September 11 2001 - I remember so well that day. I had just gotten home from school (I was in high school then) and sat down by the tv to have an afternoon snack, as every day after a long tiresome school day. And the first thing I saw then and there were those images so hard to grasp. The chaos. The burning towers. The panic. The cries. The planes. It was just so surreal. It took a while to realize what was happening, that it was actually for real. I remember that my whole family gathered there. All so stunned. So scared. It felt like the whole world was to come to an end on that day.

And in some way I guess it did. At least, the world changed a lot on that day, and it can never go back to before. For me as a European, I guess that it might be a bit difficult to understand exactly how a deep a wound September 11 caused on America as a nation. But on the other hand, it was a day, when not only Americans, but the whole democratic world, every person in this world who belives in democracy and freedom was attacked. And we of course all wintessed the terror, the death, the pain, and the suffering of innocent people, and we all cried and shared the suffering. But it also brought together all of us who believe in the rightful freedom of every individual, to open our eyes not to take our freedom for granted, and to raise our voices and to stand united against tyranny, violence and opression. To stand up for freedom. Every person in this world deserves to be free. Free to do whatever she wants, free to believe in whatever she wants, and free to speak her mind without fear. Free to live a life without fear of violence, war, persecution and opression. Every person in this world should have the right to live a life without poverty, and every person in this world should have the same right to education, food, water, health care and medicine. On September 11 thousands of people died and suffered for the freedom that every person in this world deserves, and today we honour them by celebrating peace, compassion and democracy.
