washington, D.C. Congress needs to move quickly to enact the Fair Elections Now Act that gives voters control, and do so without delay.”

The White House, Washington

Dear Friend,

Anyone that's watched the news in the past few days knows that health insurance reform is a hot topic — and that rumors and scare tactics have only increased as more people engage with the issue. Given a lot of the outrageous claims floating around, it’s time to make sure everyone knows the facts about the security and stability you get with health insurance reform.

That’s why we’ve launched a new online resource —WhiteHouse.gov/RealityCheck — to help you separate fact from fiction and share the truth about health insurance reform. Here's a few of the reality check videos you can find on the site:
There's more information and a number of online tools you can use to spread the truth among your family, friends and other social networks. Take a look:

Health Insurance Reform Reality Check

We knew going into this effort that accomplishing comprehensive health insurance reform wasn't going to be easy. Achieving real change never is. The entrenched interests that benefit from the status quo always use their influence in Washington to try and keep things just as they are.

But don't be misled. We know the status quo is unsustainable. If we do nothing, millions more Americans will be denied insurance because of pre-existing conditions, or see their coverage suddenly dropped if they become seriously ill. Out-of-pocket expenses will continue to soar, and more and more families and businesses will be forced to deal with health insurance costs they can’t afford.

That's the reality.

Americans deserve better. You deserve a health care system that works as well for you as it does for the status quo; one you can depend on — that won't deny you coverage when you need it most or charge you crippling out-of-pocket co-pays. Health insurance reform means guaranteeing the health care security and stability you deserve.

President Barack Obama promised he'd bring change to Washington and fix our broken, unsustainable health insurance system. You can help deliver that change.Visit WhiteHouse.gov/RealityCheck, get the facts and spread the truth. The stakes are just too high to do nothing.

Thank you,
David

Dear Eric,

Do you have fresh lettuce in your fridge?

Last Wednesday, a company recalled romaine lettuce in 29 states due to salmonella. Much of that lettuce was already in people's homes. Did you know about the recall effort so you could check on your greens? Probably not.

It's time we stop relying on unreliable recalls and start to prevent food poisoning up front. The Food Safety Enhancement Act will do that, but we need your Representative to vote FOR it this week, before Congress goes on its recess!

The House could vote THIS AFTERNOON or tomorrow. Act now!

Look at your cell phone
Now look at your phone bill. Ugh! Why can’t you take your phone to another company to get a better deal? Tell Congress to stop the giant telecom companies from holding your phone hostage.

Parties for health reform
Congress is headed home in August, and members need to hear about fixing health care, not just ignoring it. We’re looking for activists to hold house parties (we have tips and help here) where your guests write letters about getting real solutions to their problems.

Has your credit card deal changed?
We’re hearing banks are changing credit card deals before the new reform law takes effect. If your card terms are being messed with tell us about it here so we can know about any new tricks to fight against.
