After a huge public outcry, Republicans are back-pedaling from an outrageous attempt to redefine rape.1

But the attacks on women's health continue—including a bill that would allow hospitals to let a pregnant woman die rather than perform a life-saving abortion.2

It's absolutely horrifying. "This is really out there," said NARAL's Donna Crane. "Is it truly [the bill's sponsor] Rep. Pitts' position that a woman should die at the entrance of a hospital that refuses to provide abortion care necessary to save her life?"3

And there's more. Another bill would effectively prevent women from using their own money to purchase insurance that includes abortion coverage in the new insurance exchanges, among other things.4 Rep. Carolyn Maloney called this bill "the deepest attack on a woman's right to choose in my lifetime."5 Expert Jessica Arons said it would "accomplish the unstated end of making abortion as difficult to obtain as possible without actually criminalizing it."6

It's reprehensible. We can't let the GOP force women back into the back alley. Can you sign the petition below telling Congress to oppose these attacks on women's right to choose?

http://pol.moveon.org/smithbill/splash.html?rc=homepage_splash

The petition says: "Stop the GOP war on women's health. Letting a pregnant woman die on the hospital steps is reprehensible. This and all attempts to erode a woman's right to choose must stop."

Tomorrow, local MoveOn members in "We Won't Go Back to the Back Alley" T-shirts will deliver your petitions during a hearing on Capitol Hill. Anti-choice activists are sure to be out in full force at the hearing, so we need a huge stack of names to show Congress and the news media that voters won't stand for this attack.

These bills are a full-throated attack on women's reproductive freedoms. As noted above, one bill would allow hospitals to deny a woman a life-saving abortion—a major change from current law.7 Another bill would:8

  • Effectively ban abortion coverage in the new health insurance exchangeseven if people pay for coverage with their own money.
  • Impose tax penalties on small businesses that pay for health plans that cover abortion and people who pay for abortion care.
  • Force the District of Columbia to impose all of the above laws, instead of letting the city decide its own laws.
  • Permanently ban any federal spending on abortion care.
Will you sign the petition today and stand up for a woman's right to choose? Don't let the GOP send us back to the back alley. Sign the petition and share with your friends today:

Lawmakers in Many States Pushing for Abortion Curbs By ERIK ECKHOLM

Conservative lawmakers in dozens of states, energized by midterm electoral gains, are working aggressively to limit abortions.

This is what happens when people promote extreme right wing politicians 'ala Tea Party' to all levels of government.. There is a good possibility of not only cancelling all recently passed healthcare items, but also Roe vs Wade. We will soon be going back to the days of coat hangers in back alleys.. along with all of the suffering and deaths that happened back in those 'good ol days'.

Forget about green jobs, a clean environment, as there is no need for stimulus, and the environment is just fine, with no climate change, according to almost all Republicans and Evangelicals, as well as Tea Party folks.

The next step is creating a smaller government... The Republican and Tea Party plan is to keep military spending up, while cutting schools, roads, police, firefighters, libraries, street lights, and parks...Just do not touch Republican Representative healthcare benefits, salary raises or perks...all provided on taxpayer dimes.   We are watching the Republican plan in action, right now, in towns and counties as well as states all across this land.

Do you like 50% cuts in all of the above, or more? They are coming if they are not here yet.

Yup, it will be fun walking in the dark, on dirt trails, out in the woods... That is smaller government all right.. No need to send kids to school... there are none.
