Petition: Equal Pay for Equal Work!
Target: U.S. Senate
Sponsored by: AAUW (American Association of University Women)
...........
On average, women in the U.S. continue to earn only 77 cents for every dollar earned by men. Just one year out of college, women working full time already earn less than their male colleagues do, even when they work in the same job. Decades of earning lower wages result in significantly lower Social Security benefits, retirement incomes, and pensions, leaving women with less money to retire on.
.........
The Paycheck Fairness Act, a much-needed update to the 46-year-old Equal Pay Act, would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal enforcement efforts. Without the Paycheck Fairness Act, women will continue to be silenced in the workplace - prohibited from asking about their employer’s wage practices or talking about their own wages with coworkers without the fear of being fired, which prevents many women from discovering they’re being discriminated against in the first place!
..........
This recession makes pay equity even more important.
With women now making up half of the workforce and more and more families relying on a woman’s paycheck to make ends meet, ensuring that women are paid fairly is even more critical.
Urge your Senator to support the Paycheck Fairness Act today!
