In 1991, Britain passed the "Dangerous Dog" act in response to aggressive incidents involving uncontrolled dogs. The Act, which affects England, Wales and Scotland, bans ownership of certain breeds considered to be dangerous, most notably the Pit Bull Terrier, without specific exemption from a court.
Because of the act, dogs are being put to death for their appearance rather than any actual displays of aggression. Recently, a bulldog/Labrador mix named Lennox was killed after a dog warden said he was a Pit Bull. Hundreds of thousands of Dog lovers worldwide showed support for Lennox, and TV dog trainer Victoria Stilwell offered to fly Lennox to the U.S. at her expense, but the courts decided to put him down anyway. Neither bulldogs nor Labradors are on the dangerous breeds list.
Recording artist Chris Brown recently started selling newborn pit bull puppies through an online business called CB Breeds. The business charges $1,000 per puppy, which can be paid through PayPal, and there is no apparent screening process for prospective owners.
Brown appears to be a dog lover, and the puppies he is selling are fully vaccinated and examined by veterinarians. Unfortunately, further breeding contributes to the breed's overpopulation. Pit bulls are common in shelters because they are often mass-bred for fighting. Instead of promoting new pups and encouraging more breeding, Brown should use his influence to promote animal shelters and save abandoned pit bulls.
While several nations have banned the use of animals in circuses, U.S. acts such as the Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus and Shrine Circus continue to force elephants to perform in their shows. Performing is not natural for elephants, so trainers use cruel devices called bullhooks to control them.
The bullhook is a tool with sharp metal prongs that trainers sink into an elephant's sensitive areas, such as behind the ear. The cruel tool inflicts great pain to an elephant. Circuses claim that bullhooks are necessary to handle elephants safely, but if they can't handle elephants safely without inflicting pain, they shouldn't use the animals in their acts.
In the beginning of
