This day in history: 9 April

AUSTRALIAN HISTORY
1770 - It is generally believed that CPT JAMES COOK discovered BOTANY BAY on this day...although this does not tally with Cook's own ship logs, which stated that land was first sighted on April 19. The date of Captain Cook's actual landing at Botany Bay is recorded as having occurred on 29 April 1770, whilst the plaque on the Captain Cook monument at Botany Bay National Park has 28 April 1770. Whatever the discrepancies, April 1770 remains significant in Australian history

WORLD HISTORY
1895 - Astronomer JAMES KEELER did a spectrogram of Saturn's rings. Using light reflected from the rings he showed that particles in the inner part of a ring moved at a different rotational speed from those in more distance parts of a ring. By this he proved that they could not be solid objects because they did not rotate at a uniform rate.
