Solar energy

"Renewable energy sources are even larger than the traditional fossil fuels and in theory can easily supply the world's energy needs. 89 PW[57] of solar power falls on the planet's surface. While it is not possible to capture all, or even most, of this energy, capturing less than 0.02% would be enough to meet global current energy needs.

Wind power

The available wind energy estimates range from 300 TW to 870 TW.[57][59] Using the lower estimate, just 5% of the available wind energy would supply the current worldwide energy needs.

Wave and tidal power

At the end of 2005, 0.3 GW of electricity was produced by tidal power[3] Several TW of tidal energy can be produced without having a significant effect on celestial mechanics. The total power of waves that wash against our shores add up to 3 TW. [62]

Geothermal

An MIT report calculated the world's total geothermal resources to be over 13 YJ, of which over 200 ZJ would be extractable, with the potential to increase this to over 2 YJ with technology improvements - sufficient to provide all the world's energy needs for several millennia.[29] "

My comment; The above statistics show that the only thing we need is the WILL to switch to renewable power. Clean, green, 100% renewable energy is there for all of our needs, mulitiplied many times over.

We do not need obsolete fossil fuels, or any carbon based fuels at all. Just take ANY ONE of the renewable energy categories above to split any water into hydrogen and oxygen, which is easy to do.. Then burn the hydrogen when you need it, as a fuel for engines of any kind; home, car, power plant, etc. The emission from buring hydrogen is; WATER, pure and clean...

Why are we not doing this right now? Well the fossil fuel monopoly may have something to do with it, but mainly it is because people have not DEMANDED it yet.

Since the above categories do not include renewable and non polluting HYDROGEN, which I would also classify as a renewable resource, it gets pretty ridiculous that we are still drilling for oil or building toxic, polluting power plants based on carbon fuels.

Bottom line, all of the carbon based fossil fuels used by all of humankind from the Stone Age to now equals the amount of energy from the sun that hits our planet every thirty days.

There is over 72 TW of energy available worldwide, just from wind. Currently humans use about 7 TW from all sources globally... Just wind energy alone could provide enough power ten times over to provide for all of our needs...

Since clean, green renewable energy is only used for about 1% of what we use, and pollution causing fossil fuels/nuclear accounts for all of the rest in most countries, we have plenty of room for improvement.
