Some time ago I exchanged some messages with Arwa on Islam and vegetarianism, some of which ended on her website. Finally managed to put up my 2p response on the website, copied hereunder:

Re: "I see the problems of stating that Islam promotes vegetarianism as it simply does not" - I agree the Quran doesn't state 'thou shalt be an exclusive vegetarian'; however, there are at least 4 verses in the Quran which positively encourage the non-animal food blessings...:

6:99 - "(God) is the One Who sent water down from the sky. Therewith We brought forth plants of all kinds and from them the verdure and We brought forth from it the clustered grains, and from the palm-tree its spathes with bunches of dates (hanging) low, the gardens of grapes, olives and pomegranates similar and different. Look at their fruit, when they bear it, and their ripening. Verily, in that there are signs for people who believe."
16:10-11 - "(God) is the One Who sends water down from the sky. For you this is a drink and out of it (grow) shrubs in which you let (cattle) graze freely. Therewith for you He makes sown fields, olives, palm-trees, vineyards and all kinds of fruit grow." [the cattle here could be ploughing animals]
50:9-11 - "We caused to grow gardens, grains for harvest, tall palm-trees with their spathes, piled one above the other-sustenance for (Our) servants."
6:141 - "It is He Who produces gardens, with trellises and without, and dates, and tilth with produce of all kinds, and olives and pomegranates, similar (in kind) and different (in variety): eat of their fruit in their season, but render the dues that are proper on the day that the harvest is gathered. But waste not by excess: for Allah loveth not the wasters."

... and none that encourage meat ... just that certain animals are definitely haram/ forbidden and that if you want to eat those which are not haram, then kill it properly, e.g....:

6:142 - "Of the cattle are some for burden and some for meat: eat what Allah hath provided for you, and follow not the footsteps of Satan: for he is to you and avowed enemy." - Satan mentioned in same sentence as meat eating... so eating too much of it can be easily done, and things like factory farming (where vast majority of meat nowadays available in many countries now comes from!) should be a definite no-no!
22:36 - "The sacrificial camels we have made for you as among the symbols from Allah: in them is (much) good for you: then pronounce the name of Allah over them as they line up (for sacrifice): when they are down on their sides (after slaughter), eat thereof, and feed such as (beg not but) live in contentment, and such as beg with due humility: thus have We made animals subject to you, that you may be grateful. "

My main focus in this blog and life is the environment, Creation, and how my faith, Islam, teaches about living in harmony with the rest of Creation ("There is not a moving creature on earth, nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but are communities like you.", Quran 6:38; the Quran can seem quite anthropo/ human-centric as only humans have a free will and thus require guidance as to options).

Living sustainably in our environment, however, also requires having a sustainable economic system and not waging war, but focusing on peace and using your money in positive ways.

On the topic of economic system, some short answers on money were answered by representatives of several faiths in a recent article in The Times. The key points I liked: "There is a whole Islamic economic system, and Islam abhors both stinginess and wastefulness. The Arabic word for economics, iqtisad, actually means moderation. [...]. There is no problem with being wealthy. King David, one of our prophets, was extremely wealthy. We say that it is good to earn and use the money to serve God."

On the topic of peace, terrorists in the name of Islam, abuse our beautiful religion. A recent confirmation (again! if seldom acknowledged in the press) that terrorism is NOT Islamic concerns clarification of the abuse of a fatwa of Ibn Taymiyya (1263–1328 CE) by a group of eminent group of scholars under the name of Mardin Declaration: "Ibn Taymiyya’s fatwa concerning Mardin can under no circumstances be appropriated and used as evidence for leveling the charge of kufr (unbelief) against fellow Muslims, rebelling against rulers, deeming game their lives and property, terrorizing those who enjoy safety and security, acting treacherously towards those who live (in harmony) with fellow Muslims or with whom fellow Muslims live (in harmony) via the bond of citizenship and peace. On the contrary, the fatwa deems all of that unlawful"

With upcoming elections: make your vote count if you can!

In peace, Rianne

For many religious communities, caring for the environment is an essential expression of faith. The upcoming Parliament of the World's Religions (taking place in Melbourne, Australia, from 3-9 December '09) will draw forth the sacred nature of the environment from all religious and spiritual traditions. It will also showcase the partnership between communities and other guiding institutions in pursuing practical approaches for reversing climate change and its effects.

If you have the good fortune to attend: "At the Parliament, you’ll experience dozens of keynote speakers, seminars, debates, workshops, discussions and more on topics including local farming, reducing energy consumption, mitigating climate change, the growth of green architecture, and more." Check out the theme: Healing the Earth with Care and Concern

Blog Action Day is an annual event held every October 15 that unites the world’s bloggers in posting about the same issue on the same day with the aim of sparking discussion around an issue of global importance. Blog Action Day 2009 will be one of the largest-ever social change events on the web, and dedicated to Climate Change. First and last, the purpose of Blog Action Day is to create a discussion. By all focusing on the same topic/ issue on the same day, the blogging community effectively changes the conversation on the web and focuses audiences around the globe on that issue.

My 2p to the discussion, because stewardship and/ or reverence for Creation are central themes of all faiths (and we all share the one only earth available), is a call for all people of faith (and none!) to pray for a positive outcome for Creation at the Copenhagen and - because faith is more powerful when followed by action - to help achieve this by also signing the following two calls:

350- Interfaith call ("350 represents more than just a scientific benchmark for a safe climate – there are also deeply moral and spiritual reasons for getting the world back below 350 ppm CO2. Social justice, creation care, stewardship, earth community, beloved community - there are many ways we can name and express our moral and spiritual perspectives related to this issue.")

Interfaith Declaration on Climate Change ("Stewardship and reverence for creation are central tenets of all faiths on Earth. Yet today we are endangering life on Earth with dangerous levels of greenhouse gas emissions. These gases are destabilizing the global climate system, heating the Earth, acidifying the oceans, and putting both humanity and all living creatures at unacceptable risk.")

Also, do feel free to pay a visit to Birmingham-based Faith and Climate Change project for any inspiration for further action in your locality.
