Two Napier, New Zealand preschools are doing their bit for World Environment Day! Marking this very important day,Napier's City Children's Centre has been approved for $100 funding to plant 50 native Grasses and 40 native Hebes under a large protected Pohutukawa tree in the centres front garden. Parents and children will join in the project.
Moteo Kohanga Reo has been approved for $930 for a substainable organic vegetable garden and worm farm in a plot of land offered to the preschool by Timi Kara Marae. Community businesses have ploughed and rotary hoed the plot and donated border screens and timber. Families have donated two bath tubs for the worm farm.

Turkey is the second largest honey producer in the world-it has more than four million beehives and produces over 70,000 tons of honey each year. It is also home to approximately 3,000 European brown bears which treat the unprotected beehives, each filled with up to 20 kilograms of honey, as their own personal fast food kiosk.
Honey is a favourite food source for bears due to its energy rich carbohydrate content-its the perfect meal to pile on the pounds. In recent years, the competition for honey has become a major area of conflict between bears and the Turkish farmers.
The bears were being seriously injured and even losing their lives-trapping and shooting were common and illegal methods of control-and farmers and local communities were losing their livelihoods. Many bear cubs were also orphaned when their mothers were killed in their search for honey.
Although the European brown bear is protected by law because of its threatened status, it is difficult for the authorities charged with protecting the bears to effectively patrol the remote, mountainous habitats where much of the honey is farmed.
WSPA is determined to support the government in protecting the rare bears and also to help farmers preserve their traditional livelihood.
