Deal Struck to Vote on Stem Cell Funding Vote in October - Bush Threatens Veto

HERE'S ANOTHER SHARE TO ADD TO THE STEM CELL ISSUE.  NOW THAT A VOTE CAN BE BROUGHT TO THE FLOOR OF THE SENATE IN OCTOBER, WITH FRIST MAKING A "DEAL" WITH COBURN FROM OKLAHOMA, WHO WILL SURELY TRY TO PANDER TO THE RELIGIOUS RIGHT ON THIS VOTE, GOOD OLD DUBYA HAS THREATENED TO VETO THE BILL, JUST LIKE HE THREATENED TO VETO THE McCAIN ANTI-TORTURE BILL.  OF COURSE, A VETO CAN BE OVERRIDDEN BY A TWO-THIRDS MAJORITY IN THE SENATE, BUT WE NEED TO GET TO WORK NOW, KEEPING THE PRESSURE ON AND KEEPING THIS IMPORTANT VOTE IN THE FOREFRONT.  REALIZING THAT THE VOTE WILL BE HELD RIGHT BEFORE THE UPCOMING MID-TERM ELECTIONS, PLEASE CALL YOUR SENATORS, WRITE YOUR SENATORS, AND FIND OUT THEIR STANDING ON THIS MOST IMPORTANT FUNDING MATTER.  COBURN ALSO VOTED AGAINST THE McCAIN BILL, AND IT WOULDN'T SURPRISE ME IF SOMEONE DOESN'T TRY TO PUT A MONKEY-WRENCH IN THIS VOTE FOR THE PURPOSE OF CATERING TO THE "RELIGIOUS RIGHT'S VOTES"  STAY ALERT, PLEASE:

Congratulations! You have done something incredible.

Yesterday, we learned that Senator Frist was poised to bring embryonic stem cell legislation to the floor in a package deal, requiring all 100 Senators to approve the move. Unfortunately, we also learned that one senator -- religious right sweetheart Sen. Tom Coburn of Oklahoma -- was committed to rejecting the package, dashing our hopes for the vote we've been fighting so hard to achieve.

DefCon, along with an array of stem cell advocacy groups, leapt into action. In a matter of hours you sent nearly 18,000 emails, calling on your senators to demand that the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act -- which provides federal support for embryonic stem cell research -- be given a real chance.

Your amazing work put immediate pressure on Senators Frist and Coburn, who, at the eleventh hour, brokered a deal to allow this historic legislation to come to the floor.

Thank you for your hard work. Nearly 50,000 DefCon members have taken action over the past month calling on Frist to deliver on his word, and now victory is in sight.

Last night on the Senate floor Sen. Frist promised to bring the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act to a vote before the Senate adjourns in October. This is a real victory and you played a critical role in this unprecedented legislation. But, our work is not over yet.

We must ensure that Sen. Frist keeps his word to hold a vote on the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act. President Bush is next: despite a bi-partisan coalition that will likely pass in the Senate, the President has pledged to veto the bill should it arrive on his desk -- his first veto in six and a half years in the White House. We cannot and will not let that happen.

Our campaign is roaring forward. Please stay tuned for ways that you can take action and demand the President put our health and hope above the agenda of the religious right.

TELL OKLAHOMA SENATOR TO STOP DICTATING OUR HEALTH AND WELFARE TO US.  IT IS OUR CONSITUTIONAL RIGHT TO VOICE OUR OPINIONS AND RAISE OUR VOICES IN SUPPORT OF THIS RESEARCH.  THE SENATOR FROM OKLAHOMA HAD RATHER "PANDER" TO INTEREST GROUPS WHO WANT TO DICTATE OUR VERY LIFE DOWN TO OUR EVERY MOVEMENT, OUR HEATH, AND OUR WORKPLACE.

We have to have all 100  senators vote for funding stem cell research.  This does not make any sense at all to me.  Usually, there is a two-thirds vote, but the far radical right has an advocate from Oklahoma, the lone ranger who will dissent on this vote and stiffle this most important legislation.  I suggest an overhaul of these undemocratic ideas in the Senate and to change the parliamentary procedures to PREVENT  one "dictator" from Oklahoma stiffling and blocking  such an important and "bipartisan," I might add, piece of legislation to fund this most important research for the 21st century:

Today, without notice, Sen. Frist is planning to bring a package of stem cell bills to the Senate floor for a unanimous consent vote – such a vote requires approval from all 100 senators. Make sure your senators hear from you -- click here.

The package includes the Stem Cell Enhancement Act, which would rescind President Bush's unconscionable ban on federal support for embryonic stem cell research. The religious right has been working furiously to keep this bill from the floor or at least amend it to support Bush's ban.

Contact your senators right now and demand they Vote Yes! on the Stem Cell Enhancement Act, with NO Amendments.
