START A PETITION 25,136,189 members: the world's largest community for good
Mar 30, 2011

According to The New York Times, last year General Electric (GE) made over $14.2 billion in profit, but paid NO federal tax.1 None.

In fact, thanks to the millions GE spent lobbying Congress, we American taxpayers actually owed GE $3.2 billion in tax credits.2

Now GE is slashing health benefits and retirement benefits for new employees among non-union workers and is expected to push unions to accept similar cutbacks3, while its CEO, Jeff Immelt, gets a 100% pay raise.4

What's worse? Immelt now sits as chair of the President's Council on Jobs and Competitiveness (Jobs Council), representing corporate America to the President on matters like job creation and corporate taxation. That's a slap in the face to every hardworking, tax-paying American—especially GE employees.

That's why we're teaming up with Russ Feingold and his new group Progressives United today to call for Immelt to go. Will you join the call?

Sign the petition calling for GE CEO Jeff Immelt to step down as chair of the President's Jobs Council.

One of the chief ways GE avoids paying taxes is by shifting a large portion of its profits overseas, and jobs follow.5 Now GE's CEO is the person charged with helping the President create jobs here in America. That's just perverse.

And if the American people got back just the $3.2 billion GE took in tax credits, it would pay for the programs that House Republicans want to gut, like community health centers providing care to over three million low-income people6 and food and health care assistance to pregnant women, new moms, and children.7 We'd even have enough left to save the jobs of over 21,000 teachers across the country.8

The American deficit is being weighed down by hundreds of billions spent on bailing out major corporations. The tea party's plan is to make working families pay through devastating cuts, instead of making corporations with billions in profits pay their fair share.

But if we can hold Immelt accountable for GE's corporate irresponsibility, the nation will turn its attention to the injustice of corporate tax evasion in the face of the Republicans' budget-slashing attack on working families.

Make it all happen by signing the petition calling for Immelt to go. Just click below—and share this email with your friends, family, and social networks today.

Thanks for all that you do.

Madison, Wisconsin, is electric right now.
Tens of thousands of middle-class Americans—teachers, nurses, firefighters—are demonstrating at the capitol today. They're trying to stop the new, tea-party governor from ramming through one of the worst union-busting bills in recent history. He's using the pretext of a budget crisis, but it's one he created by giving tax breaks to business owners.1
Yesterday afternoon, 14 Democratic state senators walked out of the chamber in defiance to stop the vote on the bill. They're in Illinois now, speaking to the press from undisclosed locations to evade capture.2
Today protesters from all over Wisconsin are holding the biggest rally yet, with tens of thousands of people expected to come. But the national media is not giving the story the coverage it deserves, and without more attention, the Republicans may push the bill through.

We need to show that millions of Americans are standing with the protesters and help draw the nation's eyes to Madison today. Can you take a moment right now to change your Facebook status to this:

"Today I stand with the teachers, nurses, and all public employees of Wisconsin who are fighting for their rights. If you do too, change this to your status for the rest of the day."

Click here to go to your Facebook profile and change your status.

For Wisconsin's schools and kids, the stakes today couldn't be higher. Kim Hoffman, a middle school music teacher, spoke for hundreds of great teachers across the state when she said: "I love teaching, but [if these cuts go through] I'd have to start looking for another job, period."3

Gov. Walker's budget represents one of the boldest assaults on workers and the middle class in memory, and it comes at the worst possible time for Wisconsin's weakened middle class.

Today is the critical moment. With the bill temporarily stalled after Democratic Senators fled the state to deny the Republicans the ability to vote on the bill, there is a chance to kill the bill for good.4 Organizers expect their largest crowd yet, but they need to know that we have their back.

Can you help draw national attention to Wisconsin by changing your status on Facebook for the rest of the day?

Click here to go to your Facebook profile and change your status.

Thanks for all you do.

UCS Action AlertSetting the Precedent for Clean Energy

Dear Eric,

Carefully-sited offshore wind power can make a critical contribution to reducing global warming pollution and cleaning up our nation’s energy supply. As America’s first offshore wind farm, Cape Wind would generate the equivalent of 75 percent of Cape Cod’s energy and would set an important precedent for the future of clean energy development in this country. More than seven years’ worth of state and federal assessments have found that Cape Wind would have overwhelmingly positive environmental effects. Now it needs to clear one last hurdle, a favorable ruling by the Department of Interior. Please urge Interior Secretary Ken Salazar to let Cape Wind finally be installed.

Contact Secretary Ken Salazar today

Dear Secretary Salazar:

After its extended review by state and federal agencies, the Cape Wind permitting process should come to an end. Please issue a favorable Record of Decision on the outstanding "Section 106" process under the National Historic Preservation Act, and let Cape Wind be built.

The Cape Wind project has undergone more than seven years of exhaustive reviews by both the state and federal government, including a comprehensive two-year review by the federal Minerals Management Service, which examined 27 categories of potential effects of the proposal. The reviews found that the vast majority of the project’s environmental effects will be minor, negligible, or even positive, and there will likely be no significant lasting negative impacts. With this in mind, Cape Wind should proceed, especially as it will not only reduce global warming pollution but will set a precedent—showing the way we can begin developing our country’s offshore wind resources in a responsible manner.

Please issue a favorable record of decision and let the Cape Wind project proceed.

A bill that would put credit card reforms in place now rather than in three months was just blocked in the Senate. So it's time to take the fight straight to the banks!

Tell the credit card companies exactly what you think of them, and that they won’t get your business until they stop raising interest rates, adding new fees and penalties, and other tricks prior to the credit card rules going into effect in February.

What better way to tell the banks "bah, humbug!" than to stop charging on their cards during the holidays.

We can put the pressure on at the corporate level now if we all speak out together!
If we had a watchdog to prevent credit card tricks and other financial scams, we wouldn’t have to rely on Congress to fix problems after they happen. An independent regulator would put our money needs first, but the banks hate the idea!

Cell phone on your holiday list?
Verizon just hit most smartphone customers with a $350 fee for canceling their service early. Tactics like these are outrageous, and it’s time they're stopped so we can shop for the best wireless deals. A bill was just introduced; let’s move it now!

Dear Eric,

Do you have fresh lettuce in your fridge?

Last Wednesday, a company recalled romaine lettuce in 29 states due to salmonella. Much of that lettuce was already in people's homes. Did you know about the recall effort so you could check on your greens? Probably not.

It's time we stop relying on unreliable recalls and start to prevent food poisoning up front. The Food Safety Enhancement Act will do that, but we need your Representative to vote FOR it this week, before Congress goes on its recess!

The House could vote THIS AFTERNOON or tomorrow. Act now!

Look at your cell phone
Now look at your phone bill. Ugh! Why can’t you take your phone to another company to get a better deal? Tell Congress to stop the giant telecom companies from holding your phone hostage.

Parties for health reform
Congress is headed home in August, and members need to hear about fixing health care, not just ignoring it. We’re looking for activists to hold house parties (we have tips and help here) where your guests write letters about getting real solutions to their problems.

Has your credit card deal changed?
We’re hearing banks are changing credit card deals before the new reform law takes effect. If your card terms are being messed with tell us about it here so we can know about any new tricks to fight against.
